Is there a clear distinction beetween sludge and stoner or are they just vague labels made up by critics?
sludge is faster and has a hardcore punk influence
sludge is more punk while stoner is more doom/sabbath worship
good stoner reccs for someone who likes to fuck to sleep and electric wizard pls??

This.
Stoner is more oriented towards '60s/'70s heavy rock, with a clear psychedelic imprint but a modern, "agressive" sound. It can be more or less upfront. Think about Kyuss.
Sludge is more "evil" (doom influences), less accessible. It brings nihilism themes from its hardcore punk roots and when it goes psych it takes itself WAY more seriously. Think about Neurosis.
If you have trouble with getting the difference when you listen to a HURR stoner/sludge band, just ask yourself: can you associate this music with running on a motorbike?

Yeah this guy nailed it

Massive pleb. There's obviously clear differences between both genres. Just listen to eyehategod raw, dissonant and aggresive albums and compare them to the bluesy and almost psychedelic sound of sleep.

Thanks guys, i finally get it now.

I didn't say there was no difference, just that the terms seemed kind of vague depending on the band(Melvins in this case). Of course i never saw thought Sleep were stoner.

Sludge is not faster. Electric Wizard may be super slow, but Kylesa can be pretty fucking fast.
They both focus on big, distorted, noisy, sludgy guitars. The real difference is, stoner metal has a psychedelic element, and it's honestly usually more conventional with song structure. A lot of sludge borders on experimental noise or drone music. Because of this, sludge is almost inevitably more challenging and underground.

isn't Electric Wizard more of a stoner band though?

Yes, but they're still way slower than most any other band with the stoner title. Way slower than even Sleep. Also, I know the stoner rock/metal line blurs, but some stoner groups like Fu Manchu border on fast garage punk. The thing that makes them stoner isn't the pace, it's the psychedelia, the hard rock, the heaviness, and the sludgy guitars.
