So whats /mu/ consensus on vinyl? I don't get the appeal of it. Is the quality really better than CD's or mere mp.4s? I've never been a music buff and only have heard vinyl a coupme times way back. Pls no bully.
CDs are much cheaper more useful smaller and are portable. Vinyl is simply an expensive waste of time

data is even cheaper and smaller and more portable
all physical media is a waste of time
That said, record-collecting is fun and gives you a stronger consumerist high than any other format.

Vinyl is fun to collect and retains value over time for the most part
>Crosley
>"vinyl" over and over again
>mp.4s
>"is the quality really better?"
>random spelling errors
>pls no bully
Tone it down, my man.

So then vinyl is to music like leatherbounds to books? No discernable difference?

Actually there is a discernible difference, lol. Records are discernibly worse.
Still fun to collect, though.
Be prepared to spend $300-$500 just to get started, though. If someone had told me "you can get this or you can get a PS4" I might have reconsidered this hobby.
The key to good sounding vinyl is mastering and pressing quality
An excellent mastered vinyl will sound better than a poorly mastered MP3 or CD -- these days, the vinyl masters tend to have more care put into them than the digital releases
A terribly mastered vinyl will sound worse than a well mastered MP3 or CD
A terrible pressing will always be worse than its digital counterpart

A clean and well mastered vinyl record played back on a high end MC cartridge properly mounted on a Rega turntable through a McIntosh PreAmp and Amplifier will probably sound better than a CD.
If you don't have the money for that kind of setup it's a waste of time IMO

This is either underage or very strong bait
Some records sound better than others, there are a lot of factors that I'm not really privy to. I love records though, collecting them is cool. It's my preferred way to own music. Vinyl records are just really great products to own, feels like owning a piece of art. I'm not anti CD or mp3/flac/wav etc I just prefer records. I really enjoy being able to turn on my stereo and record player and watch the needle go into the grooves and physically produce awesome music out of my big ass speakers. It's a great experience that I never grow tired of.
