Listen, I don't know anything about these people or their music but that's the most common approach to anything.

You learn to speak by copying to others
You learn an instrument largely through covering other peoples songs.
You learn to write by writing out things others have written

I guarantee you this guy started as much of a carbon copy as anybody the difference is, he honed his skill BEFORE he released anything, look up early performances before his first album, you might be surprised or maybe he is copying an obscure artist you don't know.
