oh my goodness, that's like trying to introduce yourself to "classical" music. There's just too much of it for it to have one ideal starting point.
But yes, I'd start with the big names and the classic albums, then follow your favorite big names further (chronologically) into their respective careers to hear how they change and innovate over time. At least then you'll have a little bit of a baseline.
Not op, but curious. I mostly like one particular sound when it comes to music and deviations from it, something kinda like Radiohead, Björk or the likes. What would you say it is their equivalent in the jazz world?

Have you considered death?

Dunno, there haven't been enough possible bargains to make me think of it. How much will this product you're referring to as "death" cost?

I'm gonna kill myself honestly...never said that's the only thing I'm listening to. Yeah, I like Radiohead...and been thinking lately to get into jazz, and I need a starting point, preferably not a complete shot in the dark to put me off of it for good, which is why I went with the obvious something familiar. I'll later on explore also new stuff. Simple as that.

John Zorn - Naked City. There is no jazz that is like Bjork or Radiohead that I know of, but this album is as unique as those 2, probably more so.
