pre-Before Today Ariel Pink is hit-or-miss, some great songs among those albums but the albums themselves mostly play like novelty jingles

yep essentially it created the necessity for new sincerity which is arguably what lead to the rise of the alt-right and trumps election. criticism of capitalism in the form of participating in capitalism only ironically. it leaves you something to be against but nothing to be for. the overwhelming prevelance of irony in active creative youth culture -- ie hipster culture of the late 00s and early 10s resulted in people needing sincerity. needing to hear someone they felt was honest about how they felt who actually stood FOR something. this predicated trumps election imo.
