Can someone explain to me what "backpambient" is and why Gas would be considered such?
it's a term used by pseuds who think they are the only people who have ever listened to steve roach and brian eno and who want to make people feel bad about their music taste
gas is popular and well-regarded, so its an easy target for these contrarians

Yeah this is actual backpambient

it's nothing, ignore it
it's derived from the idea of 'backpacker hip-hop' which used to be a popular term of dismissal, used to describe hip-hop that was inauthentic, appealing mainly to people who aren't really hip-hop fans but want to maintain the appearance of being hip-hop fans. the translation into ambient music is clear enough. originally it was used to describe music that is kind of just minimal, pleasant and melodic but which doesn't necessarily follow the original ethos of ambient as background or wallpaper music. from there, it expanded to an unfocused term of derision for whatever you don't like, as described here >>72393978
please not the backpacker meme again

Exactly this. It's used by guys who overcompensate with their elitist arrogance because they secretly disdain the thought of large amounts of reading. This hipster game is a nice way to fake culture and bluff their way past it.
But this is just a phase for most. They grow out of it and stop caring. Which makes sense because "backpack ambient" really is something that only a young child could ever feel truly hostile over.

Very informative, thanks.
always through the "backpacker" prefix refers to the people who listen to the genre on trails and don't put enough attention to it or smth lol

downtempo not ambient

"Backpacker hip-hop" derives from graffiti artists keeping spray cans in their backpacks, with the original connection being to "alternative" hip-hop.
It became an insult to coincide with a backlash against said "alternative" hip-hop because, somewhat like you said, it was perceived as "hip-hop for people who don't like hip-hop".

>don't put enough attention to it or smth lol
its literally called ambient
anyway its pretty funny how ambient seems to be getting popular on /mu/ all of a sudden. th-thanks wolfgang

And I always thought backpacker hip-hop was just an insult towards high school kids who listen to "real rap".
Ambient is literally intended to be background music so attacking it that way is pretty bizarre.
anyone got a high res of Zauberberg's cover?
