Often times I find myself thinking about guitars themselves and how to modify them more than actually playing.

Wat do?
>>
>>72371374
i eventually reached an end point where a friend and i completely modded the fuck out of a squier i had to the point of retardation and its actually one of my main guitars now. after that i was finally able to focus on my playing lol
>>
>>72371443
I have heavily modified several guitars. Doing that to cheap shitty guitars is my pastime.
I've done so many and I just want to keep doing it. I'd like to do it and sell them after so that I can make some money back but I always grow fond of them and decide to keep them.

>>
>>72371904
PSLs are bad and you should feel bad

cafe au lait is the correct way to consume coffee
>>
>>72371374
I think all of us have this problem. It's so much easier to spend hours browsing guitar forums, watching youtube guitarists talk shop, checking out reviews of equipment, coveting guitars and amps we don't have, etc. than it is to actually practice.

I'm starting to think the ultimate "get good at guitar" rig would be an empty room (that doesn't get wifi) with one guitar, one little solid state amp, and a metronome. That's it.

Everything else is distraction and masturbation when it comes to improving.
>>
>>72371966
wearing ugg boots and enjoying PSLs but also being a well-rounded and intelligent girl who doesn't instagram her basic shit
>>
>>72371974
A lot of people will say that it's better to start with electric than acoustic because it's easier, but I tend to think the opposite--fewer gimmicks, fewer accessories, fewer things to distract you from getting the fundamentals down.
>>
>>72369299
Owning a guitar is the equivalent. Everyone I know owns a guitar but I only know one or two people that actually play it
>>
>>72372053
In my experience even very skilled guitar players are a dime a dozen
>>
>>72372101
In my experience the vast majority of players stop advancing after they learn the basics, a handful of songs they like, and one hard song.

Of course because playing guitar is so common, the small percentage of players who become very skilled are still a very large group.
>>
>>72372205
Sounds about right. Most people just don't know how to practice and don't stay consistent. I had a roommate once with a gorgeous black American Standard strat, maple neck. Covered in dust because he never practiced and could barely remember the chords to Creep; he was too busy playing video games all day to even set aside 15 minutes a day to keep up with music.
>>
>>72372240
After practicing, I think the most neglected skill is songwriting. Go into any guitar center and you'll see people shredding better than 90% of successful players in popular bands, but no one really cares about your skills unless you can actually create something with them.

>>72370898

Kai's lead playing is in E mixolydian here, sounds like he's playing with a bit of chorus and delay or reverb on it so it's got a pretty cool, spacey vibe.

I was the same way with breaking out of playing in minor shapes, and I started doing all my leads in major. Definitely use it as a jumping off point for learning all the modes. If you get stuck playing in major you'll start sounding like every Satrianicore band out there.

you're right, it is much easier to watch stuff and get "distracted" by it. the way i see it for me, there's so much information at hand that i don't know where to start. i've been on and off on guitar for 7 years and i'm regretting not having dedicated myself to it. it's the lack of guidance and the abundance of information and the lack of motivation to lock myself in my room and just practice.

Don't do that, there wouldn't be enough distance to break your neck. You won't be able to use the thinner strings anyways.

Tune it BEADGBEA, get more useable range. Get a chapman stick next time you wand bass strings on a guitar.

I've been trying to write metal songs in major keys to keep from getting to that point. It's actually not that hard to get it to sound less happy. A little bit of chromaticism goes a long way.

>>72374912
"Number of the Beast" is in a major key.

https://youtu.be/6J-MO5OhINI
>>
>>72375215
Doesn't sound quite as happy since it's not straight major. The intro goes back and forth between D major and C major, then it drops into D Mixolydian to keep up that flat seventh
>>
>>72375215
>>72375324
Was about to say this. The flat seven makes it not a true major. There's also not a lot of thirds being played.
>>
>>72368834
Seriously considering dropping electric and moving to acoustic. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but I could give less of a shit about making overdriven, aggressive music, I'm all about fingerpicking and melody these days. Anyone else having these feelings?
>>
>>72374508
on/off for bridge, middle(humbucker OR lipstick), and neck. Phase switch for neck. Volume for neck, only in the circuit when out of phase, for half out of phase tones. North coil/series/parallel/south coil rotary switch for the humbucker. Master volume, master tone, bass cut. And finally, the big Shazam, a master series/parallel switch. In either mode, the pickup switches still work the same way, unlike older tone monster mods which pretty much require a chart to know how to switch.
>>
>>72374912
Any examples of metal in Major that doesn't sound happy? Any time I try to write like that it ends up sounding like cheesy pop-punk but with a lot more notes
>>
>>72375410
None of the things you're saying apply to electric. You can make all the calm music you want with electric, distortion or no. It's a tool, you as a player use the tool you want. Don't let the tool define how you play.

If you don't live in a town of less than 2,000 full of rednecks who only listen to new age cuntry music while you just wanna rip leads and play sweet jazz chords like Govan then pls kys
>>
>>72375611
I don't have any examples off hand, but when I do it I try to keep a few things in mind. First, utilize half steps as much as you can. They always introduce more tension than whole notes. In a major key that would be between 3-4 and 7-1. One trick you can try is writing in Lydian, since a half step between 4-5 sounds much sadder than between 3-4, at least to me. Sixths are also nice intervals to use to introduce more tension. When voicing chords, try to use more inversions so your chords have more seconds and sixths. Extended chords also help. Next, think about your rhythm. If you use a strong chord on a weak beat it loses some of its luster, especially the V chord. If it's sounding like pop punk there's a good chance your rhythm and where the chords lie on it is too straight.

Really, it all comes down to tension and release. Even major chords are used in minor keys, so it really depends more on how you use them than how they sound individually.

Are you a guitarist? If so that's your problem right there, everyone plays guitar so you're not valuable. Learn bass or drums if you want to join a band, there are about ten guitar players for every bassist and drummer.
>>
I'm tired of playing guitar, I wanna pick up bass. Any bassfags have suggestions on cheaper basses and amps that would be good for starting out. Since I'm use to guitar I don't want total shit, but I also don't want to drop a ton of cash on trying something new out. I'm looking to play more jazz type styles.
>>
>>72375994
Most guitarists are shit though. If you actually practice people will want you.
>>
>>72375994
So true. Guitar is the second most popular instrument in the US (20 million players), surpassed only by piano (21 million).
>>
>>72375994
Bass fag. Can't get any guitar players to stop staring at themselves in the mirror and jacking off long enough to jam.
>rock is dead
Good. I use rock n roll as a tongue-in-cheek term to mean anything from punk rock to heavy metal
>>
>>72376187
Go to a guitar center and start riffing and you'll have people ask you to join their band.
>>
>>72376105
Interesting. I didn't know piano was so popular.
>>
>>72376105
Yep, and probably the most actively plaid instrument too. A lot of people "play the piano" but don't really play the piano.

Vito Bratta was based af, shame he basically retired from the music industry after White Lion disbanded.

He had chops on the level of the Shrapnel guys, but always kept his solos melodic as hell. He tended to write really catchy rhythm parts, too.
