Literally anyone can make a single good song, but only very talented people can make good albums.
Do you find this to be the case as well?

Maybe not everyone, but I'd say that it's true that there are very few artists, even terrible artists, that don't have at least one redeeming song.
Untalented + No Artistic Vision = Radiohead, Death Grips
Talented + No Artistic Vision = The Beach Boys, Talking Heads, Animal Collective
Untalented + Artistic Vision = Swans, MBV, Have A Nice Life, The Velvet Underground
Talented + Artistic Vision = Neutral Milk Hotel, Slint, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart

Absolutely. Hence why self-written/produced bands with multiple overall great albums are so rare, and why self-written/produced solo artists with multiple great albums are virtually unheard of.

it just sounds really dumb, like youre a 12 year old desperately grasping for credibility or something

which is why Elliott Smith is so special

Although - fyi - he started relying on additional producers with his 3rd album...

How the hell do Animal Collective and Death Grips lack artistic vision

It's already been decided. Note the OFFICIAL title, redditors

yes, but there isn't anyone who writes, performs, and produces completely all of their music. Smith was still very special

Who is: Grimes.
Which isn't to take away from the essence of your point. For a solo artist to maintain solitary artistic control over their records after their initial successful release is almost unheard of.

>Literally anyone can make a single good song
Depends on the person. I doubt most people could write a good song.
>but only very talented people can make good albums.
The modern quality standard for an album is a challenge that not many can tackle.

Although, now that I've started looking into him (didn't know anything about Elliot Smith until this thread) his first outright critical success didn't come until his 3rd album Either/Or, which also happens to be the first record for he started relying on additional producers (Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, to be exact.)
