more albums like this? I listened to Galaxy 500 but it just doesn't compare. I need something to revel and be depressed in. This is like the perfect album for my brain right now.
Pic related is right up your alley OP.
Try also Seam, Low, The American Analog Set and Red House Painters
All of Bedhead's albums. All of The New Year's albums too.

the first mbv album, the shitty one
Galaxie 500 are a totally different beast to be fair. Try Duster, a lot of their slower stuff hits that some vibe as Codeine.
Planning For Burial and Jesu both have heavy Codeine influence, if you're into crossover (doomy shoegaze and electronic (?) popgaze, respectively)
red house painters - down colorful hill
bedhead - beheaded
bluetile lounge - lowercase
duster - contemporary movement

Does anyone know some other suggestions that were more 90's based? I like the recording quality of stuff back then (and prefer it not to just be 'lofi')

Low's I Could Live in Hope is similar, but I don't think all the other slowcore bands recommended here sound anything like Codeine. Codeine had a much harder sound that relied heavily on dynamics and distortion, for this reason I think that Slint is a much more apt comparison than most of the other bands in the slowcore genre, which seem to have farm more in common with what Red House Painters created via American Music Club and Arab Strap

Everything listed here is it. Of course, there are some more obscure ones out there, but they're obscure for a reason. They're not that good.
If you really want another one then try Valium Aggelein.
I love that people are just figuring out the beauty and magic of the 90s aesthetic.

Thanks, seen this thread a few times and it always seemed to be the same suggestions but obscure for a reason makes sense.
