IDK man, burst finishes are pretty subjective. They do have some nice colors though. I wish they had a bit lighter blue for their powder blue. They have really nice yellows, though. Douglas guitars seem prettiest but they clearly have the wonkiest necks. I heard the hadrons are better, though. Seems like they're the new best bang for buck you can get.

A $200 guitar with a proper setup is the same as a $2000 guitar with a proper setup.

Find a cheap one in the color and shape you want and find some pickups you like and put them in it.

I know, right? Perhaps the best ever example of diminishing returns over £500 I've ever seen. that's not a horrible idea, if it actually suits you as far as configuration and finish goes. Still better to /diy/. I have a $120 jazz bass with $120 worth of pickups in it, and I love it. beautiful and light thanks to a basswood body and veneer top. Sure, I could gotten alder for like $20 more, but it's just so comfy. 12" radius, nice dark rosewood, two-way truss rod, jumbo frets, steel hardware. Exactly what I wanted.

It's a much better example of getting what you want then my disgusting tele abomination, but even that guitar started out as my ideal telecaster for like $150 total.

There's a few different methods to set up a guitar depending on if you want a nicely matched radius, or would rather do a set up by feel. You pretty much only want to set up by feel if you're going to be anal and spend hours setting up your guitar exactly the way you like it, or if you're setting up a bass for yourself it's a bit easier.

You can find a lot of guides just by googling guitar set up, if you want to adjust by feel the process is simple but time consuming.

Adjust the saddle height by playing upper frets while listening through headphones clean for fret buzz. Find a balance between how hard you can play without buzz and how low you want the action that you like. If you want you can capo at the 12th or so fret while doing this. Try to get all the strings to start buzzing out at the same volume or alternately the same picking force as a starting point.

Adjust truss rod to get desired action at lower frets.

Intonate.

File nut using feeler gauges. Put a capo on the first fret and use a feeler gauge to get the clearance between the string and the second fret. Use that measurement to lower the nut slot down. If it's your first time give yourself a margin of error, it won't be terribly noticeable anyway.

This isn't a one size fits all way to set up, but it's what I like to do rather than measuring action and radius to adjust saddle/bridge height. Most people like a very consistent radius, so if that's you don't use this method. It's also very sensitive to the strings you put on. The only reason I do this is because even when I measure, I end up fiddling with my action as I get accustomed to my setup anyway.

this, Dave is a cutie and you can pretty much just keep watching videos until your confidence is enough to proceed.
>>
>>72277246

how i set up my guitars:

1st thing I do is get a Nickel and adjust each string so it is a nickel away from the 12th fret tuned up. then i hold first fret down and 15th fret and eyeball the relief. you want a paper thin gap between your bottom string and the sixth fret... if it's wider tighten, if there is no gap loosen.

then i do the intonation.

a nickel is on the high side of action but still playable. every note should ring and you shouldn't fret out bending anywhere with action set like this. shouldn't buzz either.
>>
As long as you get quality hardware and do a proper setup, you can, actually, polish a turd.

Debate me.

>>
>>72279382
There's pros and cons depending on which g3 you get, g3x or g3nx.

G3X can do crazy shit with the expression pedal, g3nx can't. Also, there was a short lived g5 that had a 2 axis expression pedal which probably could do some seriously fucked up noise.

The N series has good amps and distortion, g3x does not.

But yeah even a multifx doesn't have infinite effects. So of course there's sounds out there you can't get.

If what you want to do is pretty standard pedal stuff, drive reverb modulation etc., g3n is gonna cover all your bases. If you want to do shoegayz then buy a synth or a more involved multifx like the g5 or boss gt-100, or if you want to do some crazy shit but don't want to spend days trying to achieve that, get the g3x and don't use the distortion.

c'mon dude it's not like anybody really differentiates between digital and analog modulation any more. I know my multifx has very pretty chorus and reverb, enough to justify the price alone. I get that not everyone is going to be on board with everything, but some stuff is just plain good. pitch shifters, for example. wah is the easiest thing to emulate ever, even early digital effects got that right. I would rather spend a hundred bucks on a multifx than on a multiband EQ any day.

>>72279621
>I convinced myself it was good because I wasted money on it
Do you by chance own a Gibson as well?
>>
>>72279761
I'm not talking in this case about the difference between multifx and dedicated pedals, just digital and analog. Most of the reverb you hear these days on professional tracks is digital. You really cannot tell the difference between digital and analog modulation. What you CAN tell the difference between, is an original versus an imitation. If you are asked to tell which of two delays is analog versus digital, and you haven't heard either before, no matter who you are, that's a coin toss. Same goes for chorus, phase, whatever.

Multifx can come with cheesy effects and they can come with good effects.

the difference from the G3x and G3Nx is just the distortion pedals and amps sound?

I'm the guy that was reshaping the neck of the red Les Paul a few threads back.

Usually how thick are flamed maple tops? And how do I find out if I only have a maple veneer?

I sanded this part of the pickup cavity to try to figure this shit out, I see this line that indicates that there are two different pieces of wood (green line), the top piece is about 8mm thick. Is that the flamed maple?

If so I'm gonna think about sanding that too and changing the color because this is transparent red paint instead of actual wood stain.
>>
>>72279991
no, with the older pedal you can control any parameter of any effect with the expression pedal. With the newer one you can only use it for standard things. I'm not sure if you can use an external pedal to control other parameters.

basically the N series does less, but sounds better.
>>
>>72280046

>>
>>72280087
on second thought, it's not flamed. can't really tell if that's a veneer over it or what. Try sanding the edge of the pickup cavity a bit.
>>
>>72279921
What's the difference between getting a $300 multi fx for 2 good sounds and getting 2 dedicated pedals that sound better for $100 a piece?
>>
>>72280109
well, any parameter at all. like any knob on any effect. gain on your amps, EQ, chorus depth, tremolo rate, etc. You can assign it to change the freq response of a lot of pedals like bit crush, the mix of things, reverb time, whatever. The G5 takes that a big step further by letting you control several parameters simultaneously. I haven't really seen people use that to any great effect, but when playing with the g3x I certainly wished I had that capability sometimes.

The modulation and stuff is just as good on the old and new ones, I've had both. In fact, the old ones even without the expression pedal have a few more parameters that can be very useful. The new one tries to keep most of the pedals limited to 4 knobs, while the old one barely ever had that few parameters. It does make the old one a bit more tedious.

Oh yeah, also the old one has a 24 bit audio interface and XLR out. The new one doesn't have that unless you get the big one, the g5n. You might check the website on that, I'm not sure about the medium model, the G3nx.

Once again I'm not really sure what difference using an external expression pedal makes. You should look that up.
>>
>>72280167
the shit that is just useful in a multifx. looper, powerful EQ, clean boost, volume pedal, tuner, whatever else. Plus, you know, hopefully more than 2 or 3 sounds out of however many hundred you have on there are actually good.

I have the EXACT same screwdriver as the one in that video, except mine's blue.

As for passing a signal through that thing, I don't see how you can. It's a sound-generating electro acoustic instrument (kinda), there's no input for any instrument or line signal there. You'd have to build something like a reverb spring driver circuit with a level mixer at the end to add in the dry signal from the guitar.

thanks I figured that might be the case, this is my first project outside of soldering pickups so I'm still really new at this. They released a version with a fuzz built in and it works like I would like but that's probably too complex of a build for me right now.

There's really not much to a reverb driver. Just don't build a high-voltage tube one til you know what you're doing.

>Plus, you know, hopefully more than 2 or 3 sounds out of however many hundred you have on there are actually good.
I dont get when people say this.

I have this old zoom >>72279465. Everything on it sounds old/cheap/lo-fi/digital to a small degree. But that saying "lots of effects and only a few sound usable" only applies to its distortions, and even then its more a matter of taste.

I cant see how modulations and crazy effects can sound bad on a digital MultiFX. Does it actually happen? In which multifx models youve experienced this?

Maybe youre talking about the stock patchs that come set-up exaggerated??

The new, cheap zoom G1on sounds good even its distortions (not only mods and fx)
https://youtu.be/A--6iQWiuwM

>>72280210
I can see why this happens.
Probably is the same thing that differss on Amplitube's stock amps where you can change lots of knobs and parameters like preamp model and poweramp model. Versus the collection models where you only have access to the real amp's knobs, and cant interchange the preamps and poweramps. These models have a more realistic sound and less parameters.

Probably the same thing happens about the G3 and G3n.
Having a "gain" and "volume" knobs on an amp like a vintage Marshall, on a MultiFX pedal, indicates that simulation probably will sound generic cause they didnt just model the actual amp as it is, you won't get realistic poweramp saturation etc.

Probably they did the same thing on the modulations, from the G3 to G3n. Modelled the actual modulation pedals instead of recreating the effect process digitally. So it only has few knobs, like the actual fx pedal. I find this unnecessary for modulation and effects because they sound good digitally, unlike the amps and distortion which are of very organic nature.

>>72280295
Its not like the pedal aint simple and has only 2 knobs.
I think ill keep it clean though and buy a newer multifx when i get the money.

Why are vintage Melody Makers so much cheaper than vintage Les Pauls or other vintage Gibsons? You can find a 1964 Melody Maker for like 2 grand.
>>
>>72283275
You should be fine without it and I wouldn't go out of my way to learn it. If you ever run into a time when you've got all 4 fingers down with one on the 6th string and you want to add a note to the chord (like a melody added on top of the progression), that's the time to do it. Can't really think of any other time this technique would really be desirable.

Great for rhythm stuff though as you can add more trills and flair to keep it interesting. It's just kind of niche.

I don't know about running your guitar signal through the piezo.

I see no reason you couldn't plug that into a parallel input like you see on practice amps or Plexis and other four-holers. Then the thing could bounce around on your cabinet and inject noise into your neo shoegaze set.

It also looks like he has his output jack leads flipped.
>>
>>72283410
What's wrong with telling the guy the most "correct" way to play? I mean at the end of the day it's all preference and he can do the thumb thing all he wants if that's his jam. He just doesn't NEED to do it for most things. You're not wrong really, but having to shift back and forth between the thumb behind and thumb over position is a waste of time and movement. He should only do it if he has to. So that's what I told him.

You seem more interested in how it looks to others than what's most efficient to play...
>>
>>72283544
thumb behind the neck is only more comfortable if youre just fretting notes like classical and metal shred, but yes he should just do what feels better to him and yes i care about how it looks

no, you just lose definition compared to pickups with two different frequency responses. With two matched pickups the peak frequencies are gonna be right next to each other, which gives you a smoothed out peak when they're played together. Obviously the middle position is always going to suffer from this, but with two different styled pickups you fill out most of your sound without completely losing the peakyness that aides in clarity.

How do I get good at strumming? I can play pretty much any chord but it usually sounds like shit because I almost always end up playing the basic 1-2-3-4 duh-duh-duh-dadada-duh-duh kind of thing.

I have a question:
I play with Orange Micro Dark (pic related), a Metal Zone MT-2, a Laney 2x12 Cabinet and I record the cabinet with a SKP Pro57 Mic.

What Mic do you recommend me with his price is less than 200 USD?
>>
I forgot that this microphone is useful, but the sound quality it has just is decent.

did the american companies get too jewish?

which lead to japan making high quality items cheaply?

gibson was going through an identity crisis at the time and fender was owned by CBS. not a lot of good shit was coming out in the USA at the time so generally anything japanese in the 70s/80s are better than their American counterparts. i own an 80s squier and its one of my favorite guitars

You must active the Digital OUT. Also, take another screenshot with in/out connections of your DAW, probably there is the problem.

Most of the problems With IN/OUT is an incorrect selection of the Inputs or the Outputs of your audio Software.

Shure sm57 is pretty much the go-to mic for guitar cabs. Only a hundred bucks. The mic you have is definitely an sm57 knock-off, not sure how big the quality disparity is between that and a real one though. It might only sound crappy because of bad mic placement or amp settings or something
>>
A little bit off topic, but my Focusrite 8i6 USB port just broke

Get a vintage Music Man amp. SS preamp, tube power section. I like them more then actual twins.
They can still be had for a great price if you look.
Vintage Traynor is good too.
Other good finds are vintage Acoustic Control amps and those old Peaveys with the tube power sections are really under rated.
Also Sunn Beta Lead

Atm 63. This is very similar in sound to the sm57/58. A bit hotter gain, but not bad and can be found for less than $50.
>>
>>72289743
You can get a real 57 for less than $50 at a pawn shop, they're pretty much unbreakable. They're nice, but mic placement is unforgiving. It'll sound like ass if you don't have it in just the right spot. And it seems to favor frequencies that aren't to pleasing. Fine in a good mix, a lottle weird stand alone.

The 421 is nice as well, pretty much the same range but with different frequencies are accenuated. It has an adjustable frquency curve as well. You'll need to buy this one used, I got a lightly used one for just under 2 bills. Sounds good, versatile.

The 609/906 are nice as well. The range seems a little larger than than the 57, a little more clarity. I sold my 609 but it was decent enough. The 906 I believe has an adjustable curve(rarely use it, and never mess with it when I do). Works great for cabs, but that's all I really like it for. Have to buy on sale to get under $200, saw one used for $130 once.

If you have a good sounding room and a way to provide phantom power you can get a decent enough condenser mic to use as a room mic, depending on placement you can use it to add ambiance, boom, or even a little sparkle(will spend a lot of time moving it around). You'll also need to phase correct it most of the time(usually just by sliding the room track a couple ms earlier) If you play at low volumes and/or the mic has a pad built in you can probably use it to mic a cab.

Heard people like the i5, but I never used or seen one. Can't comment on price.

>>
>>72290189
No. I'm aware they exist. The guy I'm responding to owns one. What's your point?
>>
>>72290203
Point is if you buy a Shure mic from a pawn shop then you really don't know what you're getting. You can't test it out, it's not from a Shure dealer, could be anything at all.
>>
Why does nearly every band I listen to have to play in a different tuning?
>E standard
>Eb standard
>FACGCE
>Drop D
>C standard
>Drop B, Drop A sharp, Drop A, Drop G sharp...
>B1 Gb2 Db3 Gb3 Ab3 Db4 (?????)
>7 String Eb Standard
>8 String Eb Standard but they never use the top Eb so in theory I could do this on a 7 string with thick enough strings.

For the higher 6 string tunings I tune on my 6 string. For the lower ones, I tune the bottom 6 strings on my 7 string. The ones that are either standard or dropped aren't SUCH a big deal, as I can pitch shift the music / tab.

But what the fuck is this:
>B1 Gb2 Db3 Gb3 Ab3 Db4
That was never gonna work on a 6 string with relatively normal gauges, and there was no way I was getting my B string up to a Db without it breaking on my 7 string, so I ended up tuning it like
>B1 Gb2 Db3 Db3 Gb3 Ab3 Db4
with one string repeated.

FACGCE is also different enough to be annoying.

What the fuck man, how do you guys deal with this shit?
>>
>>72290311
I deal with non-standard tunings by not using them. I went through a phase of experimenting with weird tunings, got sick of my strings going dead and snapping, gave up on alt tunings altogether.
>>
>>72290233
Thay goes for anything. I'm sure there's dozen of articles on how to spot a clone. The dead giveaway would be differences between the mics other than signs of use. Most shops I look at have 5+, compare them.

>The 421 is nice as well, pretty much the same range but with different frequencies are accenuated. It has an adjustable frquency curve as well.
So, the people adjust manually the EQ curve for get better results? I only take the original records without modding the EQ Curve, I'll try experimenting with the EQ. Also, as well check the "421", Is it a Shure Mic?

>If you have a good sounding room and a way to provide phantom power you can get a decent enough condenser mic to use as a room mic
The Scarlett 2i2 has Phantom power, but mi Room only has the generic Isolation's Houses, thst's bad for me.

You can learn the songs using the ears and adapt the sound to your favorite Tuning. I Do this, because I tune my guitar only in Drop C and this method works for me.

I don't use Amplitube, but in Guitar Rig 5 first you must select the driver to use (ex: ASIO, Direct Sound, etc), later the Device to Use (ex: Realtek, Guitar Link, Focusrite, etc).

Later of configured this, you must configure the routing, that is select the inputs and the outputs to use. This is very important, because although configures the driver correctly, your program never will works fine without assign the input and the outputs that want to use.

>>72290845
This is possible in 2 ways:
- Adapting the chords to an alternative way to sound similar to original (in my case, I get the Tonic, 3rd grade and 5th grade and search this notes in the neck).
- Using a Cap.
>>
>>72290906
stuff aer selected properly theres just no input sound

Take this for example.

Trying to play this on a 7 string in standard (BEADGBE) and ignoring the open strings results in these 3 chords:
--------
--------
--------4
7--6--6
--------
--------
3--3--3

It involves muting the strings in between which is fairly tricky to do consistently while strumming everything to get the effect of the original, and is missing notes.

Adding in some of the missing notes results in:
--------
--------
--------4
7--6--6
4--4--4
2--2--2
3--3--3

which is mad, you'd have to barre a few strings with your third finger on the 4th fret, while bending your pinkie enough to fret the 6th fret.
>>
>>72291221
Shit this's an hard case, try to boy a Cap and put this in the fret according to tuning equivalence.
>>
>>72291214
maybe if it has a different brand chipset like a nvidia
