Was half-hoping this could also help people find shit from the big dead period for shoegaze between the late 90s and early/mid-00s since there's not too many super-critically acclaimed releases from there, mostly since things like slowcore and alt-rock were really gaining traction in the indie world and thus the trends would be reflected as such
Was definitely neat mapping out the different shifting trends in subgenres as years go on
I've still got a bunch of these to listen to
>>
While fishmans are definitely dream pop I don't know if I'd consider them /shugazi/ canon
Only mentioning because Meme Season's leading Swirlies and I can't have that
Also damn you guys hate Ride

You should add a list of album names to the right when this is done.

This isn't necessary and it's ruining this board.

Sunbather, for me was just so refreshing and new. I recognise Candy Claws was really good but it came at a time where I felt the genre was really stagnating, and a lot of the albums released in recent times were just bad versions of the classics. To be fair, I was mostly listening to J-Gaze at the time.
>>
>>72159925
damn we're still ending up with all the beachhouse albums on the list
>>
>>72160371
It's not even dream pop, it just sounds influenced by it. Influenced by ≠ warrants discussion.

Tame Impala was directly inspired by MBV, but I wouldn't call them /shugazi/. If you really want to talk about Kendrick, there's around 8 threads in threes catalogue right now, we don't need to convert this one into the 9th.

It's a shame they never delved deeper into their alternative/experimental influences, especially with Brian Eno basically being a full-time member.
Some stuff on The Unforgettable Fire was straight-up dream pop, and since then he's used a lot of interesting guitar tones that could be sick outside of a pop-rock context.

One time I just downloaded a bunch of shoegaze for no real reason and I never looked back. Although, even before then, shoegaze did have that appeal that I always imagined and wanted psych rock to have. Psych rock didn't have it though, and shoegaze was both that and more intimate.

VDC and Ceres and Calypso were my first two albums in the genre, then I heard Loveless and it was all over. VDC is still one of my alltime favorites if only because it's one of those albums that I can come back to no matter how I'm feeling.

I heard about shoegaze in elementary school but I really wasn't able to get into it yet. I first got into Catherine Wheel sophomore year of high school after being a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan and finding them on youtube. I tried Loveless again that year and it clicked for me. I've been living in a hazey world of guitar noise ever since.

Sunbather has some amazing drumming and managed to use black metal techniques in an uplifting and beautiful manner contrary to the original intent of the style. Also it's structured really well and the two differing track styles that it switches between are all unique in some way so it doesn't get boring.

I don't know. Leaving is one of those really special albums so I don't know if BtH tops it, but it's definitely better than Desideratum. Funny you say that about his voice because I feel like he's gotten better as a singer on BtH, especially with the addition of screams.
My only complaint about the album is that a lot of the songs were too short, once he gets into a groove I feel like he could extend some of them a lot more (which is part of what I liked about Leaving, the tracks were droning and it seemed endless and exhausting at times).
Very strong album though, one of the best this year so far. I'm interested to see where he goes next, since this seemed like a continuation of the Desideratum sound.

Memes aside I think Sun Bat Her deserves the 2k13 spot. MBV was a nice treat from a well-loved band but realistically it was a ~7/10 and didn't cover any new territory.
Meanwhile, Sunbather brought a fresh spin to a previously niche sound, and brought an album of extreme music more mainstream popularity than anyone could have ever expected.

C&C just wasn't that exciting in any way (in my personal opinion)

I'm in the same situation. I'm listening to the Nowhere remastered version in a couple of minutes in order to see if it gets better with additional listens. I would have to do the same with Souvlaki, even though I've listened to it 3 times now.
On the other hand, these videos, along with learning to play I Only Said (which was an instant favorite when I first listened to Loveless), opened a new perspective for it to me.
