This is pretty obviously the most important/quality experimental pop record from 1995+. Saying otherwise is just contrarian.

>>72130295
I'd say it's Visions, also by Grimes. AA is a mere AOTY 2015.
>>
I've heard it compared to Avril Lavigne.
>>
>>72130295
Homogenic came out in 97
>>
>>72130657
Avril is nowhere close to Grimes' level. AA sounds like Grimes and no one else.
>>
>>72130695
So did OK Computer, and that was clearly way more influential (and actually good)
>>
what is

homogenic
or spirit they've gone, spirit they've vanished
or we must become the pitiless censors of ourselves
or dean blunt's the redeemer

come the fuck on
>>
>>72130295
Important in the 2010s so far, yes.
Most important since 95, I mean that's bait
>>
>>72130695
Homogenic is overrated. Only half of the songs from that album are great.
>>

Boring
>or we must become the pitiless censors of ourselves
Great album, but AA is better

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
>>
>>72130724
OK Computer, pop album? It's alt rock.
>>
>>72130695
Post and Vespertine are better, IMO.
>>
>>72130880
Unpopular opinion: Debut is her best album.
>>
>>72130724
>So did OK Computer, and that was clearly way more influential
So influential that Radiohead completely abandoned rock after it.
>>
>>72130890
I disagree, but I like it more than Homogenic as well. Only reason I didn't include Debut with my post is that it was released before 1995.
>>
>>72130880
>>72130890
I like Medulla as much as Post. Homogenic is the clear best though. Vespertine is overrated on this board

Their music is too blurry for my taste. They lack some cool melodies. It's wallpaper music.

>>
>>72131790
Visions is great, i don't know why you guys dont talk about it
>>
>>72131790

visions is painfully overrated
>>

>>
>>72131895
>painfully overrated
No. Visions is THAT good. I love this album desu.
>>
>>72131903
Not that I'm necessarily a great one too judge (I'm honestly more of a Halfaxa/Darkbloom fan desu) but faulting Art Angels for being too 'current' seems a pretty odd angle to take, given how openly referential AA is to sounds/styles of eras past (e.g. the 90s.)

i don't like grimes' music. that's subjective.

but her music is OBJECTIVELY not important. what artists or artistic movements has her music inspired? it's already derivative of older dream pop. it's not like she invented electropop with ethereal vocals and lots of reverb.

You do realize she stopped looking at the press and fans opinions many moons ago? As in, she's said this many times in her interviews she does not look at this stuff because when so many artists do they get dissuaded from continuing and then just fuck off into the ether.

I am most def. not a shill. I mean if I can get some coin from this praise i'm throwing her way, please point out where I can sign up.

Point of the matter is people like yourself just don't have anything better to do than piss away your time fighting in these threads, making asinine arguments when the fans are really interested in discussing her music.
>>
>>72134196
>just electropop
False. Songs like Scream or Life in the Vivid Dream are anything but electropop. Just because it has synths and it's catchy af it doesn't mean it's 100% electropop. Also art pop is a very vague term that means nothing (maybe just a hipster term that it's ok to listen to certain pop music with some noodling -- how fake is that?). Art pop is still pop.
>>

>>72134557

>>
>>72136005
>homogenic or person pitch
These 2 albums are highly overrated. They have many dull moments and some barely there songs, not enough to be called masterpieces. The best album in a category should be engaging from start to end, and Art Angels achieved that.
>>
>>72137764
i can't
>>
>>72136160
You can't say that and post that shitty Sophie album, ffs. You shot yourself in the foot. The whole PC music scene is a cheap gimmick with no future. It's already derivative of older synthpop and J-pop/K-pop and it has no artistic value.

>but her music is OBJECTIVELY not important.
Prove it.

>what artists or artistic movements has her music inspired?
Hold on, dude: it's too soon for that. Her career has barely 7 years. Influences and stuff could be measured after a longer period of time.

>it's not like she invented electropop with ethereal vocals and lots of reverb.
She didn't invent that. She invented electropop with ethereal vocals and lots of reverb AND influences from IDM, medieval/classical music, industrial, J-pop, alt rock, dreampop, etc. She took familiar elements and turned them into something original. There's no one like her. Prove me wrong.

>what artists or artistic movements has her music inspired?
Artists:
- The Avalanches
- Paul Thomas Anderson
- Skinny Puppy
- Richie Hawtin
- Alcest
- Soko
- Bloodpop
- MO
- Sia
- Owen Pallet
- Nigel Goodrich
- Jack Antonoff
- Lorde
- Majical Cloudz
- Fran Lobo
- Elton John
- Camp Howard
- Shirley Manson

And no - just because you don't happen to like any of these artists doesn't mean they don't exist.

As for movements: Why do you think it is virtually every major mainstream solo artist is suddenly at least partially self-producing their own records?
>>
>>72142411
Probably for practicality purposes. The music business isn't as profitable as it used to be. Having artists who know how to produce their own work helps cut costs.
>>
>>72142411
>- The Avalanches
>- Elton John
>- Richie Hawtin
>- Skinny Puppy

anon are you fucking kidding me? these artists are all older than her, and they've all had more profound impacts on music since before she even started making music.

i can't believe you're trying to say the inventor and pioneer of minimal techno owes inspiration to a synthpop artist who started making music two decades after his prime.

>elton john
this is even more ridiculous than richie hawtin. when was the last time elton john made culturally and artistically relevant music anon? before this chick was even born.

>As for movements: Why do you think it is virtually every major mainstream solo artist is suddenly at least partially self-producing their own records?

are you seriously trying to say that she invented the DIY ethos that defined the punk movement from the early 70s onward? after punk, then it was 90's indie rock. people have been glamorizing independence from the industry for decades

are grimesfags really this delusional? or are they just ignorant?
>>
>>72142592
Not at all this delusional anon. I think that's his/her perspective. I'd tend to agree with what you said there. She's only been active say 7 years and no she did not invent the DIY thing.

I think what she's recognized for however is that she does a lot of (in most cases all) the work herself. Such as singing, mixing, editing, etc her music, music videos, artwork etc. Again, that's my limited exposure to her work and what i've read in the various articles i've perused.
>>
Re: all the Bjork mentions in this thread - I know she gets labeled as "art pop," but I really don't consider her to be pop. I'll admit I'm no Bjorne expert, but it doesn't seem like her work is actively trying to be poppy and poptimist appreciative the way Grimes' is. Am I wrong?

>Probably for practicality purposes.
There's nothing practical about established mainstream solo artists with successful track records having others produce their own music (e.g. Lady Gaga or Lorde) suddenly producing their own songs despite no prior experience.
Good production takes studied practice (as in years.)

These people are now feeling compelled to produce works set for major release personally, despite not having the years of experience necessary to really do that. Why do you think that is so?

Yeah but even her unflattering pics are pretty in some ways. The people who are jumping on that bandwagon are just looking for shit to nitpick. As if they had a girlfriend she'd be perfect; damn they're going to have a hard time living with a woman if they really think that.

Women have a lot of disgusting shit that happens and they don't usually look all dolled up and if they're comfortable enough around you or you live with them, you'll get a few glimpses of just how unglamorous they can be. But that's okay, because us gents are supposed to accept that. Nobody is perfect.

There are plenty. Do they do everything she does? No. But i'm sure if you look, there are plenty of electronic or electro-pop artists out there.

Thing is though, she went ahead and experimented with a fuckload of genres so its' really difficult to recommend someone to you because depending on the album she went in a different direction. There was a comparison graphic floating around these forums and i'd use that to look for more of the same. But again, every album was different.

Her unflattering pics are mostly intentional:

>SM: How important is your image?

>G: If you’re performing, the way you dress, even if it’s just a shirt and pants, is a statement in itself whether you like it or not. I see fashion as a positive thing. I see it as a way to enhance the project, or as a whole other aspect that I can play with and use to my advantage. Though I make sure that I look like trash about 20% of the time so no one’s ever saying, “That’s what she looks like without makeup.” It’s like, “Everyone knows.”

Of course, you'll learn all that when you grow up a little more. If it is that your'e just young an inexperienced. I suggest you go through a few relationships to get an idea.

Exactly. These folks acting like some well established old artists wouldn't dare to be inspired by a newish artist like Grimes are frankly ridiculous and delusional.
>>
>>72144303
Well I would say it's harder for an established artist (say Elton John) to take influence from someone like Grimes (as was mentioned above) because he's established. His sound is his own. Grimes has her own sound.

What I mean is that the body of music is splintered into millions of pieces and each artist chooses which pieces of that body of music they will absorb and use in their own work.

But generally I also mean that newer artists tend to be impacted by older artists, rather than the reverse. But that's not to say it's impossible. It does happen in reverse.

There is a line of men (and women) who want to be with her. So what makes you so special? What are you offering her? Why would she pick you over who she's with now? I mean come on man. Get off it.

Do you mind me asking how old you are? You don't have to say exactly but an age range would be cool. You sound very young. This is puppy love, a crush, infatuation that you've got.

>Well I would say it's harder for an established artist (say Elton John) to take influence from someone like Grimes (as was mentioned above) because he's established. His sound is his own. Grimes has her own sound.
That influence could be subtle. It's not like Elton John will suddenly start making Grimes-style music. Maybe his new music will have some dreampop/synthpop elements, maybe it will be self-produced, maybe it will be more experimental, maybe it will feature a high pitched female vocalist, maybe it will have some groovy beats, whatever. The things is that Elton John really likes Grimes and that could affect his creative process. That's influence.

Yep. . Same reason they shill (((streaming services))) daily. It's about controlling communications mediums (and music is a very powerful one)

Same reason they're using various contracts to twist artists arms behind their backs to say certain things ( political and social engineering motives) Also same reason why they create straight up plant/spy/blackop artists such as Grimes.

Sounds crazy, but it's true. They've gotten bolder and bolder the last decade.

Also moderation of /mu/ compromised. Why they ban so quickly here as compared to other boards.

>A lot of Bjork songs are poppy as fuck.
Ergo not themselves pop. Bjork makes Bjork music that sounds like pop. Grimes makes pop music that sounds like Grimes music. They have completely opposite approaches to making music. Hence why I've never understood the logic behind limping them together.
>>
>>72144863
Uh well what the shit are we supposed to talk about on Mu anyway?! Cats? What people like is subjective, certain artists coming up over and over is because that's what they're hearing. That's what they like. If you don't like them, that's your business but that doesn't mean they're being shilled.

There is no reasonable way that threads like this are comprised of actual anons.

Is Grimes the most popular artist in the world? Does his representation here coincide w/ your experiences IRL?

Be VERY wary of anything attached to any corporate interests at all. I'm talking p4k, I'm talking music festivals, all of it.

They're not fucking around with trying to reign in the music industry, and completely collapse any entity not under corporate control.

It's not a joke.

I'm not going to come out and say your'e wrong. But look at the bottom right. Look how many people are posting. I could understand it was just ONE person posting but really?

>Devon is my best friend in the whole world, and perhaps the most secretly prolific song-writer I know. I think this song is about me being a shitty girlfriend, but I still think it’s really good.

Ah, I see.

I thought that was where one eye is a different color than the other. The multi-color eyes are common.

>>72146360
That's called complete heterochromia.

to the one anon who keeps making these threads and probably went to high school with her:
i really really hope your social anxiety is bad enough that you haven't seen sunlight since graduation- as much as i don't care for grimes, i don't want her dead at the hands of her stalker
>>
>>72147084
Anon, specific individual people don't make 300+ threads about anything on /mu.
>>
>>72147385
when you're a NEET, anything is possible
>>
>>72130295
i agree
>>
>>72147084
Anon, why are you seemingly posting about yourself ITT?
>>
>>72147412
>NEET
You need to start using different meme terms - it's making you too easy to identify (pic related: >>72144948 )

not me
also, to >>72147385

Anon, all of those posts being from the same person would make no sense.
>>
>>72146781
Imo it's a pretty interesting topic - strange eye features among famous people.

>>
>>72148460
I think it's a random coincidence. I don't think it's necessarily a trait of famous people.
>>
>>72147084
This. Some scarily into her peeps in this thread. Go outside people! Holy shit. There are literally millions of women out there. MILLIONS. And there are probably a lot of them who want to suck your cock. So stop pining for someone who doesn't even know you.

How can it be influential of nobody listened to it until /mu/ was created?
>>
>>72149557
>successfully being baited by waifufags
Anon, pro-tip: don't believe anything people say here unless it's backed up with actual external evidence.

>>72149525
Wasn't implying that desu. Just that it's interesting to look at the career paths of those who do/did.

An artist doesn't have to stick with the genre for an album of theirs to be very influential

You'll never understand because you have no idea how I feel about Claire.

>What if she was a total asshole in real life?
She is clearly the nicest person.

>She's flawed like all of us.
She is not. Even if she was then her imperfections make her even more perfect.

We're losing him. Dude's gone full grimes crazy. :/ We need to invent a term for this condition.
