Let's have a meta thread about /mu/!
What do you think of it and its posters?

I hate this place so much that even when I see something that I agree with it pisses me off

Bring tripfag culture back
No I'm not kidding

this is probably the only thing that could save the board, there needs to be certain gatekeepers of quality to keep things in check

t. use to be a tripfriend
>>
>>72125233
Nobody talks about music. People talk about musicians, gossip and personality of artists. But any understanding of music as a medium is nonexistent. It is possibly the most cucked board on 4chan. There is so much asshurt, it makes my ass hurt.
>>
It's okay for finding new music, but the pretentious culture surrounding /mu/core is nearly unbearable.
>>
>>72125278
>>72125297
tripfag culture is alive and well but it's confined itself to one single general (/daily/) which is bad for itself and arguably /mu/ as a whole

yes, but i'm biased since i was one of them, and i don't think antz was 'more recent'

Ban discussion of Kendrick Lamar until at least a month after his album has dropped. Failing that, make a sticky and delete any other threads to contain all Kendrick discussion until hype has died down. Hip hop is slowly ruining this board by bringing in brainlet teenagers who listen to nothing but meme rap.

pretty much sums this dumbass place up.

Unfortunately, it's still one of the better places to discuss. The rec threads are usually pretty good except too many lazyposters lately or entry level recs. The only other decent place are RYM forums.

Reddit is garbage for discussing because the way the site is set up anything outside of the typical norm gets buried or shit on because of a single downvote from some idiot. You can't even post discussion threads about specific artists unless they're in daily threads so no point in going there.

"containment" threads of cultures which largely stick to themselves are unironically the best threads on this board

>>

before /daily/ trips had to be able to defend themselves against hordes of anons, which could lead to fun and interesting discussions/shitfests
/daily/ are a bunch of buddies who all listen to what the other likes, so it's kinda boring
/mu/ is only really good for butting heads
>>
>>72125486
I frequent sputnikmusic and rym which are fairly good and they usually don't talk about the same 30 or so albums or artists which is one of the problems /mu/ has. Usually when I make a thread about an album I like that isn't too well known it'll get pruned in less than 30 minutes, which is one of the reasons I don't come to this board as often as I used to anymore.

Feels like an island board here sometimes, somewhere in between /tv/ and a gay board like /lit/. Like a combo culture. You have a handful of natives who only post here, a number of crossposters bringing fresh memes and amusements, then you have the serious listening maybe-poseurs coming in from other music sites. All three have to play a role or the whole thing will collapse into a /kpop/
>>
>>72125551
If you don't think the Kendrick spam is a problem you're either a newfag who's contributing to it or a complete fucking retard. No other artist attracts as many underage retards to /mu/ so they can dedicate a new thread to every thought that pops into their head. Also please at least try to make your posts coherent next time.

Fair enough, but the underage users that only listen to hip hop that come on here don't fully understand board culture, or how it works. Are you serious? Half this board hates Grimes, myself included. But we do make our distaste for her known. this is one of the main issues. i've seen some forced meme threads literally 100 times. the identical thread. but i guess it's not technically against the rules

a lot of the spam threads are just one person samefagging endlessly if you check the replies/posters. there's a guy who makes the annie hate threads. guy who makes xxx threads. there was the twenty one pilots poster

just between those three you have easily 1000 spam threads in the last year

I'm honestly tired of hip hop always over-taking discussion. I think it's because it's a lyrically focused genre (often), and so people can more easily talk about the lyrics and subject matter. People like talking about lyrics. So of course they're always going to talk about hip hop, always going to take about rappers and their feuds. It doesn't help that P4k covers hip hop more than most other genres now.

I don't have anything against hip hop, Im just tired of it being the dominant genre of discussion, for years and years. It's been this way since MBDTF dropped nearly 7 years ago and it's just continued on and on.
>>
>>72126387
which discussions do you feel like it's overtaken other than hip hop specific threads and the spam posts?

just trying to genuinely ask since i haven't seen that.
>>
genre /general/s are bad for the board

they are the only threads that will get discussion outside the /mu/core of their genres but it also means they're being contained allowing shitposting to run rampant and genres which aren't contained to take over.

There should be more than one thread for classical, jazz, bleeps and other genres not discussed, not just 20 rap and 30 rock
>>
>>72126477
seems like people are pretty forgiving when jazz, classical, and bleep leak since those posters are civilized (aside from the obvious trolls).

maybe not even just a rap general but a kendrick general since those threads turn into shit in 5 seconds and there are 70 of them.

tripfags do nothing but halt actual discussion. the thing about anonymity on a site like this is, it's all or nothing. you seldom get any discussion when there's one faggot in a thread who has no special responsibility or role (like being an OP) shitting the place up constantly. look at chart threads and how many tripfags just use the opportunity to shit on one another. look at tripfags and how many have a shitty self important mindset. the only solution is to ban any tripping/namefagging except thread-specific tripping.

It's not. Elitism sucks. People irl listen to all kinds of music, some popular, some less popular. Why would you force yourself to listen just to *approved* by *patricians* music, like a moron?
>>

>>
>>72127779
>. Why would you force yourself to listen just to *approved* by *patricians* music, like a moron?
it's about having an elitist attitude, not faking liking some obscure band

the elitism encourages people lurking more and not making so many threads about drawn out topics
>>
>>72127416
exactly, and tripfags don't use it for that. they use it to get attention.
>>
>>72127779
The sad thing is people who go on about elitism are usually /mu/ or Scaruffi drones.
>>
>>72127815

>>72127826

>>
>>72127804
Elitism encourages people to listen to the same set of pre-approved albums and to not try anything else because of the fear of being labeled as a pleb. Elitism in music really sucks. People should listen to whatever they want without being bullied because of their taste.

That pleb/patrician meme is the worst thing that happened on this board. Basically people are abusing it in a stupid manner: I like it -> patrician; I hate it -> pleb.
>>
>>72127884
>Elitism encourages people to listen to the same set of pre-approved albums and to not try anything else because of the fear of being labeled as a pleb.
you think of elitism as people following charts or something

i think of elitism as people actively seeking out albums not often discussed (opposite of what happens with charts)

i don't know if you were here before the patrician/pleb meme but i mean like it was before then
>>
>>72127848
look at literally any trip in any general thread (chart, daily, etc.) they don't NEED to trip or namefag, but they do it anyway because they like to have an identity.
>>
>>72127884

The funny thing is the elitist shit is cringeworthy as fuck in real life. Dudes are trying to fit in and get approval from other dudes that can't possibly have any real friends.
>>
>>72127995
no one NEEDS to do anything on a music board so that's a weird thing to say

chart threads they rec just like anyone else and are conversational. Daily is made for them basically and they share music. how is any of that upsetting to you other than them doing it with a trip?
>>
>>72126937
It's literally how every meta thread on 4chan goes. Full of "back in my day!!!" people, meanwhile during the era they were describing it was also full of people saying how shit the board has become
>>

Elitism forces people to justify their opinions if they are against the norm. As well you can be ostracized for only listening to "accepted" albums. It is better than a hugbox that accepts all albums and does not encourage critically listening to albums.

Meme rap general
All rap in HHG
Ban waifu posters if another big thread is already up. Usually there's one big Grimes/Bjork thread, but people feel the need to post outside of those. They should be banned.
I don't like the /soc/ threads: Favorite color an album XD

This would fix 80% of the problems. The board is just too flooded with rap and meme threads that get 5-15 post before they die. Discussion needs to be brought back. Indie needs to be brought back.

its interesting how jazz, classical, and bleep all have these pretty insular and cohesive subcultures. I wonder if it has to do with the "listening curve" that these particular genres have or if it's something else.
there isnt really a critical mass of people who will scoff at you for having "uneducated" opinions about meme genres because there is rarely the same sort of established corpus that shames the uninitiated into relative silence.

Rock, hip hop, etc, is the popular establishment and most people on /mu/ are familiar with the major works in them. You would hypothetically be scoffed at if you unironically came along and started praising Nickelback and Nicki Minaj in the same way you are if you go into /jazz/ or /classical/ praising Kamasi Washington and John Williams.
In all cases, they're perceived as inferior and more like a selling out of the tradition's ideas for mass appeal.
