I love this album but it rly has very little to do with metal besides those chugs underpinning everything. But honestly they feel more like an incidental rhythmic texture than the main focus

Feels more like a modern prog album to me. The big emphasis of soaring vocal melodies a la early Mars Volta and the pristine production of Steven Wilson. Some of the grooves remind me of his more recent stuff too

it definitely has djent tones to it with the chugging but somehow they made the chugging on altered state more intricate and interesting than anything Meshuggah ever did in my opinion.
