This is pretty overrated, but i don't think Phil was purposefully 'baiting' critics. I think this was a genuine catharsis for him.

Forrest fire and swims are pretty heart-wrenching songs, but i find myself just bursting out laughing towards the end of the album. Like it uses up my immersion for sadness early on then i just start rolling my eyes at some of the lyrics. Hope he and his kid are ok though.

Because there's nothing within this album that gives you a reason to care about him or his wife, he says nothing about who his wife was or what their relationship was like. I can't see someone without prior emotional attachment getting something from this.

The writing was very affecting. Despite the fact that it's not exciting or technically impressive it is, as a work of art designed to translate emotion into music and language, flawless. Some people simply aren't looking for art in music, so they won't appreciate this. Don't allow their denigration to change your opinion of the album.
