I'd just like to express my gratitude to OP for not posting the fucking useless links no one gives a shit about and for posting an Ovation Breadwinner. If ever a guitar needed to be reissued it is the Breadwinner.

Don't worry, faggots. It's a $150 guitar, BUT it has the Gibson headstock so that's why I bought it.
Doesn't play bad in the slightest desu, I just need to replace the cheap pickups after I'm done with this.

get it tight at a slower tempo and slowly speed it up until you can play it at the correct tempo

Regular sandpaper by hand because I lack the tools to do it properly. It's safer this way but it will also take ages to finish.

Cool. If you do get fed up a wood rasp is cheap at your local hardware store. I have done my fair share of woodwork in my dining room. Don't worry, the vacuum cleaner will solve it, saw dust is easy.

I'm rooting for you, anon. If you have something flat to wrap the sand paper around it will be easier.

What's the scale length?

Dan Erlewine suggests 3/64" string height at the 12th fret (on the low and high e strings) on 25.5" scale Gibson style guitars.
>>

Mine is Fender-style. From nut to bridge, scale length is 24.5 inches (might be off a bit since I had to measure it with a ruler).

and down the wabbit hole we go

sure it works but you should adjust your other pickups accordingly. get ready to start getting into underwound and over wound pickups, out of phase, and so on.

>>
What is /gg/s consensus on modding old vintage guitars to make them play better? I have an old Kent Hollowbody and it's beautiful but doesn't play too great. It needs bridge work and some new tuners and better wiring etc. Is it haram to do so?

>Underwound

>>
>>72079067
>underwound
Very mellow, great for high distortion due to the low gain adding some clarity, but good for not pushing headroom on a clean amp setting.

>overwound

Somewhat the opposite but used mainly to add a bit of drive to an amp.

>out of phase
Mainly means the wiring, though some pickups are wound and wired to be out of phase. Typically this was done in an attempt to cancel hum with single coils, though some like the sound.

Thats the basics, but way more to it and probably more accurate description.

Probably not so /gg/ related, but I was given an old 80s yamaha pss 470 for free earlier. Works pretty good, I even had the right power supply for it. I am going to attempt to dial in some sounds and use it on that quake 2 track.
>>
Alright, enough horrible descriptions.

Underwound generally just means a low number of windings. This will have lower capacitance, which results in more high end. It will also be quieter. Some positive terms people may use to describe them are jangly, crisp, and sparkly. They will have more overtones.

Overwound means a high number of windings, or more than are found on a typical pickup. These have higher capacitance, which results in less high end. It will also be louder. Some positive terms used to describe them are warm, fat, and smooth. They will have more fundamental.

In my opinion it is better to have lower output pickups, and one reason mid to high output pickups became popular is that more output was needed to push amps and be heard. Nowadays the amp can do all the work and plenty of pregain is available. However if you are someone who does not like to use the tone knob to get capacitance, a higher output pickup may be in your best interest. Personally, I have fairly mid range output, simply because these match the output of most stock pickups.

Out of phase is harder to explain verbally, but very simple with pictures. Two pickups are in phase if their signals do not cancel each other out. If they are out of phase, most of the signal is cancelled and the sound is quiet and thin.
>>
>>72079002
Pots and caps are not nearly as complicated as voodoo-selling snake oil-drinking guitarists will make you believe. To start, the material a capacitor is made of does not change the tone. The only thing that matters is the value.
>>
>>72079241

The keys arent discolored, tape residue isnt hard to get off, since it was just masking tape I can rub it off with my fingers if I wanted. Isnt too dirty and it works, cant beat that for free.

Meh, its like scuffing the paint off the back of a guitar neck. Some people prefer it slick, some prefer bare wood.

Im still not sanding them though. 30 year old plastic can be brittle and I dont want to introduce any cracks or what have you. Gonna take more than a few q tips though.

I'm thinking about buying some pedals to make a jazz guitar set, I'd like some piece of advice, I don't want to waste my money, and I've made some mistakes when it comes to pedals and effects (I bought an Alesis guitar fx, pic related, which is terrible).

Depends what you mean by jazz m8. A good reverb pedal should be all you need for most straight ahead jazz, add an overdrive if you're playing fusion and then go crazy with anything you want if you're playing more experimental shit.

I would stay away from multifx in general.

Fuck this is so much better than the guitar threads on /b/. Can't stand those wankers.

Anyway long story short I recently started learning guitar again and wanted your opinions on something:
I was already leaning towards seeking out professional tuiton and have found an instructor at a local conservatorium. Anyway, after consulting with a friend of mine who's been playing for a couple of decades, he also recommended it; saying that even if I only stayed to learn the basics off them it'd be good because they could correct basic fuckups and what not of my playing before I learn any bad habits.
You can probably guess which way I'm going regardless, but I'd like your thoughts on it anyway. Do you agree or would I be better of learning on my own entirely from scratch?
>>
>>72080032
Sure that's a fine choice. I would suggest the Neunaber Immerse since it also has settings for more ambient/modern jazz styles like stuff Bill Frisell, Jakob Bro, Ben Monder are doing .
>>
>>72080038
>Fuck this is so much better than the guitar threads on /b/. Can't stand those wankers

How fucking bad are they that they're worse than this? They're not even talking about guitars any more.

If you get a teacher to learn the basics you'll probably progress faster. You can learn better on your own once you have a solid foundation.
>>
>>72080077
Listen to this, this is why you want a good ambient reverb in jazz.

>How fucking bad are they that they're worse than this? They're not even talking about guitars any more.
Basically about 80-90% of the time it goes like this:
>You play an X? lol you're a fag.
>You mean you DON'T play a Y? lol you're a fag.
>You don't share my exact view of a broad and complicated subject? What's wrong with you?
Basically every smug, snobbish, arrogant and narrow minded view you'd expect from talking to shitty teenagers really.

That describes /gg/ way more than the occasional /b/ threads. Generally people on /b/ are more eager to share their gear and viewpoints since there's no pre-established norm for what the hivemind will like or hate. Makes for more varied, honest threads with less shitposting
>>
>>72080132
>Basically every smug, snobbish, arrogant and narrow minded view you'd expect from talking to shitty teenagers really

I'm afraid this thread is exactly the same most of the time.

This is some normie-tier advice, but remember to have fun when you're learning the guitar. If you make yourself resent the instrument you're not going to want to pick it up.
>>

I'm by no means an expert on amps, but from what I have heard and seen, with an orange amp, depending on model is that you can make tons of interesting sounds, but not many that are useable/musical, especially in a mix or a full band setting,
With marshalls, I've noticed you get more of a traditional sort of sound, which isn't at all a bad thing if that's what you're looking for, some models are better suited for certain genres than others.
Either way, look though models within your budget range and check out tons of reviews and demos, and go from there.
Hope you find a killer amp, anon.

The best sounding Orange amps dont even have anything else but a "Shape" knob that sound awesome in any position

My band played a pop punk gig last Saturday and everyone was dumbfounded by my amp since they've never seen the company before (Music Man), thought It wouldn't be able to handle heavy distortion, (it did) and tried to convince me to get an Orange/Marshall like everyone else.
We play and it sounds better than their stock amp distortion with a boost pedal and a $20 Fulltone OCD clone with the ability to change tone with a tap of the foot.
This got me wondering, when you guys shape your tone do you try to make it unique or do you look for the standard and professional sounds like everyone else?

Pic related is the correction I've made, tell me if I'm right or not. Also if somebody wants to transpose this to sheet music that would help my learning too (I'm really bad at figuring out the length of notes in terms)

Should I buy something with jumbo frets, or are they just a meme? My fingers aren't super small (no I'm not a fatass) and I wasnt sure if it would be a good beginner option. I played a little when I was younger and had basically bones for fingers and even then a beginner starcaster strat was seemingly small. Am I being retarded or is that a good option to go for? Looking to play more metal/hard rock stuff myself. pic unrelated

this.
Buy you guitar depending on the look, pickups etc.
Especially when beginner
>>
>>72083552
i'll fix the timings on the program later. for now im just working on getting the tone right so i dont have to tweak it again later

also it was recorded at 190bpm and slowed to 180, so the timing imperfections are bigger on that clyp

I just recorded something with my new electroacustic guitar.

It sounds good but has some background noise since it wasn't only strumming chords. How do I get rid of it without getting rid of all my effects in my virtual amp software?

>>
>>72085138
Its tricky.

If you can isolate the noise and sanple it, you can edit it out of the track.

Best bet is to record in an isolated environment. Cut out as much from the background, and move away from monitors and stuff that could cause a hum.

Unless you're willing to heavily modify the guitar and spend more money on parts, that guitar is only going to make you want to quit.

Get an Epiphone Les Paul Special II, a guitar to USB adapter (https://www.amazon.com/XFUNY-Guitar-Interface-Recording-Adapter/dp/B06XY44XJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491846850&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=guitar+link&psc=1) and some free virtual amp software for your computer.

Thank me later.

got some cash flow to spend on cashing a new bass tone

you guys got any suggestions? trying to get down a checklist of what i need

thinking to achieve something like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3KNj1U8iZM
nice and overdriven sound, i know jared warren is using boss overdrive pedals like the odb-3 and sd-1

with killer distortion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6nnQfItmBc

like how al cisneros splits his signal to get a good mixture of both overdrive and gnarly distortion

SansAmp Bass Driver or Bass Big muff are the only bass distortions worth a shit. Using guitar pedals that are good on guitar will make a bass sound like shit because the EQ isn't right.
>>
>>72085459
Do you know how annoying it is to have a capo hanging off of you or your guitar when you're trying to perform? Did you even run this through mentally?

Its better than throwing the capo on the ground and crying out for a cheap capo that wont break

Better idea: magnets

Have 2 humbuckers, 2 DPDT switches and a 3 way blade switch to play with. How should I wire my guitar? The bridge pickup coils will be in series, the neck pickup coils will be switchable between series and either parallel or single coil (haven't decided yet), the 3-way will switch between neck only, both pickups in parallel, bridge only.
What should I do with the second switch?

thanks i agree
yeah the sansamp is like the industry standard but i have the mxr m80

that bass big muff is sweetness and just read that it was based on the russian big muff. i also looked to wren and cuff tall font and it's sick though right now i'm in love with stomp under foot's civil war... too much muffs. if get the bass big muff it'll be the deluxe version

after some time on the interwebz i might look into getting a dod 250 preamp overdrive. al cisneros of sleep has one.

solidgoldfx beta, earthquake's white lighting and grey channel look be good alternatives for the 250

might combine one with the bass muff deluxe and run it through the mxr

Should I take a music theory fundamentals class or should I take a jazz guitar course?
>>
>>72088406
You'll probably struggle in the jazz guitar course if you don't have basic music theory knowledge.
>>
>>72088314
more like everyone is jealous when someone can actually play and just ignores it or bitches that it doesn't sound like a pro recording.
>>
>>72088406
why would you waste money on a course? you can learn it all online.
>>
>>72088406
IMO, depends on what you want to do.

I think taking the jazz guitar course would be better if you want to jam away with just emotion, which is awesome.

If you want to transition to composing, then music theory fundamentals are important. You could always learn them on your own, since honestly they aren't that hard, and you'll probably need a proper teacher more towards learning the (royal conservatory Canuck here) Basic Harmony / Harmony and Counterpoint levels. (which would be after you learn things like transposition, score types, cadences, et al.)

But again, that's all opinion based, and I am in no way a professional musician, just a nerd.

so post it

of course you can play as good
>>
>>72089389
first off stop curling your fucking pinky. And play with the proper shapes for the position you're in. Also your weird gangly alien fingers press the string oddly, can't totally tell exactly what you're doing wrong, but the intonations off.

Also lastly, stop noodling. It gives people headaches play something with musical integrity and people wont be as hard on you probably.
>>
>>72089473
>proper shapes for the position you're in
>being this much a beginner
dont know what you mean by that, but i go for intervals dude

>first off stop curling your fucking pinky
wtf. it looks cool and doesnt prevent me from using it whenever i want. also its not curled all the time, its a reflex thats depends on what the hand is doing

>Also your weird gangly alien fingers press the string oddly
whoa theyre pretty short actually. are you jealous of my stretching technique?

>can't totally tell exactly what you're doing wrong, but the intonations off.
neither do i. after all these years neither do i know why my notes sound out of tune.

>Also lastly, stop noodling. It gives people headaches play something with musical integrity and people wont be as hard on you probably.

>>
>>72089678
>neither do i. after all these years neither do i know why my notes sound out of tune.
>dont know what you mean by that, but i go for intervals dude
You need to take a step back and take some beginner lessons on how to properly utilize your fretting hand, your technique screams self taught bedroom player.

>ok imma play your eddie vedder songs

Eddie vedder? That's what you're playing. How about Chopin, mozart and Paganini. All you're doing is running up and down scales then playing the root at the end plus using some cliche hammer on stuff.

Put down, the electric, pick up a nylon and then you're forced to become good at the instrument. But seriously, take a step back take some beginner lessons you need them I think you could really really really really benefit, could even become a good guitarist you got the gangly alien fingers for it.
>>
>>72089206
Yeah, not bad, your timing is OK, but technique is kind of flawed. As >>72089473 said, try to avoid curling your pinky, and it's going to be easier moving into more advanced movements if you try to keep your fingers a bit more straight (when you were barring chords, some of your first knuckles looked like they were at 90 degree angles).
You could use some fingering guides, just check youtube for it, good form helps you down the line.

Also, try to keep your thumb in the middle of your guitar's neck, it helps with reach, when you start moving around faster.
