I love Closer and I know it's similarities but to me Atrocity Exhibition (the song) sounds nothing like The Downward Spiral. I agree with you as far as I can tell that the influence is there but it's far more different than just having arrhythmic drumming. It sounds like it was made in a swamp and the bass sounds like a steel pedal guitar. Plus Danny's voice just makes the whole track wild.
