Fucking this. This is coming from a huge fan of them. I loved Demon Dayz and S/T. Plastic Beach is one of my favorite albums of all time. I even kinda liked The Fall. These new songs just don't do it for me.

Saturnz Barz and Andromeda sound like Gorillaz songs. They have a decent balance of Albarn and the guests with the vapid lyrics Gorillaz is known for and they sound unique enough. I wouldn't hear a Jamaican rap with a Brit on any other song. They're basically the dance song or Dare of this album to me.

The others though, are pretty lame. They're too influenced by the guest singers. A black guy singing about niggers shooting a white man in Gorillaz is just wrong. It's not what the band's about. They've always mixed and combined good qualities of different music genres to produce something unique and interesting to inerpret. Half the lyrics you can't even understand but it doesn't matter because it conveys a unique mix of feelings with the sounds and harmony of the songs. I'd argue Plastic Beach is their best album as it has an odd cohesivness to the entire flow of the album and I'd descrive it as an album movie, odd as that sounds. It's just so unique and has so many sounds and tastes to it while conveying an undestandable theme.

The new songs are all upbeat and poppy, which is fine, Gorillaz can manage that just fine, but it's really seeming to be a Guests feat. Gorillaz album than the other way around, so the quality's gonna reflect that. If they keep getting shit guests for the rest of the songs, it's gonna be a bad album overall, even if they can make a shit guest work decently in a good song, if this trend stays true to the album, it's gonna suck.
