I have a very specific musical fetish: I like one-album bands (mainly from the 90s) that have a unique sound. Maybe the guitar tone is gorgeous in either a raw or clean way, maybe the riffs defy the genre's expectation without forfeiting its tag, maybe the vocals are pretty unique or maybe it's a holistic combo. Some of those bands may have released another album or an EP but they're remembered (at least amongst those who remember it) by that one lone magnum opus that often goes years and years undetected until it surfaces and becomes a forgotten classic.

Some examples might help: Ved Bens Ende (of course), Inferi, Sort Vokter, dISEMBOWELMENT, Murmuüre, Demilich, Mysticum (let's ignore Planet Satan for continuity's sake), Molested (pre-Borknagar project by Oystein; sounds like a brutal Soulside Journey had ludicrous sex with a polished Bergtatt), Night Sun, I guess I should add Thorns since that second album that was announced like 10 years ago isn't gonna come out any time soon, Algol, Kvist, etc (I'd probably come up with a bunch of other examples, but I hope you get the idea).

Can you think of any bands/albums that cover this criteria? One-album bands that had a unique sound and are criminally ignored? Any subgenre/style suits me.

If you're looking for raw, primeval extreme metal violence you won't find anything better than Morbid Visions. If what you want is refined, almost deathmetalesque thrash R I F F S and the quality of production that make such classic late 8s early 90s DM albums so memorable, you should go straight to Beneath The Remains. Schizophrenia would be the perfect point of balance between those two aspects of the band, and Arise is one of the best thrash albums of the "mature" (let's say post-thrash but not in the technical thrash way) era of thrash that also gave us albums like Coma of Souls and Soldiers Of Misfortune. If you're gonna listen to a groove metal album it might as well be Chaos A.D.

And Bestial Devastation is what you need to listen to if you want a bite of that era of metal when a sufficiently raw and violent album was simultaneously death and black metal before either thing existed in any immediately identifiable way.

I'm not against it as such but then I'ma big Lovecraft fan, I guess you're right in terms of it being done to death as a theme. What always disappointed me is I don't think I've ever heard a band that actually captures any of Lovecraft musically, I don't even know what that would actually sound like, compositions that gradually raise tension and dissonance I guess

At some point in my life I also became desperate to find something else that hit me the same way Bergtatt did. Sadly nothing ever did, but those albums I mentioned help scratch the itch. Still, Borknagar (the album) is basically the other Bergtatt, except a lot more hard-hitting and riff-centric. Like coating Under The Sign Of Hell with paint made out of Drudkh's first two albums (did I recommend those two already? I really should have.)
