Speaking as an old fart who was in high school when Hot Fuss came out, the main reason is that Hot Fuss was such a seminal record. We didn't really have synth-driven pop rock before that album, and after it, it was everywhere. Every song from that album was everywhere, even the deep cuts. People lost their fucking minds over Hot Fuss. I read multiple articles explaining how it was actually a concept album about a gay football player named Andy who murders his girlfriend to pursue a homosexual relationship. I wasn't even a fan of the album, and I still think I could probably sing all the words to "On Top."

What album you do you think is perceived as her "best" work?

I usually see Actor or Strange Mercy

Yeah, those are good albums, but I like this one. It's charming in a tongue in cheek smirk kind of way. All of her albums have that running through them a little, but it's sound fairly upfront on this album with the lounge jazz ballads.
