Mastodon are pretty shit at writing vocal melodies. It always sounds like cheap prog apart from a few stand-outs like the chorus in Oblivion, They were better when they were screeching and growling incoherently. Maybe that's what made them write better music, they had to compensate with actualy originality in their instrumentals.

Man, I wanted this album to be good so badly. There are definitely good parts, even good songs, but there are also some terrible, cringe-worthy moments, and even a couple parts that made me literally laugh out loud from how ridiculous they were.

However, I will say that the sound of this album captures the aesthetic of the cover, and the concept fucking PERFECTLY.

I'm really hoping it grows on me, because I really like some of the songs here, and they definitely sound way more passionate and energized than they have since CtS

To be honest I don't remember specifically where most of them occurred, I only listened to it once last night and I wasn't looking at the tracklist. But the first line in Roots Remain was one of the moments that made me laugh, as well as the delay on the vocal at the end of that one song, where the singer was doing this really goofy sounding growl. The vocals in the verses of Word to the Wise are goofy as fuck too. Also, Show Yourself is just embarrassing. And the other moments where the album goes full buttrock are pretty bad as well.

I'm listening again now and enjoying it a bit more, but still not nearly as much as their pre-Hunter stuff

Why is it so forgettable? Usually after one listen of an album I can remember the best parts from multiple songs or think of parts I want to go back and listen to again. I got NONE of that from this album. It's a steaming pile of horseshit unfortunately, by far their worst album. At least The Hunter has some catchy, MEMORABLE songs. Once More 'Round The Sun is 100000000x better than this trash.

Leviathan is more similar to Remission than it is to any of the albums that come after it. With Metallica RtL, MoP, and AJFA form a trilogy, while Kill Em All stands out as being pure thrash, similar to other bands in the genre.

Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye are two different takes on "prog". Blood Mountain is experimental, but restrained in form, like Red or Discipline. Crack the Skye is lavish with long songs and a tighter overarching story, like 2112 or Caress of Steel.

Mastodon didn't sell out nearly as hard as Hetfield/Ulrich inc. did. The only real crime of The Hunter is that it has too much filler. This was corrected on OMRTS. Neither album is as good as the first four, but they have their moments.

I liked all the songs from this album, even Show Yourself. I like all of their songs in general, even. Met the band yesterday in Atlanta too, great guys. Only thing is I feel like they used a few too many ideas from their previous works in this album. One solo reminded me of one from Crack the Sky. Andromeda has one of the best riffs I've heard in awhile though so I started learning how to play it already.

I can't fucking stand this subsection of metal fans stuck in a world from about 2004 who think that everything needs to be odd time thrash riffs with fucking edgy goblin vocals to be considered metal.

Sure, Mastodon is more prog than anything now. I can't help but feel the same about Baroness these days, but the fan butthurt about them is much stronger.

Don't mind that all these bands are a decade and a half older than when they released their debut material and have done stuff like, I dunno, had families, improved their musicianship, changed tastes, etc.

Leviathan and Blood Mountain are still their best work. I enjoyed Crack the Skye, in fact I loved it. I just think Mastodon works best as great sludge with prog elements.

Fucking Hearts Alive is one of my favorite songs ever. What a masterpiece. Blood Mountain is just a great experience start to finish, and has more prog elements than Leviathan. It really is the bridge between Leviathan and Crack the skye and I think combines the best elements of both those albums. That said, honestly I would really have a hard time picking between Leviathan and Blood Mountain.

The only song that really stood out to me was Jaguar God.
Listened to the album twice now, but unfortunately it just feels like a watered down version of Crack The Skye.
Oh, and I wish they'd use Brann less frequently as the singer. 8 times out of 10 it doesn't work for me at all.

the early combo of show yourself/precious stones/steambreather was really disappointing, but gladly pretty much everything from roots remain onwards sounds really really good. I can't really understand the hype for jaguar god though, sure the solo is cool but the song segments feel really disjointed and it just doesn't flow as well as the similarly proggy songs from crack the skye.
