Kendrick is pretty good on here though. The first verse is really great, the second verse is okay, could've done without the insane amount of "ayy"s though.

Kendrick is dealing with different forces of racism and is looking for a way to cope.

His mother straight up tells him to stop acting like a victim, it'll never get him anywhere. Kendrick is taking a hit at black people, maybe even more direct at black people in social media, constantly playing the victim card. He has actually been attacked by a few black celebrities, including Azelia Banks, for that.

He is also implying that, additionally to systematic, structural racism, there is another form of racism in America. He goes one step farther and holds up a mirror for his black people:

If you behave like a gangbanger, if you live like a thug, if you talk like a moron and generally behave ignorant, then you are perpetuating racial stereotypes. A lot of black people, famous black people that the youngsters look up to, act like that. He's adressing the faults of the black community.

There is an essay by Frantz Fanon titled Black Skin, White Masks. Not like anyone here would have read that, but if you had maybe you would understand where Kendrick is coming from.

There is a mental image that us whiteys have of 'the nigga from the projects' and instead of offering a counterimage, media, like BET for example, just fixate that image even more. Surprised so many people don't like this track. Wasn't a huge fan of TPAB, I missed the playful but witty Kendrick. This track shows he still has it. Instrumental wasn't out of this world or anything, and I'm not a huge fan of the chorus (although catchy), but the bars were on point and the video itself is easily one of the best he's ever done. Usually not a fan of music videos (especially in hip-hop), but this one is quality.

Having heard Humble I can see I made the right move

Kendrick is weirdly out of touch for a rapper.
Usually rappers have their fingers on the pulse of culture, and are able to swiftly insert their catch phrases and throwaway lines into the popular ethos. Kenny did that a ton on Good Kid, but his attempts since have been almost offputting.

Straight up, none of that sticks for me.

Kenny seems to almost be trying too hard to be idiosyncratic in the world of hiphop. Which would normally be a reasonable idea, but just being Kendrick is already enough. I mean, he's a little man with a higher-pitched voice than most rappers. He's wise and optimistic, and if you've ever seen him perform live, he can work over an audience like nobody else. He speaks and you fucking listen.

A song like this accomplishes what it sets out to do despite >>71894420 your deadly-accurate description of the beat (Stale. Lame.), and some of his lyrics are too on-the-nose here. But the hook works for me. First time he repeated the "sit down, be humble" I smiled. Because only Kendrick can be Kendrick, and while he hasn't been delivering on what we know he's capable of, he's still the only one out here doing it, so we'll keep listening.

What "Black Lives Matter album" refers to is more the critical reception than the content of the album itself, even though Kendrick himself made this connection explicit in promotional, paratextual material (notably the video for "Alright").

Kendrick is trash now because all of that praise obviously went to his head and he's positioned himself as this "rap savior" sort of figure, writing the kinds of lines that "I only like REAL rap" kiddies are going to hear and say, "that's EXACTLY what's wrong with hip-hop these days". It's only a touch above rockism and respectability politics IMO, and people like you are as out of touch as Kendrick is.
