Fux Counterpoint if youre trying to write polyphonic music

Itd help me recommend more if you explained your goals in music writing, what medium you want to write for etc

As far as software goes you cant go wrong with Finale, be warned it takes time to learn but its the best by miles

Sorry for being vague; I really just want to write music because i want to express myself and try to create art (though i guess that might be more composition than writing now that i think about it).

learn to play an instrument

I've been wanting to, but i don't know where/how to start. If i just learn to play songs i like, would i really learn how to make music?
What would you recommend?

Sorry for being a bit dumb.

What music you planning on making

what sort of music do you like?
if you like guitar music learn guitar
if you like keys music learn keys

you will slowly be able to improvise better and better over time which is how music is made, it'll take a few years though, there are no short cuts

I recommend picking an instrument that you think you'll like, start trying to learn a few songs, and start using a little music theory to help you understand what's going on
Then try improvising to some drums or a backing track

The earlier you can start playing by yourself (not just playing songs you've memorized) the more fun you'll have with the whole process.
Practice some rhythm excercises and use a metronome so you don't sound like ass the first time you try to play with someone else

Thanks for the tips guys! I think i'll try to learn to play piano, since i can do both acoustic and electronic with it!

Piano is the instrument of choice for understanding music theory, because its all laid out for you in a direct fashio
