The Beatles
>lots of pop ditties with mass appeal, simple and accessible
>without George Martin they would be just another pop band
>dated
>super-pleb
>sample lyrics: Ob la di ob la da life goes on bra / La la how the life goes on / Ob la di ob la da life goes on bra / La la how the life goes on
>The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art.
Grimes
>deeply emotional and complex sounding tunes with lots of layers
>produces her own music
>modern
>patrician
>sample lyrics: Oh lord cause I don't wanna know what they say / Cause I get carried away / Commodifying all the pain
>Grimes exists on another planet, while everyone else revs up their rocket engines to play catch-up. The word genius is thrown around too lightly these days. Here’s one, right here.
Who is better?
>>71822093
Beethoven.
let us all ignore this shit thread and move on okay?
Take a look at these trips
I still have no idea who Grimes is
>>71822093
You know you're cherrypicking.
>>71822099
roll over
simple music is actually better than technical wank
it's why john lee hooker will never be outshined by some prog/metal band
>>71822093
I agree but Grimes is a smelly cunt.
>>71822193
John Lee Hooker, now there's a cunt that nobody listens to for pleasure anymore.
>>71822193
Writing simple-sounding songs, of course, is not simple. And some of the Beatles' stuff doesn't even sound that simple.
>>71822093
Grimes
>Young and don't know nothin bout good music
>Only 4 (four) (Quatro) albums
>Only does boring tacky gay ass synthesizer pop
>Bothers with lyrics
>Doesn't use the top tier synths
>possibly Anti Herbie
Sweet Saint Herbie
>Old, experienced, and quite handsome
>Over thirty (three-teas) albums
>Has done Funk, Jazz, Disco, Electronic, Hip Hop, and single handedly invented Vaporwave
>Lyrics is fucking gay
>Uses the top tier synth brands
>Herbie nigga
Checkmate, atheists.
I listened to grimes and now Spotify thinks I'm gay
>>71822303
Bullshit "argument" and you know it.
>Only does boring tacky gay ass synthesizer pop
Tell that to your Saint Herbie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHhD4PD75zY
Checkmate, idiot.
>>71822323
That's bollocks. Those 2 "artists" don't sound at all like Grimes. Their algorithm sucks.
>>71822358

He's done everything.
Checkmate, Canadians.
>>71822464
He had a long career, buddy. But Grimes's small discography is pretty diverse if you think about it: from barely there soft tunes like Heartbeats to raging songs like Scream.
>>71822551
If she does a Jazz Funk album I promise you she'll get a 200/10 just like Herbie did.
(But just to clarify, I'm meme-ing. Her albums are decent)
>>71822574
>Her albums are decent
I knew you had shit taste herbiefaggot but wow
>>71822093
>>71822574
What about a classical album? Grimey loves classical.
I like Grimes.
>>71822679
Nope. Jazz funk.
Or just an album of string instrumentals like the intro to art angels.
>>71822627
>Likes Herbie
>Shit taste
Pick one.
Also you could either be someone who hates grimes or a grimesfan who insists "GRIMESISALWAYSAMAZINGNOTJUSTDECENT" with that comment, hard to tell.
>>71822729
Not that anon, but Grimes is actually amazing not just decent. I like Herbie too.
>>71822844
AA was an 8
Haflaxa was a 7
Geidi and Visions were a 6.
Completely unbiased ratings.
>>71822093
Grimes is obviously better than the worst band ever existed on this stupid planet.
>>71822230
dude, what the fuck, have you heard the actually good john lee hooker records? like the graveyard blues album? that's some droney haunting hypnotic shit.
>>71822093
both are pleb as fuck
>>71822873
>Visions
>6
That hurts. Visions is either a 9/10 or a 10/10.
>>71822942
Let me guess...
Every Grimes album is a 10/10 and she can do no wrong??
If Herbie can do wrong (which he has) so can Grimes.
>>71822954
>Every Grimes album is a 10/10
No, but Visions is
>>71822913
>both are pleb as fuck
Not Grimes.
>pleb: member of a despised social class, a commoner, a member of the plebs of ancient Rome.
What is common about her? No one is like her and her music is not mainstream, and yet it's hugely acclaimed. In a word, she's patrician.
>>71822954
>Every Grimes album is a 10/10 and she can do no wrong??
No. Just Visions is 10/10. Art Angels is 9/10, Halfaxa and Geidi Primes, each 8/10.
>>71822093
Paul McCartney's solo career is better than Grimes!
Grimes has not had any good songs in years. I like the one that goes "LaLaLaLa" When I hear it on the radio some times.
So I just listened to Grimes for the first time. Shite. Why do people like her again
>>71822967
>no one is like her
She plays ableton-tier synthpop for fuck's sake.
Also, if you are going for literal definitions, she is not from the ruling class, so she isn't patrician either.
>>71823027
>Grimes has not had any good songs in years.
Dude her latest masterpiece was released in 2015...
>>71823027
>Grimes has not had any good songs in years.
Wew. Some say ignorance is a bliss though.
>>71823070
>She plays ableton-tier synthpop for fuck's sake.
You're stupid. Ableton Live is just a tool, like a fucking guitar. It matters what you do with what you have.
Just because it's synthpop it doesn't mean there are SIMILAR ARTISTS to her. Prove me wrong.
>>71823070
>she is not from the ruling class
Her mother is not a pleb:
>Sandy Garossino is a former Crown prosecutor and prominent media commentator.
Her father too:
>her father is an executive at a biotechnology company
>>71823051
The reason why Grimes tends to get so much vitriol directed her way by her detractors is because she excels at making subversive art.
Nearly every aspect of her visual art or music that you can name is pretty easily traceable to an obvious source of inspiration (as long as you know where to look.) However the purposes to which she puts things are almost always completely alien to the originals, meaning that - for people favourably inclined towards her artistic style - consuming her art enables you to see/experience things you already know about in a new light. The experience is literally mind-expanding. It's disturbing - in a good way.
However, for people who don't happen to like her artistic style or subversive art in general, this purposeful introduction of unfamiliarity regarding already known things tends to make people upset and angry. Add to this the incredibly personable manner in which she has always interacted with fans online from day one, and it should be no mystery why she always manages to inspire such epic levels of controversy - despite not really being all that controversial herself, technically speaking.

>>71823409
You're speaking like a Beyonce fan, bruh...
>>71822913
Why would I listen to John Lee Hooker? Why would anyone do that?
>>71823496
You don't seem familiar with Grimes' fanbase outside of /mu/ (i.e. her ACTUAL fanbase)
>>71823393
If you're going to write three paragraphs, check the definition of "controversial" first. If someone inspires controversy, they are controversial. "Controversial" doesn't mean "argumentative".
>>71823393
>you already know about
Love it when entry-level people pretend they aren't.

it's all a hilarious ruse

I bet they're cute too.

>>71823878
>being this delusional
The biggest meme is that Grimes is a meme. Many people like her music FOR REAL.
Is this bait?
>>71823878
grimes is delusional in all aspects. look at her instagram and all the retarded political stuff she posts about. she is far from a "genius" in every way and every male on here who is obsessed with her is quite simply some emasculated porn addict
>>71824286
>mad at grimeth

The sad thing is that these are probably the best Grimes lyrics. Grimes and Beatles both bad lyricists but Grimes is worse.

>he doesn't know that "Grimes" is literally just a multimedia project and not an actual person
I mean - yeah, Claire Boucher goes out of her way to imbue it with genuine facets of herself, but even the official Facebook page goes out of its way to explain that the whole thing is no more "real" than your use of proper capitalization or punctuation.
>>71825209
What kinds of music do you normally listen to?
>>71825539
Dat anon, BTFO!
>>71825645
Why does that even matter
>>71825728
There are three groups of music listeners who like Grimes' music:
A. People who like Grimes' sound.
B. People who like the sonic stylings of one or more of her albums.
C. People who like both of the above.
And since each of Grimes' albums differs radically from the others in terms of style (and she likes to imbed her own unique musical identity into whatever the style may be for that particular album) the only way to determine whether or not you are, in fact, a fan of Grimes' music is to listen to an album of hers that is written in a similar style to music that you already like (assuming one yet exists.) Hence pic related. The only way to accurately determine whether you are a member of Groups A or C is to first make yourself a member of group B.
Her music can actually be quite hard to get into, at first. It took me years.
>>71825539
wow... a multimedia project you say? now that you say that.....
her music is still worthless and her political agenda is still retarded
just because i am not using MLA-approved grammatical structuring on an imageboard doesnt make what i am saying incorrect

No. But it does make it a while lot more obvious desu.

But none of those genres are my most-liked because they're all different words for "mediocre pop shit."
>>71826844

>>71826621
all that talk about grammar and you still forget the comma after your "But", nu-male
>>71826915
Because I didn't use it as a subjunctive between clauses.
What genres of music do you like listening to?
>>71826915
Not that anon, but comma is optional in that place, numale.
