I think ITAOTS is pretty good, but it's not something I would mention if somebody asked me what music I like.

TVU&N is a great album, and the rest of their discography is good, too.

I have an emotional connection to Spiderland; it was one of those albums that got me through the hard times, so it's my favorite out of all of these.

Kanye has a lot of great stuff, and if somebody asked me about my favorite rappers I'd definitely mention him, but his last three albums haven't been that enjoyable to me. MBDTF is alright, but it's one of my least favorite out of his discography.

If MBDTF wins, it will cause the third impact. Make it happen, /mu/.

The Velvet Underground's best album isn't even there. Their debut is among the worst albums that was voted for. Spiderland is almost as bad.

I'll admit that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is near perfect, but it still is embarrassing to see it get so far.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is somewhat embarrassing to see as well, but it's the best album here, so whatever. Hopefully the ultimate /mu/ meme album wins, I suppose. :|

Kid A is essentially applying their own aesthetic to the ambient/IDM of the time. In that sense you can call it a derivative work, but I don't think that's completely fair. You don't need to be depressed to enjoy it of course, but it is sad music, and I think it does a far better job at communicating emotion than most of Aphex Twin's/Autechre's work of the time, even if it's not as original or complex.

i don't really think those are true. it seems to me that having a baseline exposure to those records is essential, but kids get trashed all the time for having only this shallow 'taste". it seems like the only way to get praise (even if faint) is to introduce new/interesting shit. (but maybe this is just true of the list/chart threads.)

I personally think you can find out about more interesting music without having to listen to the /mu/core first.

When I first joined /mu/, instead of going for all the /mu/core first, I decided to keep a list of albums to listen to, and if an album title/cover caught my eye, no matter how obscure or mainstream, I'd add it to that list. That's what I've been doing for years now, and it's worked out fine for me. In fact, I still haven't listened to all of the "essential" /mu/core, and it took me years to get around to listening to ITAOTS.
