Saturnz Barz sound a lot like a run of the mill Major Lazer song, I feel a bit cheated considering most of the time Gorillaz felt like it was it's own thing but they're sorta chasing a simple party track album so far. It's not bad, but not really great either.

I don't know about you all but I think Damon has a power with Gorillaz, and it's that everytime there are first impressions is extremely mixed, but then having another listen to it you just can't stop it, I believe it's going to happen with Humanz because it happened with Demon Days and Plastic Beach, everything was mixed until the other listen to it made a change.

I actually loved the three tracks except for Ascension, but i'm legit singing that song because the hook Is so damn catchy.

Fuck no. I liked all of those to some extent on first listen. Even growers like Stylo or the non-singles on S/T were more palatable on first listen. These tracks are just dull and unexciting. Saturn Barz and Ascension are shittier rap tracks than previous ones with the former's reggae influence having been far less intolerable on S/T, Andromeda is shittier synthpop than Plastic Beach, Hallelujah Money is like the best songs from D-Sides if they misfired, and We've Got The Power is a throwaway "You can do it!" sort of rousing number that are a dime a dozen. Gorillaz has done all this shit before and done it better. These are just not very good songs across the board. The only real novelty here is perhaps the spacier vibe of some of these tunes which could be interesting if they weren't inherently so weak.

No, the issue is that they're just writing bad songs with subpar features. I think Damon is definitely trying to make a pop record here but that he also spent a lot of time to make it a great one - production and songwriting are both great on all these songs imo, the sound is much fuller and more fleshed out than Plastic Beach's minimal synth and drum machine arrangements
