Please give me some help on pinky anchoring bros. Is it bad or not? Does it limit your speed and accuracy or put strain on your wrist? My favourite guitarist John Frusciante does it, Guthrie Govan does it, John Petrucci does it, Mark Knopfler does it, but many don't do it and say it's really really bad. I'm still new and I want to make sure that I don't develop a really bad habit that will be hard to break down the line.
>>
>>71743149
Works for me. If it works for you then it works. It makes your picking much more accurate than if your hand was just floating in mid air.

Is there a difference in tone or sustain between a wraparound tuneomatic bridge and a tuneomatic with tailpiece but stringed topwrapped?
Both will have less tension than a bridge+tailpiece stringed the regular way and the resulting slinky feel and sound. So the playability is the same.
But the topwrapped tailpiece one will have the more string length, and will have the tailpiece sitting tight to the wood, giving more vibration transfer to the body

Personally I'd still recommend against adding a contour. It seems to me that with every bit you shave you're decreasing the amount of stress the guitar can take by a little bit. It'll be impossible to tell where the line between over-engineered strength and flimsy is. The main concern I would have would be sealing the wood afterwards. This kinda makes it a big project for a small result.

Anyways, you van always sell and buy a new guitar. You can get a neck through as low as $300 if you look.

>>
>>71743845
Headphones aren't 8 or 16 ohm impedance, they're much higher than that.

Tube amps need to have a speaker load (resistance, impedance) that matches what the output transformer expects to see. If you have a mismatch then you will damage first the output tubes then the output transformer.
>>
>>71743797
I know. But im asking if there is still a way to get headphones working with one. I red somewhere that a adapter fucks up the sound so im not sure idk.

I'm upgrading my guitar and this is my first time changing pickups. What wires am I supposed to cut?
>>
>>71746629
If you cut the red one you will go boom.
>>
>>71746629
Looking at that, I'd say red and blue are for the two tone controls, yellow is the hot to the volume control, black is ground and the three gray wires are the pickup hots for bridge, middle and neck. But that could well be neck, middle, bridge reading left to right.

So the new pickup's hot wire (the not black one!) goes to the switch and the ground wire (probably black) goes onto any ground point, usually the back of the volume pot.
>>
>>71745350
I'm thinking about getting a pathfinder 10 actually. Is it worth it? Its cheap, but I dont want it if its complete shite. I've heard good things about htem, tho.
>>
>>71746690
Here's how to check it. Might need three hands here, maybe ask an adult to help you.

Select bridge pickup, plug the guitar into an amp
Hold or tape the new pickup's hot lead on the far right terminal of the switch
Hold or tape the new pickup's ground lead on the back of the volume pot

Now hit the pole pieces of the new pickup with a screwdriver and you should hear a loud clunk noise through the amp. If you don't (or you hear a quiet clunk noise) then try the hot lead onto the third switch terminal from the right of that pic.

yes, but less likely to break overall

the solution to both of these things is to just your fucking bridge screws or finger rollers to raise the tailpiece. there's no reason to have it dropped to the floor, and it will make the break angle from tailpiece to bridge much less strenuous on that stretch of string, which results in a lot less breakage.

>>
>>71749721
how it that different from putting it via classic way of guitar -> pedal -> line in ?
>>
>>71749721
Do you want to use reverb, delay, or modulation effects while using high gain from the amp? Then get an effects loop

>>71749742
It's about how the signal flows - where the effect is introduced. If you go guitar -> reverb -> amp distortion, then the reverb itself will be distorted and break up and sound ugly. Through the effects loop you basically get guitar -> amp distortion -> reverb, which gives you a much cleaner reverb sound after the distortion. Effects loops aren't as important if you're always playing with a clean tone

If you have lots of experience with performing professionally you can get a job teaching with no degree at most community music schools. Having a degree just kind of looks good for the company website, but it's really just gravy and not what the owner will really care about. The most important factor to the business owner is that you know how to to retain students, because that's what makes them money.

theory scares me

but it's time to stop being a baby at guitar and actually play the instrument, not it play me
>>
>>71750832
Practice with a metronome or with the song. If you fuck up, keep going. Follow what the song is doing, not what you think its doing. If you play along with the song you'll be forced to keep going. Even if it takes you 8 bars to find where you are, one step at a time you'll get there.
>>
>>71750425
Practice it slowly till you get it perfect. Either way it doesn't actually have to sound perfect because ideally the guitar isn't the only thing you're recording.
>>
>>71750425
strum anyway
if its like eights then it can't be helped to hear some scratchy strings
>>
>>71750425
Just play the chords very staccato and switch immediately to finger the next chord rather than waiting until the proper time to change.

It won't sound good, but at least you will make the changes in time and be able to keep going and keep up with the song or metronome. Gradually as you do this your fingers will actually get used to doing the chord shapes and you'll be able to actually make the changes correctly.

What is the deal with the tuners on my telecaster, tuning up is fine, but whenever I need to lower the pitch on the B or G strings literally nothing happens for half a turn or so and then it just drops really flat. It makes it really annoying to tune, does fender just use cheap tuners or something?
>>
>>71751336
>deal with the tuners on my te
Not the tuners. It's the nut. String is binding in the nut.
>>
>>71751363
Makes sense because bending them usually pulls them out of tune. Is it just a cleaning job or nut needs to be filed or replaced or something?
>>
>>71751411
Depends, graphite type lubricant can help.
>>
>>71751411
Could be any of those. Too soft a nut material allows the string--especially wound strings-- to "dig in". Too narrow a groove may bind the string, esspecially if you're using a heavier gauge than what the guitar was set up for.

Tusq makes good replacement synthetic bone and graphite nuts. Both are harder materials than a lot of synthetic/resin stock nuts. Cost of a couple of sets of strings, give or take. Worth a shot, especially if it's a more entry-level Fender (Squier or maybe a MIM, although those are usually better). Could result in a lot more tuning accuracy and stability.

Yeah, I'd recommend painting over the old paint. Just sand it down with a fairly rough grit first. Then you can use regular rustoleum painter's touch 2x satin for the color, and whatever you like for the clear coat. There's a lot of threads online about using rustoleum rattle cans. If you want a gloss look, you'll need at least two cans of color and 2 cans of clear since there's so much sanding involved. For matte you can leave off the clear coat and just use 2 cans of color.

>>
>>71752231
No, paint just doesn't go on very smooth out of a spray can. If you're going for gloss smooth is what you want, especially on the final coat of color and final coat of clear.

But even matte, you want to sand enough to keep it from getting lumpy. However sanding more will get glossier, so you may decide not to sand the very last coat.
>>
>>71743149
I find it really helps for alternate/sweep picking, although I have small fingers so it becomes an issue for the lower strings
>>
>>71752660
I tried several compression stages...including a DOD, a Digitech, a Boss, and a BBE rack unit. The rack worked extremely well but was more complicated than necessary for guitar. Then I played an MXR MaxCom. Simple, two knobs, tailored for guitar frequency. Excellent.

For EQ, Boss 7 band is very good. I use an MXR 10 band eq and it does the trick, although more expensive.

(Really just my preference since that's what I use. Grain of salt and all that)

I sort of have both habits as well... But not really modding, just maintenance of my car. So not really wasting so much as saving money. Likewise for guitars modding saves some money, assuming I was going to buy the gear otherwise. But that's a bit of a leap right there. I probably just wouldn't have nice instruments if I didn't mod, rather than buying nice instruments outright. So I can't really claim my lutherie hobby saves me any money until I start selling my services.

existance is pain. the bottleneck is too real.

Aw c'mon, Chinese peavies aren't that bad. I mean, sure, the U.S. ones are sturdier but they're still pretty good.

restring it one string at a time starting with the thinest string and you're fine 99% of the time in my experience.

But honestly fuck floating bridges

Good set of skills to learn--working on cars. I wasted money for a long time. Ball-bearing turbos and huge intercoolers. Cams, suspension, brakes. (No body kits, though. Fuck that). A lot of it was learning how to be a mechanic, though. I didn't have anyone in my family that did automotive work so i taught myself car mechanics through modding.

The price of learning how to do something for one's self is often undervalued, so it doesn't (to me) seem worth splitting hairs over whether it was maintenance or improvement of the car. As long as you were learning something. Make sense?

No I mean the amplifier is awesome. Its a 60w 6505+ (which is precicely what i wanted), it's just the speaker/cab part of the combo thats shit.

If you run the head trough a 2x12 mesa cab you have your cookie cutter metal setup and it sounds the same as an american 6505+ 120w.

They probably saved a lot of costs on the speaker department

I'd like to add that my ritual before playing is to take my left hand, rub my ball-sack in an upward motion, bring my hand to my face, take a big whiff, and then start to play.
>>
>>71752981
I balance the guitar before I resting it. Truss rod, bridge height, spring tension, floating bridge elevation, etc. Then unstring them all and restring them all, without a care. It'll only balance out correctly or not at all, as the bridge tension and the neck tension are set up. Doesn't work if changing string gauges, but works perfectly if staying with the same strings.

As far as I can tell, most shredders don't play classical guitar. You might notice them more often because the guys who do play classical and shred tend to be the best possible guitarists from a technique stand point.
I do play classical, but I can't shred to save my life. My picking technique left me after 5 years of not using it and my forearm muscles(ones that control grip and fingers), while extremely strong from ackward stretches and barres, are not any faster really.
If anything I've gotten slower playing classical.

I wouldn't trade it for anything though. I love the classical music I play and the very heavy technique oriented style that allows music to be played on guitar that by rights shouldn't be possible.
>>
>>71753050

Oke I have a question for you then, I don't own a floyd rose guitar myself so you probably know more than I do.

When do you decide to tune the guitar using the normal tuning pegs (loosening the nut-lock first)? I've only been doing this really to 'reset' the fine tuners so I can go both ways with them again if that makes sense.
>>
>>71753124
Weird from what ive noticed they do. So many classical guitarist "shred" too meaning they play really fast classical stuff
>>
>>71753102
http://vocaroo.com/i/s0vpz88WZrJl
I keep trying to adjust the EQ but I can't seem to find a good sound
>>
>>71753157
That's pretty much it. I do like to set the bridge fine-tuners at a fairly neutral position before I do anything, then tune the guitar with the tuning pegs, lock it down, and fine tune. If it's close the fine tuners will do. If it isn't close or if you've bottomed out a fine-tuner, you unlock, retune by tuning peg, lock down, then fine tune again. Harder to describe than it is to do...

/gg/ what is in your opinion the best 'value' acoustic guitar range/brand/type?

So basically I never gig with an acoustic so it'll 95% be used outside/when im sitting on my couch. Im looking for something that is known to be reliable and sturdy, not flimsy fancy pancy.

Maybe comparable to something like what I think a Yamaha Pacifica 112 or a Fender squire/mexican Fender would be for electric guitars.

Budget is around 300-400 euros. I highly prefer smaller acoustic guitars because i'm an electric guitar player with small hands.

So anything that comes to mind after reading this?

Thanks in advance brothers.
>>
Could I just ask anyone making a youtube video about pedals to please wear shoes and socks when operating footswitches. I don't want to see your unwashed feet and ingrown toenails.

>>
>>71754538
I did not know Fender extended their business model to selling people who help knights with shit.
>>
>>71754538
Yamaha is fine at the low end. I dunno if you really need to spend 300. There's a funny thing about this: a common ideal among acoustic is plenty of high end, which mostly comes from thinner tops. So some lower end guitars are actually built sturdier. They just have a bassier sound.
>>
>>71754400
How do i see which one it needs?
>>
>>71754538
>So anything that comes to mind after reading this?

Yes. I work in "Acoustic and Jazz" and i can tell you anything between 200 and 500 is basically the same fucking think and impossible to tell in a blind test.

Below 200 the quality is shitty.
Above 500 you start getting some nice imporvement.
Between 200 and 500 its only the skin that changes and the neck depending on which brand you go with.
Sure the "Tonewood" will be different but as always ita only about what it looks like and it has little to no impact on sound.

Most of the guitars in that price range also come from the very same factory.

So basically go to thimann pick one that looks cool and pick GOOD strings (between 10€-18€) and enjoy.

Go for a dreadnought type body if you play electric.

Buy the switch first and measure how much space it needs in the housing. You'd be surprised how deep some switches are and once you add some clearance for the wires, 31mm isn't much to play with. And remember that's outside measurement, internally you may only have 25mm.

I've sampled quite a bit of some lower end guitars when I was just starting and when I played a Yamaha guitar compared to the Martin I bought I honestly felt a lot of difference. My friend who plays a Yamaha borrowed it for a performance and said he felt a world of difference too.

No, it'll be latching. Footswitches have to be one or the other, amps never work with both versions. Momentary switch inputs will have a following Schmitt trigger arrangement to electronically latch, that won't work with a latching footswitch.

That amp probably needs a latching switch. Check it with a stereo jack lead and quickly short ring to ground and tip to ground, that'll tell you if it needs latching or momentary.
