What makes metal appealing to metalheads?
serious question, not trying to bait or trigger anyone
>>
they like the way it sounds I guess

a lot of them are social outcasts and empathise with the angry lyricism also
>>
It sounds good
>>
I don't listen to metal anymore but I just to listen to it exclusively

I was always most personally drawn to the texture of the distortion over actual songwriting or complexity. If I didn't like the guitar tone I didn't like the band.

That's probably just me though because I still most listen to music for it's textures.
>>
also the community, they feel like they can fit in with these other angry and/or disenfranchised youths.
>>
Heaviness
Technicality
Atmosphere
Less conventional songwriting than other rock bands

>>
I like it because well executed metal has a raw power behind it that you can't find in many other places, the technicality can be appreciated separately from the sound and the metal themes inspire me. It also just seems to have all the surface-level things I like about classical music.
>>
I like the heaviness of the sound and some of the keys used in metal sound much darker, especially when it goes into chromaticism.
I'm not into all that blood and guts shit, or the whole dungeons and dragon shtick.
>>
really depends on the band, metal has a bunch of very different sounds

I like gojira because the heaviness of the sound makes me think about the gigantism of nature and in general things that make you feel small in comparison

I like dopethrone because the low notes and slow-ish rythm makes me feel calm, kinda like the purring of a cat, but the heavinessalso gives me energy

I like gris because their sound makes me physically cold and their lyrics are amazing (even tho you can't really understand them without reading them at the same time)

I like (well I used to like) powerwolf because they're so cheesy but also they put you in a good mood, kinda like an 80's horror/action movie that's so bad it's good

I like insomnium because their warm but dark tone makes me feel good, like when you're comfy in your house looking at the awful weather outside. It's also great backgroud music to read to

I like black sabbath because the sometimes repetitive guitars + ozzy's voice are so hypnotic and it reminds me of home, because my father used to listen to them a lot

I like Devin Townsend because he's such a genius when it comes to conveying emotions. His work is so diverse I'm only going to talk about the last album. It all feels like a dream, with the voice of devin (the voice of reason) being drowned out by the instruments. It's epic but calming and harmonic, you really feel the fact that devin is finally kinda in peace with himself but the energy that was coming from the hate is still there

I like sepultura because the brutality of their music sounds like the times when men weren't a civilised bunch in suit and ties (the "roots bloody roots" of humanity)

I like mastodon because they keep experimenting while still sounding great

I like rob zombie mainly for the same reasons as I liked powerwolf, but he sounds way more gritty while still being fun

If you don't feel anything while listening to metal, I don't blame you, different things are for different people.

one characteristic of music is that it can convey emotions. most genres of metal lean heavily on this. it's simply a matter of whether or not it resonates with you.

ultimately, those who listen to metal and ONLY metal are posers.

It's all pretty much been said already, but on top of conveying emotion or any kind of aesthetic very well, it's also a genre that revels in musical composition. There's a great capacity in metal for artists to branch out both their expression and skill.

Just listen to this one song. If you really don't like or understand why somebody else would like this, I don't know what to say. You just don't like metal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMorAdnCixg

I'm mainly into it, because it's packed with tremendous riffs (see Bolt Thrower or Darkthrone's Riffside Journey), chilling atmosphere (see almost any 2nd wave black metal band) and the growls/screams/shrieks can be quite killer, too. It speaks to me on a whole different level than most genres, but I'm not the type of faggot who only listens to metal. I'm also into various experimental genre, drone, noise, ambient, electronics and some old school rap artists.

Pic related describes my love for the genre perfectly.
>>
Heavy metal represents a brave and inquisitive spirit diving into the unknown to find meaning and beauty. It challenges dogma and stasis and rejects conformity and inaction. Its very foundations are based in horror, grim Nietzschean realism, darkness, and the occult. Instead of fearing these dark forces metal admires them a necessary aspect of a full and intense life. It de-emphasizes the individual, reminds us of death, and praises the power of the natural world.
>>
>>71614648
harsh vocals aren't going to make OP like metal, but I think the song's nice
>>
>>71614806
Harsh/distinct vocals are a pivotal aspect of metal. Not all metal, but a lot of it, and it goes hand in hand with what I stated in my post. Might as well not sugarcoat it.

I used to listen to metal excusively but i could never point a single reason why i liked the genre so much nor can i explain why it fails to keep me interested these days.
Then again, my feelings towards something are almost always bound to unpredictably change despite all my best efforts, so i have practically given up trying to control them.

1. I appreciate freedom of speech. In a society of political correctness and everyone feeling afraid to say how they feel, I find metal to be a wonderful thing. You can write about anything you want, no matter how terrible or grotesque it may be.

2. There's complete freedom to do with it as you will. There's no record companies saying "no you can't write that" or "no you can't put that on your cover" or "hey we need a hit". They're not playing metal for money or fame. If it comes they'll take it, but they're in it because they have passion for the art.

3. Instrumentation. Lyrics have never been that important to me. I mean I enjoy reading King Diamond's lyrics as I'm listening to his albums because they're entertaining stories all in one big concept album. I also enjoyed Chuck Schuldiner's lyrics. But most of the time with other bands, I don't even bother to read them. The instrumentation is the most important thing. I love the heavy brutal sound. My cousins introduced me to Metallica and Black Sabbath when I was like 5 and it was the heaviest and most incredible shit I had ever heard at the time. I'm sure my tastes in extreme metal go back to that moment.

4. It never ends. I will never get around to listening to everything I want to listen to. All the other genres I love like 80s synthpop, 90s alternative stuff, 70s funk music all died because they were for the time. Metal never dies, that's not just a corny saying. There's constantly new music coming out. It's a never-ending goldmine. You've got bands experimenting with new styles and concepts but there's also bands who worship the pure old styles of death metal and black metal. So whether you like the new experimental stuff or old stuff, there's something to enjoy and discover.

5. Aesthetic. I have a thing for dark and horror-themed imagery. Needless to say, there's plenty of that.

As someone who compliments his listening to metal with other forms of music, to me metal is the epitome of what popular music has to offer as a genre from a sheer musical perspective.

A constantly changing aesthetic aside, the two most common values of popular music that it has over other forms of music are 1. the hooks which are melodies made to be repeated a few times rather than transition the way art music or jazz does and 2. a level of visceral intensity not offered in other forms of music (as was first exemplified by the song Roll Over Beethoven by Chuck Berry.)

The metal genre, particularly in its more extreme format offers both of these put together in spades. Rather than punk music/rock n roll which just focuses on the visceral or really other forms of popular music that focus on hook melodies, metal focuses on both. It achieves this through riffs which are melodies with a heavy visceral bent achieved through lots of fast chord playing, distortion, erratic rhythm sections, etc.

In order to optimize these unique aspects of popular music, the best metal tends to have song structure akin to a sonata form which starts of seemingly sounding like a verse chorus structure but then turns into a straight up riff attack. What's interesting to notice here often is that unlike say...a lot of other typical popular music like anything on the radio or a song like King Crimson's 20th Century Schizoid Man, there's no verse section where the music "calms" down as in it doesn't play a hook and resorts to usually some kind of more static two/three chord progression. The best of the metal genre is all visceral hooks (riffs) all the time.

Metal can also deliver this in various tempos as well ranging from lower tempo stuff like Eyehategod to something midtempo like Judas Priest to something really fast like Morbid Angel.

It's a genre that can feel hard to get, but ultimately rewarding in what it does.

i used to be a stereotypical metalhead. i liked/still like some of it because:

>metal can be either stupid fast or super slow, and a lot of the more technical metal bands also have acoustic or softer songs. the variety keeps it interesting
>it seems "unrestrained" i guess, as in its not subject to the rules of what gets a pop song radio play, because metal bands KNOW theyre not getting radio play
>the sound of distorted guitar is pleasing to me, but i absolutely understand why its not to others
>its fun to try to play complex guitar parts that come with metal songs
>touches on subjects that "cleaner" genres wont, just because it can. Like a horror movie kinda
>instruments are allowed a greater range of styles as opposed to music made for people to actually listen to in public or at parties

great question. a lot of people are fans of X because it's a thing they enjoy. it is self-evident that there are many reasons why they might enjoy X. look to the fact that many people enjoy X to see that it must be appealing in some way or many different ways. other people do not like X. that's because there are many types of people in this world who like and don't like different things. Honestly metal has one thing it can do better than any other genre: show off anger and aggressiveness. Sure jazz and classical both much higher technically, and rock/electronic go much further progressively; but metal is just raw aggression. So I would imagine thats the real reason people get into metal, it is for me anyways.

This post pretty accurately describes me. I'll add that metal is so ridiculously diverse it feels like you could just explore it forever without ever getting tired of it. I listen to other stuff of course, but no other genre has as much to offer in terms of sheer variation as metal. For me it's the speed and power; the richness, depth, and sheer size of the sound touches something primal. I can be having a shit day, put on some DragonForce, Zombie, Rammstein, even Dethklok, and suddenly feel like I could bust ass for 8 hours straight. Hell, Superbeast makes me feel like I could shred steel barehanded.

I think that's what a lot of musical preference comes down to: it's whatever resonates with you.
>>
>>71612480
Depends what kind of metal
Numetal and death metal appeals to emotion
Black, speed, neoclassical appeal to music appreciation and emotional release
Thrash appeals to emotional release in the way ska or punk does
Hair metal is very similar to old rock so in a way it's nostalgic for led Zeppelin and others
All the cores are for edgy elitists
>>
>>71621872
Yeah it sometimes is
Like megadeth
Dave mustaine is a dick for fun
>>
>>71612480
Lyrics don't really matter sometimes
I lean towards neoclassical and speed more because there's no edgy swedish yelling played over amazing guitars
Jason Becker and yngwie sound like classical music with a metallic twist which is nice
Megadeth is a rush of energy and almost never fails to amaze, the songs are always upbringing and good to listen to
Metallica, even when fast, I'd more mellow and laidback to listen to
Burzum is for sad days, not edgy sad days, just average sad days
>>
>>71612480
I don't identify as a 'metalhead' per se but metal forms the bulk of what I listen to

I used to listen to metal because of teenage angst
Real heavy stupid shit like napalm death and other hardcore shit.
As I grew I realized there are so many musicians that just put their bleeding hearts into their music.
Started to listen to that for connections
Now I listen to the mellower side of stuff like porcupine tree, the dear hunter and Devin Townsend
Its like something that connects and isn't just music I suppose. Personally never been all that connected to any other genre

Metal to me was like a gateway to more noise-y experimental music that I wouldn't have listened to if I hadn't listened to metal prior

Glamour is such a beautiful word tho.

metal is basically punk rock songs in a different key.

The instrumentation is way more diverse and complex in metal

>less conventional songwriting than other rock bands
>yet most conventional songwriting compared to most other rock genres

I'm more into Post-Metal or atmospheric metal, not really a metalhead. I listen for the textures, mostly. I love that crushing, filling noise.

You do realise that metal contains a vast amount of subgenres that would be as different as classical music is to punk rock.

You should ask "why do you like x subgenre of metal" instead, in my opinion.

These are all considered metal bands, and they sound very different:
>Amorphis
>Avantasia
>Alestorm
>Gamma Ray
>Helloween
>Imperia
>Katatonia
>Korpiklaani
>Masterplan
>PAIN
>Rhapsody of Fire
>Sacred Steel
>Sentenced
>Sirenia
>Stratovarius
>Turisas

I don't call myself a metalhead, but I do love most of the subgenres of metal. I'm not particularly a fan of black/death metal that much, but sometimes it is nice when balanced with some melodic aspects.

after I started hearing other peoples voices in my head, I started listening to metal
got ddiagnosed with schizophrenia and use metal because it's louder than the voices I hear. they're gone now because of the meds I'm not but I still listen to metal because it makes me feel good and I've grown to like the sound.

Fellow Schizo bro. I'm really into Post-Rock

I hate a lot of metal but the metal that I do like, I only like for the music. Wether it be the atmosphere, the way the vocals sound, (very rarely for this genre) the production, or how unconventional the song structures are. Reading the lyrics can sometimes ruin it for me, especially when it's edgy satanic shit or angsty lyrics.

It depends on the style. Sometimes the riffs (classic heavy metal), sometimes the energy (thrash), sometimes the atmosphere (prog, black), sometimes it's beautiful and even romantic (folk, pagan) etc
