So my friend is buying his first guitar and amp and since he doesn't really know much he's asked me for advice, we've found a guitar he likes but he can't really decide what amp he should go for. he doesn't want to spend too much money, about 250 euro for the amp alone, so I found 2 amps that should be great for him, one is the marshall code 25 and the other is the boss katana 50, I'll briefly go over the pros and cons, both are digital modeling amps and priced around about the same
>Marshall pros
has a dedicated footswitch (sold seperately though)
has more modelling options
>cons
in the event he gets in a band he'll never be loud enough for a drummer, so he'll have to buy a cab or a completely new amp
>Boss pros
>ever so slightly cheaper
>louder, will keep up with a drummer no problem
>cons
only compatible footswitch is some garbage with just one button
he seems to be leaning towards the marshall and I do think that's the better choice for a begginer amp, but I'm open to second opinions
>>
how do i meet people who like the same things i like to jam with. i just moved to san fernando valley in northridge and all my jamming friends back home at 450 miles away also im not good
>>
>>71598604
the marshall needs to be upgraded to even sound like a decent bedroom amp. the stock speaker is so unbelievably shit it's sad. Out of those two, the Boss easily.

Although if I had to buy any amp like that, it's Yamaha THR or nothing
>>
>>71598609
there are apps for that man, or try /soc/. alternatively, if you somehow are a normie on 4chan, you could try attending open mic nights, teaching a new friend you make here, or posting a "please don't rape/rob me" ad on craigslist
>>
>>71598604
1) if he's beginner he won't need all the bells and whistles. 2) It'll take a bit before he can jam with anyone anyways. IMO either one will be okay, taking in both those considerations.
>>
>>71598604
Fender Mustangs are solid modeling amps as well
>>
>>71598609
>>71598657
My question is, when is someone skilled enough to be ready to jam? I'd love to but I've only been playing since November so I fear no one would want to practice with someone who's garbage.
>>
"See Samuel Campos playing live with his band"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV7OIs-4i6c

Audience didnt like this song as much but he did two cool solos on it, quoting "dazed and confused" a bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLJOYgo584c

Fun fact.
Later that night he was at a hospital due to alcohol overdose after drinking all the doubles avaliable that night
>>
>>71598609
mfw you're close enough to me where i easily could jam but i won't because lol @ meeting up w/ people on line
>>
>>71598604
>>71598634
read a few reviews and none of them mentioned that the speaker is shit so don't know where you got that from, unless you actually own one
>>71598662
I know he doesn't need all the fancy effects and shit, but it's nice to have once he really gets into it, no use buying a crappy amp for 100euros and tossing it in the trash after a few months to buy something he should've bought in the first place (I did that)
the odds of him even jamming with anyone besides me, let alone a full band is slim but still something to consider
>>71598697
we took the Mustang II V2 into consideration aswell but he said he liked the other two more
>>
>>71598858
>euros
dropped
>>
>>71598858
I did own one for about a week. I put an Eminence in it and it sounded way better, but I didn't buy a practice amp to mod. The Yamaha still sounds better than both though, which is why I ditched the marshall

If I play metal would a fender strat be a bad choice?

It works for iron maiden...
>>
>>71600053
They use single coil sized humbuckers. Yngwie plays a strat with single coils and makes it sound pretty metal, so there's that.
>>
anon with the lpj, can you please post it? im thinking of getting a cheap epi like yours and modding it. its so incredibly aesthetic with that emg in there. my one complaint is the bolt on neck. do you think an emg would do swedish death metal like entombed?
>>71600053
yeah buddy. what type of metal in particular? bridge singles sound great for black metal and some other swedish death metal band uses a neck single coil into an hm-2 into a jcm800. also, jon levasseur of cryptopsy uses a fat strat. so yeah, it should do it.

What's the best way to make my attack quieter? I'm trying to record some quiet post rock stuff, and whenever I play lightly the strumming sound totally drowns out the actual notes. When I turn the volume up more it gets to the point where it's no longer quiet, which defeats the purpose. I also sometimes try to do harmonic or muted strumming for a percussive effect (think early U2) and it's extremely loud compared to the rest of what I'm playing.

I imagine a compressor would help but I'd prefer not to have to drop a hunnit on one.

I always laugh when I see some dumb shit buy a cheap guitar and immediately start "upgrading" it. They usually start by asking for replacement pickup suggestions. It's like why, you dumb fuck? Why did you buy a guitar you didn't think sounded good to begin with? I'll tell you why: because you don't know what the fuck you're doing and you have no clue what the fuck you're after. You bought some retarded piece of shit because of how it looked in a picture on the internet and then when you got it home and actually played it ..it sounded and played like straight up ass. So you started "upgrading" it instead of admitting to yourself that you don't know shit and made a mistake, or that the guitars construction was so shitty that you didn't have any other choice but to "upgrade" it to make it a playable instrument. Here's the thing though: you could have just saved all the time and money you sank/wasted into "upgrading" a piece of shit and just bought a decent guitar to begin with. You bedroom warriors are a hilarious lot, watching you flail about trying to polish turds into diamonds. If a diamond is what you wanted why didn't you just go out and buy a diamond to begin with?

Because you're fucking stupid, that's why.

What's the advantage of these over the Professional? The circuit is a minus for me. I don't really want the rollers and shit. I have that on one of my basses and it's just annoying and I never use it. One of the reasons why I'm looking at the professional.

Unless the necks are way nicer or something, I'm still leaning towards the pro.

Yeah the intonation seems like it'd be a problem but it isn't, at least on my Jazzmaster.

I think the benefits of the AVRIs are the nitro finishes and bound necks/witch hat knobs on the 65s. I never use the rhythm circuit but it's true bypassed so if you never touch it it doesn't affect anything. Plus the colors are different so that's something to consider.

I always laugh when I see some dumb 19 year old buying a guitar. It's like why, you dumb fuck? Why waste your time and money? You don't know guitar based music is deader than horse shit? What the fuck do you think's going to happen? Why do you think everybody in their late 20s and early 30s stops playing in bands? Go take a look at the lineups of all the popular music festivals these days. What's the average age of most of those bands? Why do you think that is? I'll tell you why: because being poor as shit is only fun when you're a stupid ass kid. Just as soon as your peer group moves on to adult pursuits you look fucking retarded playing the "cool kid who plays in a band". Trust me, when all your family and friends have stable jobs, kids, and nice houses your "artistic poverty" playing shitshows out of an old dilapidated rust covered van won't measure up anymore. It's like.. think about what your doing, you dumb little shit. What are you trying to achieve? Do you really think you'll be one of the lucky few who'll wins the lottery and has a successful career in music? I mean, really? Do you really think you're talented and smart enough to succeed in the music industry? Are you fucking stupid?

And don't give me all that "I do it for myself" bullshit either. lol, no fuck you don't. You're doing it in the hopes that one day it'll garner you some peer recognition, you're hoping it'll help you climb up socially one day. You do it because you're a fucking loser who wants to desperately escape the societal pecking order you feel has marginalized you. Name a famous guitarist who started off wealthy. Oh, you can't? That's who you think you are, loser. You want that same success and you know it. Only problem with your plan is noone cares because guitar music doesn't matter anymore

Go to school, get a real job, and stop wasting your time trying to score "cool points" with other impressionable moron kids like you. You ain't gonna make it, you fucking idiot

Get a fucking clue

Hey guys, I'm a bass player trying to upgrade to a new amp. I've been playing for around 2 years. This is the current one that I have, not that special

https://www.kustom.com/index.php/bass-amps/kxb10.html

Looking for something medium sized, something louder. I always find myself getting drowned out from a full band (vocals, 2 guitars and drums)

Budget is around $400.

Mixolydian sounds pretty cool if you play it over a minor 7 chord. The major third brings a bright outside-sounding note to your licks while the flat seventh keeps your phrasing closer to the minor sound of the chord. Greg Howe does this a lot.

hey guys, ive been using fender super bullets on a fender jag making shoegaze and tremelo strumming, my hi-e string just broke for the first time after like 1 1/2 months, is there anything else i can do to avoid string popping when tremelo strumming? the bullets were really nice, my strings would only slightly detune up after tremelo use (at least i think so unless bends and hard strumming impact it as well)

thanks f am

If your songs are based on simple chord progressions and strumming patterns then I wouldn't worry at all about variance or originality
>>
>>71600665
Low tunings, invert chords, make tritones. Make as much dissonance as possible, but arpeggiate the strings instead of strumming it all at once. Look at the intro to Black Sabbath, that will teach you the importance of tritones.
>>
>>71606772
That seems meaner that it had to be.
>>
>>71606772
They're not that simple really. I just strum/arpeggiate in similar ways every time.

Lowest note, strum, arpeggiate from the highest note back down to the lowest. Or if I strum it's always down down up up down.

It just feels and sounds so right.

I had a 2 pickup version of that for years. Was a great guitar, wonder where it is now

what are your guys opinions on roller nuts? i asked once before and they dont seem to be very popular. do they suck out tone compared to bone ?
>>
>>71609550
no but you suck since you believe pseudo-science that guitar companies put out to scare you into buying their "superior" materials
>>
>>71600974
It means what it says. So its probably made overseas.
>>
>>71609550
I roll deez nuts across your mum's face and she sucks out my tone

Peavey has lost their mind.
>>
>>71609578
well i have a guitar with a roller nut. i have no bone nut to compare it to and the internet doesnt offer me a lot of information on the topic. thanks for making assumptions about what i believe i guess thats what i asked for.

First gig with my new AC15 last night, holy shit these things are killer. What a revelation after my Blackstar HT40, they really sing when you crank them. Bloody loud too
>>
Well, didn't Yngwie use single coils in the 80s? Or did he always use buckers? Is there any metal act that uses single coil pickups?

how much does it cost to paint a guitar?
saw an ibanez jet king 3 on reverb but its fucking bright orange
>>
>>71609874
You can do it yourself if you have some space to paint (you can do it outside too) and you're not a retard. Should cost about $50 in materials, maybe less.

Paying someone to do it will be around $200.
>>
>>71609660
You should've gotten a buffered bypass mum. True bypass mums are overrated.

but i literally have no idea about the electronics and shit and the ibanez costs $220 and im afraid i might ruin the guitar
>>
>>71609668
Looks good desu. Just curious is that a thunderverb? Or is the th a whole other animal?
>>
>>71609550
I just got my first guitar with a bone nut. If theres a difference its very subtle. Don't worry what people say or think man, if it feels good and sounds better keep it and love it tenderly erry night.
>>
>>71610149
On that guitar it looks like you only have to unsolder the pickups from the pots. Everything else will come out as one piece. Easy but that's just more stuff you need to buy and learn to use.

Is a useful skill to have though.

Can anyone recommend a short riff or scale that is fun to play but doesn't require much concentration? I need some musical chewing gum to play between thoughts.

I like to bend my neck on my guitar to do like an opposite whammy-type sound (it gets sharper), however on my primary guitar (which is an old Crate) when I do this there is a creaking sound. How do I make sure that nothing breaks or get worse? No fucking way that I'm just going to not do this, but I don't want to eventually damage my guitar. Can this be fixed?
>>
I remember seeing orange amps get shit on here.

What reason is there to not buy this?

I'm on neetbux. I can only afford an epiphone les paul or a low end ibanez. What should I get? I want to play hard rock, metal and post-punk.
>>
>>71611283
That's a good practice amp
>>
Just bought a ukulele to mess around on.
It's pretty fun and really easy.
Who else plays one?
>>
>>71611283
I own an Orange CR120 and it's great. It's not a tube amp but who really cares? I'm not some gigging musician, I play covers in my bedroom and occasionally jam with friends. So it does everything I need

I am desperately trying to convince my wife to let me spend $30 on a used one. My last trip to the guitar shop I just goofed around on one for an hour. I'm sure if I bought it it would sit in the closet though.

How about using a floating trem instead?
>>
>>71611834
I know jack shit about guitar even though I've played most of my life, can you tell me what that is?
>>
>>71611997
It's a tremolo arm that you can not only push down to lower the pitch of the strings, but pull up on to raise the pitch.

Common floating tremolos are the Floyd Rose, Ibanez Edge, and Kahler.

I think a standard tremolo system can also be adjusted to have a little upward pitch bending leeway as well.
