Decided to learn to play the violin
Does anyone have any recommended beginner's media?
Take some lessons. Violin is a lot harder to pick up than a guitar.

I say this as a guy who played violin for 5 years.

Have anything good for the broke autodidact learner?

Put down some tapes so you know where to place your fingers.

>Suzuki, Obviously.
The Suzuki books have a good selection of music and are widely used, but I wouldn't recommend anyone actually follow the Suzuki method.

I watched some videos and picked up the 'Franco-Belgian bow hold' if that's anything good

That's one of the world's most common bow holds. You should be fine.
When I first started violin I learned some sort of modified bow grip, I think the idea was to build up dexterity and strength in the fingers before switching to a normal hold. I think the idea was to build up some finger strength (I was 10 at the time) before moving to a normal hold.
First, kill your family for not making you start when you were 3 years old.
Then listen to and watch Jascha Heifetz. He started at 3 years old.
Then kill yourself because you'll never get anywhere now and you might as well see if you can be reincarnated into a 3 year old with more sense.
