Their debut became an instant classic, released some subsequent good material even tho their decline became already obvious with their second album.

IMO, the reason their first album was so good was because of the explosive youthful energy and clever lyrics about life as a 20-something in Britain, which were oddly relatable despite not even being from there. Gradually their sound "matured", i.e. got more boring, and now they've traded that explosive, adolescent sound for something more tame and streamlined. I get that you can't pretend to still be teen preccupied with all the shit that comes with it when you're approaching and hitting your 30s, but Arctic Monkeys sure lost something along the way when their sound started to "mature".
