>tfw you will never hear this for the first time in 1970
*death bell chimes*
My dad told me about hearing this for the first time in 1970 and how even just the cover scared the shit out of people.

I can only imagine. As a nervous guy, I can safely say this album would have fucked me up in 1970.

there also was a huge inverted cross inside the booklet, and it was the year 1970, man

it was a poem
Honestly, for all the praise they get, I still would consider Black Sabbath an underrated band.

This. Really hard to overstate how good they were. Also how ahead of their time they were.
OH NOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOH
OIOOOOOOH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Agree completely. Iommi was a genius.

I feel like people forget that this sound didn't always exist...like people love sabbath but sorta take it for granted

You're right. One of my musical hobbies is looking for "metal" that existed in the 60s before Black Sabbath. A couple of bands produced definite examples of what metal would come to be (easy example being Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused). However, I haven't found anybody that put a face on the genre like Sabbath did. Blue Cheer kinda did in 1968 but it was't nearly as evil and doomed as Black Sabbath.
A doomier example of pre-70s metal would be 21st Century Schizoid Man. Talk about a heavy track.

I'd like to hear anything you've dug up
>>71484377
second this, I love under appreciated albums that predate the "creation" of a genre

a couple of them are widely known like pic related
and then there's this:

quick note, i haven't really found any entire albums that I would call metal before 1970 except perhaps Vincebus Eruptum by Blue Cheer.
Also, some of this shit Coltrane does on Ascension is very metal. I'm not totally well versed in jazz but I bet there are a decent amount of jazz tracks out there with speed, aggression, and perhaps even doom/despair as their prominent elements.

>Dazed and Confused
I first listened to this in complete darkness in our basement and I was fucking creeped out. I suggest you guys try doing this.
