(reposting because pig reviews are rare these days)

sky 空 - final day 千秋楽
Decent, floaty ambient that rides the same cloud the entire album. Hard to criticize it for something that was clearly their goal, but it's so ambient you might forget it's playing.
Good for studying though.

6.5/10

Max Corbacho - Ars Lucis
Great ambient album. Gives the feeling of walking through a cave big enough that it would take a lifetime to reach the other side. Tracks are interesting enough to lay back and listen to, but dreamy enough to float by in the background. The volume occasionally rides i and out at seemingly uneventful moments which is a little distracting and unnecessary, but this is overall a great ambient release.

7.0 /10

(Side note: I'm making a 'study music' rym playlist that I'm building upon, not sure if/when I'll publish it but lemme know if i should or if you have recs. Might wait until I reach 100 or so, or post it near exam time.)

Cadu Tenório - Vozes (2014)
>Ambient, Vaporwave

There’s some interesting concepts and good use of looping and atmosphere, but the end result is pretty mediocre. A little too reliant on individual sounds, rather than making them interact in a worthwhile way. A worthwhile listen, but not one I’ll be returning to soon.

Giant Claw - Midnight Murder

The musical equivalent of a kid with ADHD; bouncing from one thing to another, no regard for the past and no plan for the future. One simple 3-5 note loop gets replaced by the next, new layers are added and removed ad nauseum, and then it’s over. There’s some cool themes, and they all last about 20 seconds until they’re flushed down the toilet from the new bloops being added. No real regard for structure or theme, just 40 minutes of sounds.
Passively pleasant at it’s best, and grating at it’s worst.

quick reviews before i throw up and go to bed early

>The Savage Young Taterbug - Marlboro Man
He has a cool sound but the songs ain't great. 3/5

>Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul
Great voice, great bluesy guitar and great arrangements. People Get Ready cover isn't different enough or as good as the original though. 4/5

>John Coltrane featuring Pharoah Sanders - Live in Seattle
Just picked this because I needed a live album and some Coltrane and Sanders sounded good but I'm pretty disappointed. It's not spiritual at all, it's a free skronk fest and while the solos are obviously good in parts it's also a bit of a rambling mess. 3-/5

>Otis Redding - The Immortal Otis Redding
Sounds a pretty unfinished in parts (how suprising!), the sound isn't quite as full as his other records but Redding's talent still easily shines through on tracks like Happy Song. 3.5+/5

It was nice hearing a very serious sounding Residents release. I loved the concept of this album, and the dark and story-based tracks were great (although none really stuck out to me). I've heard better from the Residents but I've also definitely heard worse.

Ramones - Leave Home (1977)
>punk rock

I still, without fail, get the most intense nostalgia every time I listen to a Ramones song. That sounds really dumb, considering how young I am, but these guys were /the/ band that got me into music, and the Ramones' best-of compilation was pretty much the only thing I listened to when I was in early elementary school. So some songs here, "Pinhead" and "California Sun", especially, are just so linked with my younger childhood that I love every second of them. Taking off my rose-tinted glasses, however, this is much weaker than their first album. It's significantly poppier (which is saying a lot) and the only true pop song that really works is "Oh Oh I Love Her So", the rest of them seem comparatively weak and unengaging compared to the mixtures of bubblegum pop and assaulting power chords on their debut. The basic components that make Ramones great are still here in spades, Joey's perfect vocals, especially, but save for a few absolute mint tracks it's a weaker follow-up to their monolith of a debut.

Mandingo - The Primeval Rhythm of Life (1973)
>jazz-funk, jazz-rock

Solid album of jazzy rare grooves. The tracks with a very heavy emphasis on percussion are really incredible, and they truly represent "The Primeval Rhythm of Life". They're hypnotic, rough around the edges, and a damn blast to listen to. The jazz orchestra tracks, on the other hand, aren't that great. One look at Geoff Love (Mandingo)'s work in easy listening arrangements of pop tracks certainly explains why these tracks have such a base in cheesy, substanceless exotica and lounge, but they're still not great to listen to and they fit in really poorly with the earth-shattering percussive tracks. Still, those percussion grooves make this worth a listen alone.

Mark And recs:

戸張大輔 - ギター (Guitar) (1999)
>avant-folk

Super eclectic album, consisting of a lot of bite-sized vignettes of avant-folk goodness. Sequencing like this, especially when there's no real cohesion between the tracks, definitely lends itself well to some filler tracks that can't stand up to the rest of the album, but the bulk of this is great stuff. The vocals are especially eclectic, they switch between styles perfectly: more delicate on the softer tracks, harsher and growlier on the more experimental tracks, and loud and brash on the more energetic tracks. The music itself also switches between styles well, but I find myself coming back to the softer, more delicate tracks, they are absolutely beautiful. Not perfect, mainly lying in how the album is put together, but it blends three styles together well without sacrificing any individual qualities, so for that I really like it.

3.0+

Mark And moves on!

Jangle recs:

Lino "Capra" Vaccina - Antico adagio (1978)
>minimalism

Proggy minimalism. Like an RYM review says, some of this is a lot like deconstructed avant-prog, but I really don't care for the moments that fall very distinctly under this description. Deconstructed avant-prog sounds really cool, but a lot of what makes good avant-prog good (and good prog good, as a whole) is how full-sounding it is, taking out elements makes the pieces suffer, and the vocal segments here certainly aren't doing much to improve my enjoyment. The percussion is definitely great, though, and the calmer, piano-based pieces are extraordinary. Especially that title track, what a great track.

3.0

Goodbye, Babylon was fucking incredible. My only complaint is that much of these songs aren't really as obscure as some seem to claim. Plenty of these are well-respected recordings which are now standards of the genre. I would say my least favorite section would have to be the vocal Spirituals filling up the last disc, but occasionally gave birth to a lot of loud, vibrant, and emotional sections which were extremely satisfying. Though there is themeing throughout each disc, the bulk of this is deserve enough to make 7+ hour trek one very worth traveling.

It boils down what makes its influences so satisfying to its purest form. It's quite an enchanting experience. The best Dust-To-Digital comp I've heard thusfar. Would rec to absolutely everyone.

Next I'm doing Lysol, 100 Flowers and 0% (I'd already done 0 and enjoyed it thoroughly, but put that one on the chart at first by mistake. As I understand this is a live performance of most of the songs from there).

What should I hear after that?

Busy last few days so I haven’t gotten much further on this chart. Saw Moonlight with the GF last night though and thought it lived up to the hype. I'm definitely gonna be thinking about that movie for a while.

Anyway, some quick reviews.

Claudio Abbado - Pictures at an Exhibition

I don’t know shit about classical or how to write about it but this was dope. The best tracks on here were the ones with a choir, which elevated this into something powerful. They had a real regal, triumphant feel in a way and it reminded me oddly of Popol Vuh. I should really learn more about classical music. Great stuff.

4/5

The Kinks - Face to Face

I don’t really remember being too impressed with Village Green but this is awesome. Nice psychedelic pop that reminds me a lot of early Beatles songs. The tracks are mostly lighthearted, with that pop rock kind of flair, but they’re all entertaining. Maybe it’s because I haven’t heard something in this style in a while but I loved this.

4/5

Mission of Burma - Vs

I’m not typically too into post-punk but this is at a nice intersection of indie rock and punk. It reminds me a lot of early Unwound, with some post-hardcore influence and noisy guitar work. This really doesn’t have a bad track on it imo, it’s ridiculously consistent.

4.5/5

The Pillows - Runners High

Nice comfy, jangly pop. A bit inconsistent but songs like “Juliet”, “Paper Triangle” and the title track were all awesome and enough to make this pretty enjoyable.

3/5

Wilco - Being There

First disc was amazing, exactly what I wanted out of Wilco. Perfectly melancholy alt-country/indie rock tracks. The second was packed with samey filler but as a whole it’s still a great listen.

>Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

I'm really really picky with my oldschool hip-hop, and I didn't like this. I feel like it was pretty cheesy a lot of the times. It wasn't absolutely terrible though, and there were a lot of times I enjoyed the beats and turntable shit they did. But other then that, this wasn't really enjoyable; the rapping wasn't nice to listen to. Was funny to hear the "Bass!" and the "yeeeeeeeee boiiiiiiiiiii", even though it got old after the 50th time or so.

They do something like folk-pop waltz and melodic stuff.
They have a song named something something waltz that haves some lines that go like "my love, my something" "the other side of the moooon"

This was more very interesting and unique then it was straight up enjoyable. I haven't really heard anything like it; however it wasn't like something I'd listen to for enjoyment or for banger tracks. However, this thing ended on suuuuuuuch a strong note. The last 3 tracks were amazing. The bass was awesome in "
data.vortex", "data.matrix" was just straight up god tier. Was struggling between a 3.5 and a 4 on this one, think I'm settling for a 3.5 though due to the album leading up to the end (which definitely wasn't bad, but it got old to me after a while).

Ramones - Rocket to Russia (1977)
>punk rock

Comes much closer to their debut than Leave Home, but still bogged down my some less than stellar songs. There are some absolute classics like "Cretin Hop", "Rockaway Beach", "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker", and the wonderful cover of "Do You Wanna Dance?", but there are still some overly schmaltzy pop songs here and there, and the fact that these guys only had one real song gets very apparent here, especially in "I Wanna Be Well"'s shameless aping of "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend". Still, it's got all those great Ramones characteristics, and it's the only punk record I've heard with sleigh bells, so that's a big plus.

2.5+

MC5 - Back in the USA (1970)
>hard rock, garage rock, proto-punk, rock & roll

In his What's in My Bag video, Jay Reatard called this the thinnest sounding rock & roll record, and I'm inclined to agree. Any power this record could have is diminished by the fact that the production is absolutely terrible. The guitar sounds scratchy and weak, the drums sounds like tin cans, and the vocals are mixed poorly. It's a decently fun rock & roll album at it's core, but pretty darn generic and just not really worth anything at all.

Good Morning /daily/!

Woke up at 4:30 today. That's something new.

Gonna listen to something cool now.

Dennis Alcapone - King of the Track (1974)
>deejay

Alcapone is definitely a good deejay and producer, but his singing and songwriting skills leave a decent bit to be desired. The tracks themself often fall into typical reggae territory, still cool and pleasant but uninspired and bland. The production and sound manipulation is the real highlight. It takes a very dub-like approach to deejay, with lots of psychedelic effects and a nicely heavy bass. Solid album.

>Sukiyaki
The only Japanese single to top the US charts. It's an all around solid song, if not a bit unassuming. The B-side is pretty good as well, featuring some tastefully playful vocals

>Fancy
It's thematic as hell, and there is some fantastic musicianship to be found here, but that's the extent of my praise for this album. It tries to hard to be quirky and un-predictable, and the vocal performances are laughably cheesy (even when it's trying to be satirical).

>>

>>
>>71437727
i'm just saying sounding "of its time" (like any hip hop older than 5-6 years now i guess) doesn't make an album bad, only makes you think it's cheesy because you know that type of sound more in the form of references to that time cuz you weren't there, but that's not hard to get over
there's other kinds of dated i guess, being made with old-ish technology and falling victim to the "seinfeld is unfunny" tvtropes page
>well it was good for that time
sounds like you're referring to the tech aspect tho, i mean i get it when you're talking about stuff like Acid Trax or Minimal Nation
but c'mon those old drum machines sound dank and Terminator X is creative af
>>

Yeah it is a pretty dated album but I think I enjoy it more because of that. Something about the production works really well and I usually hate that style
>>

I would say that minus a small sum of very creative and unique albums, I find myself enjoying plenty hip-hop albums less as they age.

Nation of Millions would have to be one of the few (if not only) 80s-era hip-hop albums I find myself enjoying so of course I disagree with Zane here, but it's pretty hard to say hip-hop doesn't age like milk. I predict this whole trap thing has about 5 years left.

>Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
built on repetitive phrases that just build and build into something absolutely gorgeous at times. i actually like how far back the vocals are in the mix, makes me think of thoughts being drowned out by emotions.
favorite tracks: randy described eternity, velvet waltz, untrustable / part 2 about someone else
7/10 i like this +

>The Don Ellis Orchestra - Electric Bath
when it's energetic, it's electrifyingly so. i just don't like it when it gets slow and subdued.
favorite tracks: indian lady, alone, turkish bath

>>71438350
No I'm sure it could definitely do more creatively. My worry is that it'll be dated before much of that creative stuff makes it to the mainstream. I really think a lot of modern rappers are doing interesting things, but most of it is bogged down in what will soon be dated production style and copycatism.

>>71438358
>why's that even happening tho
are you asking why my opinions on older hip-hop change as time goes on generally, or why hip-hop ages like milk? If the latter, my guess is it would be because the genre has always had a large focus on legitimacy through being modern and adaptive, kind of forcing a culture that is constantly "out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new".

but I'm also an upper-class white guy so take my outsider perspective on African-American-rooted culture with a grain of salt.

that'd explain why the aging process happens at the rate it does, but not why you come to like the old stuff less, unless i'd make the assumption that the only reason you enjoyed each current wave in the first place is just because it's trendy :^)

>As much as I shit on Liturgy and their fanbase I'm really rooting for Triple H. to do something that I enjoy.
he's more just an example for the kinda people who would be willing to think far outside the box (or outside the trap) but yeah he's mostly been experimenting and developing his lore for a while now, i just want some fresh tunes tho
>>

>unless i'd make the assumption that the only reason you enjoyed each current wave in the first place is just because it's trendy
I don't though. There are less than a handful of popular trap songs I like and believe me I hear a lot. My roomie is either blasting that or really bad indie emo.

And I guess what you would define we define as "old" is worth bringing up. The 90s-era memphis rap is pretty damn old, but that's probably the subgenre of hip-hop I find myself listening to more often. That or 00's-era hipster-hop, which I think plenty people think sounds "old" for sure. I would argue any hip-hop album that makes an attempt at being lyrical in any sense would be seen as dated by most people.

>Various Artists - Goodbye, Babylon
Already reviewed once but it's just that good that I needed to talk about it again. Please listen to this.
9

>Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú
Really incredible. The suites don't fit all together cohesively, but as individual bits they're pretty inseparable and enjoyable. Seriously, this is the kind of unique shit I really can't see anyone here thinking lowly of.
8 (fuck you jangle ;))

>青葉市子 - 0%
Live performances from 0, an album I really enjoy more now for its subtle beauty and creative minimal guitar-style that at times can be occasionally lush. The same can be found here, but the opening track, "Airplane" is probably her masterpiece. It's fucking stunning. In contrast, the 2nd-to-last 20-minute track has an unfortunate 10 minutes of really uninteresting spacious field recordings. The meat of the song is incredible, but there feels like a lot of unnecessary moments sprinkled throughout that don't really enhance my enjoyment of it. Not sure if the performances here are "better" than 0 but the additional tracks definitely make it worth a listen if you enjoyed that album.
7

>Steven R. Smith - Kohl
"Tent-Pegging" was fucking incredible, but only a few times does the album reach similar highs. It's not super special for someone that's heard a lot of psych folk influenced by eastern traditions, but I really enjoyed the spaciousness and subtle drone material. Lots of layers to dissect for what's essentially not very much at all.
7

>Darren Keen - It's Never Too Late to Say You're Welcome
Really decent, and probably the only Footwork I've ever actually enjoyed this much. Still, it's not my kinda thing, but a lot more flavor and unique song texture than I usually find from this scene. Very worth checking out if you're a /bleep/-bro.

>Graham Lambkin - Salmon Run
A cool little sound collage experiment, but not much more than that: an experiment. If your idea of a good album is a nice little world to live in for just under an hour, I would highly rec you give this a shot.
6

>Melvins - Lysol
It's near-decent. Has a lot of interesting riffage, but this sort of thing has been outdone by the likes of Kyuss and similar later stoner-rock bands. Has alright punchiness and atmosphere, but bands like Boris and Sleep outdo them in those areas as well. I guess I could name-drop similar bands I enjoy more forever like a fucking poseur, but I guess the ultimate point here is that I feel this format has been beaten time and time again. Granted, none of them probably would've existed without these guys (Boris literally named themselves after a song on Bullhead), so mad props to them, but these guys have been outclassed in most areas. It's their best album for sure, but still nothing special.
5

>100 Flowers - s/t
some of the most drab and useless music I've heard from this genre I love. I can't see many people hating this but I really don't know who could love this. It's like an ugly child.
5

>The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World
The thing that makes these guys the worst band in the world isn't the fact that they made bad music (it's not that bad though!), it's for the crime of bringing the sin of twee into this world. These songs sound like they were written by their mom, and if you've ever played drums this is a must, as the drumming here is hilarious. Not incredibly bad like everyone claims, and disjointed enough to be as interesting as others claim.

>The Smiths - The Peel Sessions
Idk why I keep expecting so much from these Peel Sessions. Three of these guys' best songs and a bad song all recorded worse with more reverb oh boy can't wait.
4

>Whitehouse - Bird Seed
I feel like this record is holding itself entirely on edginess and shock value. Really was hoping for more tracks like "Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel" which were damn incredible. Instead I was treated to a 14-minute poor-man's Buyer's Market, and some sub-par pseudo-dark music that was done better two decades ago. What a shame because that fuckin' Wriggle track really got me excited.

Mandoinger - The Primeval Rhythm of Life
>Jazz-funk, Jazz-rock
This sounds like an Italian film soundtrack, despite the band not being from Italy or the fact that this isn't soundtrack at all. But it hits every early seventies orchestral jazz-funk Italian sound track note. It's got that cheesy dated quality to it that is both endearing, but also limits it from being anything truly remarkable. Besides some above average drumming and some African rhythms, it doesn't have much to distinguish itself from the dollar bin competition. This is definitely a loop album, meaning that it's filled to the brim with delicious little loops that, if taken out of context and properly manipulated, could be transformed into much better music. I loved listening for all the possible loops and samples that could be extracted from this, got me all excited to get creating. However, loops do not make an album, so unfortunately this record just kind of sits at "alright" for me.

Kairon; IRSE! - Ruination (2017)
>space rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock

I might like this more that Ujubasajuba, but I'm still not a big fan of either. Ujubasajuba is just a pretty typical shoegaze album with some Sigur Ros vocal stylings, but this is a psych/prog album with Sigur Ros vocal stylings, so naturally I'd like it more. The guitar work is phenomenal, I love when it gets much more psychedelic and heavier, and the spaciness of it all is just really nice. On the opposite side of the coin, the vocals are very ill-fitting, they can't strike a decent chord between their take on psych and their take on vintage prog, and some of the longer songs repeat the same themes and riffs ad nauseum until they lose any originality and catchiness they once had. I do still like it more than the shoegaze of Ujubasajuba, and it's still a cool throwback record.
