I say make the music you'd like to hear, and whenever you come up against a wall, ask google (and ask google in general for things cause you never know what nuggets you might find). I don't think in terms of music theory, just what comes next, what goes here, what goes there, but I did learn the major minor modes and pentatonic things from a young age so I'm heavily biased. Plus, if you feel compelled, how can you not make it? Isn't it already in your head somewhat?
