In Utero was the peak. After this it slowly but surely went downhill. I'm not saying Jar of flies or Superunknown were bad because they weren't... but In Utero was the peak of grunge in just about any way you look at it.

Not album sales (that goes to Nevermind), and certainly not songwriting quality (that goes to Jar Of Flies.) Jar Of Flies is the masterwork of grunge, everything is just sounded like watered down stoner/sludge or watered down punk while AiC here created this weird heavy monster of an acoustic record.
