Over writing is the biggest sin a guitarist can make. I say this as someone who has played guitar and bass for 10 years.

Writing a good, simple, catchy riff is far more important than playing leads. Nobody remembers a lead or overdone solo.

The riff has to be strong enough to carry the motherfucking song, and simpler is usually better.
