Rubber Soul and Revolver are both fantastic albums, but I don't understand why '''''critics''''' act like the two are "twin" albums. They don't really sound alike

Because George Harrison said they were
They're the transition period. They aren't Beatlemania touring period, and they are before the Sgt Pepper transformation. They sit in that gap between the two and as a result have the best of both worlds. They both have the short pop songs structure of the album's which came before them, but start to show a few signs of the experimentation which will follow, with songs like Norwegian Wood, She Said She Said, Tomorrow Never Knows, etc.
Neither does Pet Sounds and Smile but people think those albums are also book ends.

While it's true that The Beatles didn't perform one song off of Revolver during their last international tour in 1966 they did perform songs off of Rubber Soul.
