The band was sued because Damaged was not family friendly. Big Chuck of time missing because they could not legally record music. In that time, their style changed. Plus a zero fucks attitude at the the world. Look for the demos from that time.

On one hand, I think Black Flag's lyrics are pretty cringey, they sound like they were written by a 14 year old. On the other hand, this and Damaged (I haven't gotten around to listening to their other albums) are good. Damaged is classic hardcore punk, and My War is interesting because it's more than hardcore punk. It's more melodic, has solos, has self-loathing lyrics, and other things I can't think about right now. Everyone talks about how the album's B-side slowness, metal influences and self-hatred makes the album a precursor to sludge metal/grunge, and I agree with that. However, I also think that its evolution from somewhat formulaic hardcore punk (in both musical and lyrical ways) makes this album an important album in the early history of post-hardcore as well.

I remember an interview in years ago Flipside with Eugene Robinson of Whipping Boy (now in Oxbow) in which generic hardcore was being discussed and in his exact words " Black Flag is the only band that took a balls out leap into something different"

This one is great but Live 84 is way more intense (by Flag standards). The version of "Sinking" on this release is probably the greatest unsung Blues rock song of the 80s.

My War is literally if you just took Depression and What I see and made a whole album of it. I like both albums a whole lot but I just dont get how you can think that they have cringey lyrics and then act as if the lyrics on My War are deeper or something.
