Vaporwave is only viewed as an illegitimate genre because anything that gains prominence via the Internet is considered as nothing more than a petty 'meme' nowadays. It's like this with artists as well.

I guarantee though you in ~10 years it'll be legitimized and hailed as the staple underground genre of the 2010s. Because that's essentially what it is. An Internet subculture doubling as an underground scene.
