Slide your finger up and down in a 12 fret range until you find the note that sounds good over most of the chords, then try a major third and a minor third above that note. If the major third sounds like shit, your song is probably in that note minor. If the minor third sounds like shit, your song is probably in that note major.
>>
>>71225491
And by "that note" I mean, the first note you found by sliding your finger around.

I experience buzz on every guitar I own when pucking an open A string. Something inside guitars is triggered by that frequency that causes resonant vibration. It's not your string or frets fault. It's probably rattling a loose component or maybe the truss rod cover inside your guitar.

>isn't epiphone just gibson for poorfags?
Yeah more or less. You get the same guitar with a pretty good build quality and similar ballpark sound for less than 1/5th the cost of a Gibson just because chinks handle it instead of overpaid yanks. What Gibson don't tell you is that quite a bit of their electronics is chinese too, but of a higher quality than epiphone obviously

I don't think Gibson is worth some of the prices they put on things, especially here in Aus where everything is blown the fuck out of proportion by import taxes, the new import GST tax and our shit dollar value.

>so it's just like a squier fan club
Squier is alright too, but they are dedicated to making cheap Fenders, while Epiphone is a company all of itself that make good models unique to epi and even artists signatures.

Why are you guys pretending that you've heard his material and are judging based on that?

I know for a fact that you have not heard his solos, like the solo from Domination or the solo from A new level.

You are 2 non Pantera listeners, probably even non metal listeners, who saw a post about Dimebag and wanted to comment. You wanted to give an opinion and enjoy the privilege of feeling like an authority on something without actually going to the effort of being an authority.

You wanted to give an opinion without being familiar with his best material, didn't you? Yes you did, you know you did.

You like melodic, slow, chord based, low testosterone, non technical music. I know you both say shit like "it's not about how fast you can play" and you think Kurt Cobain or the guy from radio heard are examples of "good guitar playing" because it's about "expression"

Don't post about shit you don't know, black turtleneck wearing faggots.

These threads are so pathetic. It isn't about guitar, it's about lonely people needing to be liked by showing their gear expertise.

Unless you've been playing for at least five years and are at least good enough to play the solo in Sweet Child O Mine, you are not good enough to have the right to talk about gear.

Stop compensating for only practicing 15 minutes a week by becoming a "gear expert" instead, nobody is falling for it, and skilled guitar players can smell your overcompensating inadequacy and insecurity from a mile away.

You do know that being locking isn't the only difference in better tuning pegs right? They have higher gear ratios, and smoother turning. And the locking on tuners helps when you are setting the intonation on on the floyd and stretching the strings both of which you do before you lock the nut.

Post all day long, judging and such
And don't really practice or play all that much

You don't actually come here expecting to learn guitar lessons from the people on hete do you? I mean, how would a discussion on playing go? Like
> i played some neat riffs i made
> did you solo over them?
> yeah it sounded neat
> how'd you do it?
> i pushed the string down toward the fretboard, on the places they'd make the notes and chords i wanted
> sweet. Did you then strum?

Seriously, Daisy Rock is an underrated guitar. Don't buy the ghey starshaped ones or heart-shaped ones. But the Rock Candy/Rock Candy Special is a really good beginner guitar. Light-wieght, super-narrow neck, shorter scale, thinner neck. Perfect for small hands to learn chords and riffs. I have an 08 RC Special in Purple Velvet, and my 3 year old daughter has already started to learn on it (to the degree a 3 year old can play guitar).

I don't get any sort of "inadequacy feeling" from the gear people. I do agree that discussions in these threads do tend to get too gear-centric for my liking, since no one really posts or talks about their own playing and discussions about theory tend to stay at the most basic level (although I once got to explain to someone the difference between "#5" and "+5" which was a thrill). That being said, it is what it is, and your standard for adequacy is pretty laughable on like, at least three different levels.

Like, I could say "don't even breathe with a /gg/ thread open in your browser unless you can improvise using tritone subs over a multi-tonic system where the chord structure isn't constant throughout each key change" and you'd probably be all like "but... m-muh pentatonic box shapes..." but then I'd be able to smell your inadequacy.

I've been playing for 12 years and I forgot how to play guns and roses 8 years ago like everyone who gets out of the tenth grade does. Most adults grow out of wanting to cover dadrock songs by themselves and actually want to create original music by this age.
>>
>>71232644
>>71232693
Like I said, I like talking about technique, theory, etc. I even like talking about/recommending gear. It's more that, personally, I'm not much of a gear head: I have a small stack with a tube head, a handful of pedals, and a couple guitars and I consider all of them to be absolutely essential to the kind of music I like to play and most other stuff to be kind of frivolous but that's just my own taste and I generally don't try to impress it on others.

The main reason I responded is because the other guy has been posting here for the last couple days and his trolling just reeks of insecurity so I wanted to go for his soul.

But my favorite thing besides playing is teaching so I'm always happy to take theory/technique questions.
>>
>>71232687
Eh, to an extent. Depends on the musicians, really. When I hang out with other bands conversations usually start with gear but generally go more into influences, favorite records, etc. Actually, most of the time we'll start talking about what we like about each other's music and the gear stuff only comes up if one or both of us notices something the other person has that really stands out. At least, that's been my experience. I do make some money from playing music (and I consider myself a pretty [proficient guitarist) but certainly not enough to live off of so maybe your idea of a "professional" musician is a bit more involved than mine.
>>
>>71232808
No U!!!! GTFO 4 chan!!!!

I get it. I come onto these threads and I want to give some help/opinions on gear. I happen to be a gearhead. It's one of the things that makes music fun for me. I want to know "how did they do that" when I hear a song..I get not being a gearhead and wanting to play and write. Not my skillset. I guess what I'm saying is, 4chan isn't the place to find theory geeks. You may, but you probably won't. Least common denominator is the best you can find here. Having written this, I wonder why I'm here...
>>
>>71232598

>>
>>71232919
Yeah by professional I was thinking more big name rock stars.

They all seem absolutely obsessed with all kinds of models, amps and pedals even if they don't use them in their music. Honestly I think that sheer obsession is part of what makes them successful so it's not always just elitist wankery.
>>
>>71233042
>I couldn't even pay half that price for any US made guitar
ftfy
>>
>>71232958
Yeah, I get it. It's not so much that I'm looking for "theory geeks" so much that I like answering questions about certain concepts that musicians might come across and want to apply to their own playing. I remember when theory seemed really inaccessible to me (a lot of it still is but I know enough now to know where to go when I need to fill in the gaps in my knowledge) and wishing I had people to point me in the right direction.

Anyway, that being said, what's your favorite pedal and/or newest gear acquisition? I recently traded in my old Morley Bad Horsie wah for a limited edition Cry Baby. I'm currently running a dying battery simulating pedal into the wah to get that Frank Zappa sound from his solos on the "Chunga's Revenge" album. My fav. piece of gear is definitely my Strat.

It's hard to help the people who want honest answers (even if incorrect, but from an honest point of view) on these boards. The questions do come up, but they're too quickly dismissed. It's a disservice to the music field.

As far as pedals...I run a bunch of them but without a favorite. I think the game-changer combo for me was an MXR compression through an MXR 10 band EQ. For 25 years i never ran a compression or an EQ. I wanted a pure sound. And I was wrong for it. I use a Crybaby 535Q because it's so versitile.

Joes garage, outside now. Guitar effect combo. Name anything close and you're my hero.
>>
>>71233212
#5 literally just means "sharp five", e.g. a chord with a sharp fifth. It's almost never used in chord spellings, though, since most chords derived from the major scale feature the fifth as is or omit it in favor of other extensions. +5 is read as "altered 5" or "alt. 5" and indicates that the fifth of the chord is to be raised or lowered by a half step. This spelling is much more common in melodic minor harmony and frequently used in be bop and fusion. (It does NOT mean "add 5" since it is generally assumed that the fifth will be played anyway as part of the chord given its consonance with the root.)

In a vacuum, yes there's a difference. But you can get 90% of the sound and feel from an Epiphone. No, there's no substitute for the real thing, but a reasonable facsimile can be found. And if you can find it without spending multiple thousands and instead a few hundred, it's a good savings.

I live in NZ, there's really nothing here

I'm just going to pickup an Epiphone Dot from a retailer, I really want one, and I think I'm going to mod the shit out of it as time goes on anyway and turn it into something unique and personalised

Plus most of the sound depends on amp, pedals and audio engineering anyway
>>
>>71233595
Not really, solid guitar. An Epiphone Pro 335 is closer in physical design/feel to a Gibson though and costs only slightly more.

If you're going to mod it, an Epi is a good way to go. New Zealand isn't exactly a first landing point of cutting-edge gear...:). Sound depends on the amp, to a degree. Spend some time researching your amp choice. My opinion is that the amp flavors the guitar more than the guitar flavors the amp..

Ahh...well they outfit the casino with its signature set of Alnico V P-90s so probably not quite what you are wanting. Sorry I didn't read that part.

>Any thoughts on the 339? It's cheaper that the 335
The 339 is smaller than the 335 and gets in the ballpark of that classic LP sound while the 339 is more woody and barky I suppose. 339s are great but if you already own a solid body LP or something that already achieves that sound, then a 339 isn't going to really differentiate itself and showcase exactly what is great about a nice big airy hollowbody.

I see a 339 as a dual cutaway hollowbody LP, whereas a 335 is of it's own. I'd go for the 335 if it's a hollowbody you want, but a 339 may be more versatile. try them for yourself if you can.
>>
>>71233964
Not him but Casinos are more suited for clean blues/jazz or softer rock rhythm guitar due to P90s instead of humbuckers.

Good guitars though, some big name artists even play them.
>>
>>71232576
Did you actually just describe this as "going for my soul" you weak, jazzy faggot?

None of what you said was interesting or daunting, you just made up a needlessly tedious and deliberately complicated challenge that has no bearing on a persons technical ability

I play guitar better than you. If the girl you like watched us both play, her eyes would be on me.

I can change between any mode in any position and can find any chord in any key and know every chord voicing

But most importantly? I just play faster than you. I possess more physical prowess than you do. I'm an objectively superior physical specimen

Yeh I checked out the Casino, I'd really like one, but it's not crucial for my purpose right now

I've read a lot about how the 339 was built for players coming from solid body LP's and needed something smaller, because the 335 was too big

No, but see, I think I actually do get to you, because you're clearly all talk.

Jazzy Faggot would be a great name for a solo project, though. Do you mind if I use that?

As far as your technical abilities go, I'm sure you aren't anything special. Really technical players are a dime a dozen at this point in the game; the guys who can play technically and incorporate a greater depth of theory knowledge into their lines are much more fun and interesting and fuckable.

But keep on with that caveman attitude towards guitar playing, and congrats on making it this far without putting your dick in an input jack (although it could be because you don't see many amps with anything smaller than a 1/4" input and you want something a bit more snug).

Here is my old Epi LP Custom. Was a great guitar, I put a set of burstbuckers in it and it sounded great. I regret selling it sometimes because I had it for so long and learned a lot on it, but the Gibson I replaced it with is a lot better.

Epiphones are great guitars. People who bash them are idiots.

Not guitar, and I posted this in /wsr/, but I thought I might get a better answer from here.

I'd like to learn to play the piano. What kind of keyboard/digital piano should I buy? And anything else that a beginner might need. Any and all resources would be really appreciated. I use to play a little when I was a kid, but I was self taught. I pasted the notes on the piano and everything, but my parents never made me do it so I just stopped.

I have a budget of around 200 - 250 dollars if that helps.

I recently sold my last tube-based amp, so I'm finally free. Don't miss those heavy rascals one bit. They did what they were supposed to do most of the time and I'm not sorry I had any of them, but kinda like old Western Electric rotary dial phones, they're just not useful/practical anymore

hi. I have an acoustic guitar without any strap buttons.
whats the easiest way to put a strap on it?

I saw video on youtube how to put a strap button on the neck heel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oylVn-SgQ88

but is that one strap button enough to put a strap on?
every video on how to attach a strap ALWAYS has a strap button at the bottom of the guitar like in pic related
>>
>>71237025
If you just try screwing into the thin wood on the sides of the body then it will crack under the weight of the guitar. You'll really need to glue a piece of hard wood inside the guitar body and screw into that.

I can only solo well over 12 bar because i have it well internalized, i can do cool chromatic runs and actually solo over the feel of the progression

If i try to solo over something more complex, with more chords with restricts using both minor and major i get fucked up, i cant assimilate the progression well, and can only play the key's scale. Its too much for my brain I cant think along the progression
>>
>>71237237
I do it by thinking around chord shapes up and down the neck. If you know all your chord shapes and what notes you can add into them then it becomes easy to pick out melodies all along the neck like this ...

Looks really nice, but £579 is an insane amount of money for an Epiphone. Don't get me wrong I really like them and have owned 3, but that is utter madness considering a low end Gibson starts at £550 and a good one is about £800. If you are spending that much, you might as well save up a little longer and get the real thing you are so close. And that is not to mention the second hand market.

I will probably buy one when they come down in price or start showing up second hand. Quite fancy a P90 backup guitar to my Gibson.
>>
I have finally decided to buy a Blackstar amp. My only question is, should I get the Ht Club 40, or the Stage 60? I am leaning towards the Stage 60 cuz it seems a bit more versatile, but I don't really need 60 watts cuz I am bedroom hero. What do you think I should buy /gg/ ?

It's definite on my list this year. Real Gibson P-90s and you get a beautiful custom vintage case with it and it's sure to be one of the most absolutely pristine prime examples of the Epiphone Factory and could stand alongside the Casino in terms of quality. I've always been a Custom fan and this is the penultimate beauty. Probably as close as you can get to Gibson quality in the market right now. The Tribute Plus is an absolute gem and might just beat this one out in terms of value, as it's several hundred dollars cheaper, but for sheer beauty, this baby takes the cake in my book.

Les Paul would be proud of that one.

>>71237834
Did you know that Epis are actually angled a few degrees less than a Gibson? I think it's about 3 or 4 degrees less. Meaning that Gibsons are actually more likely to snap since that headstock has more of a chance to hit the floor first and take more of the weight and anything angled away more is slightly weaker than anything more straight. Still I don't think you need anything past 10 degrees and Epis are still prone themselves. I really think PRS really get it right, perfect headstock with only as much angle as needed and no excessive tension on the D and G strings with ridiculous in-line machine head design that caters to aesthetics rather than actual function.

But I dislike the entire PRS company and they will receive no more praise from me.

>>71238057
Will it still sound good at low volumes tho? I agree, it would be a shame to not play that baby outside with that much power.
>>
>>71238027
I had a Stage 60. It is totally unnecessary for bedroom use, even for small clubs it was too powerful to get the poweramp valves singing. Not to mention very heavy and impractical. For bedroom use the master volume will only just be on, totally pointless.

It was a good amp, a bit sterile on the drive channels so make sure you give it a good try before you buy one to make sure it is what you want. The studio 20 is probably better suited to what you are after and will easily handle small gigs. Anything bigger and you would be micing it up anyway.
>>

Agreed, there is better value to be had in the Tribute Plus as I've said, but this is a top shelf Epi and is absolutely gorgeous. I don't think it's meant to be an alternative to lower end Gibson Faded Ts, Tributes or even Studios, I think this is solely for people who want a high-end Custom but can't afford $5000 for a Gibson.

A lower end Gibson and one of these are in the same price range, but they are two different guitars. I wouldn't say either is better, but if you're after a high quality custom on the cheap, this is about as good as you can do considering the current Custom Pro is a Plus Top Pro standard with a new paint job, some real binding and flashy hardware and that's about it for an extra $150-$200.

This thing goes for $1200 here in Aus which is just touching the Gibson Faded SGs and LPs, but I am definitely gonna be shilling out for one myself when they arrive. Beautiful machine.
>>
>>71238110
Well, that's disappointing. However, everything you say make sense, If I am not gonna be gigging, it would be completely pointless to have all that power.I will still give it a try tho, just in case. The only thing stopping me from getting the club 40 , or the studio 20, is the lack of EQ on the clean. channel.
