A lot of people don't, but a lot of people do. And when the underlying themes of the whole genre appeal primarily to men, you end up with fewer women in the metal community. I'm a girl and I listen to metal as well as a bunch of other music- but I'd have to say it really angers me when people assume that I must be at a show as a sidekick to a guy or to show off to guys or whatever. I discovered metal on my own in high school, didn't really have any metal head friends u til after I met some in college.
