I say this a lot of the time simply because it's easier than naming a bunch of bands they almost definitely haven't heard of.

I know that sounds a bit hipster-y, obviously depends on who is asking though.

If it's someone I know is interested in music more than most people then I'll name some bands. If it's a random normie I can't be bothered for them to say "I haven't heard of them" 5 times in a row.

I don't know what basis you have for comparatively judging albums (unless you think everything in art is somehow incommensurable, in which case I don't know what the hell you're doing on /mu/ or any board that has opinions on things), let alone anything that can be compared if individual songs are somehow off the table. You're demarcating them with absolutely no basis whatsoever. You judge the quality of individual songs the same way you compare the quality of anything with anything. By comparing the attributes, merits, and flaws of each and making an educated judgment.

I swear, go back to some board like /r9k/ or /v/ with your dumb unprovoked spergouts

This. It's especially bullshit when people pull out the "muh record labels" excuse when they try to justify pirating King Crimson albums, since DGM (King Crimson's record label) is extremely ethical (owned by Fripp, independent, mission statement is literally to be a model of ethical business in a corrupt as fuck industry).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discipline_Global_Mobile

I show them my music player and then they can browse the artists and bands (I don't like dropping genres because people who aren't too much into music tend to have a very unclear idea about even common genres: case in point, a guy asked me once what's 'metal')
Then they see the ones they already know and we talk about those, it works like a charm. If they are interested I show them similar things that aren't as obvious, because everybody always knows the same bands (U2, Metallica, The Cure, etc.)

I don't listen to every piece of music, but I don't have bias against any genres and enjoy stuff from everything. You don't have to always be a smartass, obviously no one who says that means literally everything
>>
>>71190124

It's true that it does wipe out a lot, but it's the band's own fault for having such a shit taste and actually, un-ironically going for that vocal style.

There's tons of bands where you can actually understand the vocals.
>>
>>71190175

The point is when people say it you can usually name a genre immediately that they don't listen to, and as a statement it also tells you nothing about their preferences which makes it an unhelpful answer.

It just seems pointless. Most of the time the lyrics aren't english anyway. Also don't pretend that your clean vocal metal bands don't have shitty edgy lyrics too, come on.
>>
>>71190238

the vocals being illegible isn't even necessarily about lyric appreciation, it just sounds fucking stupid.

Provided that the lyrics aren't too stupid or over the top then being able to understand them is definitely better than not being able to.
>>
>>71190000
I made a genre, it's called Assholefart-core. It seems that you listen to that too?
>>
>>71190137
>splerging about a colloquialism

Just because you do it doesn't make you any less fucking stupid.
>>
>>71190238

Vocals don't have to be clean sung to be legible.

>everything should be free for me, how dare artists want compensation for their work instead of pouring hours of their blood, sweat, and tears into a project for zero gain >:(
Newsflash, we live in a capitalist society. Until a revolution comes and does away with the concept of money, people work for a living.

Being open minded and knowledgeable about music should lead into realizing "I listen to everything" is such a useless and uninteresting thing to say. If you actually are interested in hearing new sounds, give an actual answer, not a vague and false answer.

A conversation from yesterday:
> Well, what kind of music do you like?
> Uh, well, some rock, some pop, some jazz, this and that, electronic music...
> Oh, so you like electronic music? I love it!
> Yeah, I like it
> Like Avicci?
> Not really, I don't like him
> But that's electronic music
> Yeah, but I don't like all electronic music
> Oh, so what artists of electronic music do you like?
> Well, Vangelis, The Prodigy, Jon Hopkins, Kraftwerk, Portishead...
> Must be really obscure, never listened to them before.
> [>Obscure, this guy is an idiot] Really? Do you wanna listen to some?

All 3 are a way to feed their superiority complex to rap fans and "black culture" without explicitly saying it. They all act as a sort of affirmative action for those who still want to be superior to "black culture" instead of trying to co-opt it or virtue signal their open-minded poptimism like nu-males. This particular breed of white person, the fedora-tipping, positivist, /r/atheism user whose world view, in the subject's attempt to be "euphoric," ends up completely lacking in any kind of nuance goes whatsoever. In his hubris to be "above the masses," he immediately runs to the easiest and least challenging way to do so, that is, a complete tunnel vision into one particular aspect of music while completely ignoring how the holistic product coalesces. For Eminem and Hopsin, this is the lyrics. For TechN9ne, this is his technicality and speed. All have obvious flaws, such as the myriad of hackneyed cliches and lackluster instrumentation. But regardless, this particular white person does not care. He wants to be intelligent. He wants to be deep. He wants to project his superiority anyway he can. If only someone could tell him how typical he's becoming in the process.

I would agree with the superiority complex route because it has crossed my mind plenty of times but not so much the racial superiority idea. Though I will say that I feel that when it comes to Hopsin, Eminem, and Tech9 they do borrow from "white culture" for a lack of better wording, just small things like unnecessary horror elements, physical gimmicks like costumes, and themes that don't usually roll with traditional rap.

People who recite the opening of Beethoven's 5th, not knowing that in even the first movement the climax is much better than the opening, and the 4th movement may just outright be better.

Because 90% of people who say it thinks that they actually listens to everything since they never explored anything outside the mainstream...

70's rock, power metal, classical, 90's rap, psychedelic rock, heavy metal. Maybe more.

Thanksfully, music is not a common conversational topic in my social circles anymore. It's all kids and work now. And everybody listens to classical anyways.

Having two kids myself, it's often reassuring to hear that other kids are just as annoying as yours and you didn't just fuck them up at an earlier stage.

/ck/ is generally willing to sample anything, but it's not as if they eat any food any time.

There are English breakfast aficionados, other will have a slice of toast, or a croissant and a cafe au lait, then there are the guys eating miso soup with seaweed and a pat of steamed rice, etc. I use breakfast as an example because people rarely mix things up so early in the morning. People have staples in food and in music.
>>
>>71191703
that's a pretentious thing to be bothered by.

>you must not listen to them because you don't know their real name
>>
>>71195495
Absolutely! I remember an interview with Genesis where they said that they were bothered by people saying that their music was made for taking drugs to, because it was so technical that they HAD to be sober to pull it off.
>>

>people who still cringe at the old stuff they listen to
>because they equate it to how cringy they were

I still listen to Korn and I was never an edgy faggot.

This.
I presented I Talk to the Wind to some normies, they actually enjoyed it. They even said it was "like the Beatles."
If I put on I Talk to the Wind to some /mu/tant autist, they'd spend an hour dissecting it.

No, Zappa actually believed the stupid shit he said. "Just a joke" doesn't apply to him.
He was also a politically-illiterate retard.

>Her: "Oh, it was nice, but the music was weird..."
>Me: "How so?"
>Her: "Well, I've never heard music like that before. They don't play it on the radio."
>Me: "Uh, yeah... I guess not..."
>Her, in utter dumbfoundedness: "Yeah, so, how did the professor find out about it???"

Except ad hominem attacks, what else do you got? He fought against the PMRC and censorship:
https://youtu.be/VTdTvK_d9lQ
Should he have just played glam metal like any normal person would instead of fighting censorship? Wouldn't you say that's a good cause? And what about his instrumental music? Was it all a joke too? I guess Pierre Boulez must have missed it.

It's not "off-topic ad hominem" when he puts his political shit at the forefront of his music. It's hard to separate the artist from the art when the artist makes the two inseparable.
Sure, I appreciate that he fought censorship and all, but nearly everything else about him is rather reprehensible.
