I'm setting up my very first stereo system with Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers and an Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver. Are these good for a beginner budget setup?
Eventually I'd like to incorporate a turntable into this setup once I get some more money together.
You did the right thing with that TX8020, that shit is good.
However I'm not so sure about the miccas, they tend to be shitty. I don't know about the exact model you're using, but I've had miccas in the past and I wasn't satisfied to say the least.
Get yourself some used vintage boxes on the low before you get that turntable. You gonna be glad you did.

I have plenty of goodwills and thrift stores in my area. Is there a way to differentiate good vintage speakers from garbage? Do I just buy them and hope for the best since they're used?

Well if you have an option to test them at the store, definitely do so.
You can't go wrong most of the time if they aren't visibly busted. Also if you have some basic soldering skills 90% of the problems can be fixed in a heartbeat.
Tons of brands are fine like dynaco, infinity, ems etc. just avoid mcintosh like the plague and you'll be fine.

>infinity
I have a pair of Infinity Reference Series that I bought new a long time ago, they are still better than 90% of the garbage out there. Worth saving money for if you can wait.

Awesome, thanks for the advice.

I have a pair of Q5s and I love them. They are some next level shit and that aged, tobacco smelling woodgrain cover is just adorable.

You're welcome, anon.
Also nice dubs.
