>>
>>71103593
Memes aside, what makes it so great?
To me it seems like a bulky, heavy thing with outdated tech and headstocks that notoriously break and strings that bind in their terribly designed nut because of the break angle and don't stay in tune.
Why is it so popular besides the name on the headstock, which hasn't been known for quality in years.

GUITAR legend Marty Friedman has achieved so much since first picking up the instrument after seeing Kiss at the age of 14.

He sold 10 million albums with thrash metal group Megadeth, has a hugely successful solo career and is an acclaimed television presenter in his adopted home of Japan.

Yet, there is one incident in his career that sends shivers down his spine - performing the Hatikva in Israel.

Marty played the Israeli national anthem during a show at the Theatre Club, Tel Aviv in April 2007.

"Talk about getting the chills," Marty said about the impromptu performance. "I wish my grandparents were there to see it because they were so Orthodox that they didn't care about anything other than Jewish stuff.

"They were super super Jewish. Maybe they saw it in some weird strange way."

Marty, who played in Israel once with Megadeth and once with his solo band, told me that performing in the Jewish state was "the coolest thing ever".

"It was like playing anywhere else," he said. "You could be playing in Puerto Rico. You see a bunch of long-haired metal fans. But their names are like Sidney Goldstein.

"It totally freaked me out that everybody in the whole building was Jewish. Growing up being the only Jew in class for my entire childhood . . . and then there, everyone were crazy rock maniacs. Nobody looks Jewish."

"Last year in China, I played the Chinese opera Butterfly Lovers and you see everyone's face light up because they don't expect you to do that. And in Israel, obviously being Jewish, it takes on an even more special feel."

His grandparents arrived in America from Russia and Austria, while his American-born father worked in government and his mother is a writer.

Marty's Jewish education lasted until his barmitzvah. He says Laurel had enough of a Jewish population to fill the one shul in town.
>>
>>71103786
They're almost all imitations, with no sense of originality.
As much as I don't like PRS for being a Jew about guitar, his singlecut shape is the best thing to happen to that kind of guitar shape since the original Les Paul.

Chris is interesting because he has all the technique and ability in the entire world, he can literally, LITERALLY, play it all.
The thing is, he's just not interesting. His solos aren't good, he's just robotic and fast and lacks any sort of feel or life.
Compare him to Marty, who has an instantly recognizable sound. You hear Marty bend a note and you know it's him. When he guest stars on a song, you know when it's him playing and not the other guy.
Chris is just there, he plays solos fast and with perfect technique and that's it. Then you forget about him.

Yeah i got the "rust in peace" anniversary vid. He literally plays exactly like Marty did. Said it was hard to learn how to "not only play it, but play it like he did". So it makes sense with your robot comparison. He had to learn to play with the emotion Marty conveys, which is outside of the box

>when I played guitar, I figured it out right away and I was like, wow, this is way easier than playing sports. And I probably won’t get my ass kicked by doing this. And it’s a funny thing, I was kind of a small, skinny kind of gawky kid and once I started playing guitar all these big jock types were always like protecting me and stuff. Before I started playing guitar, and I never really got picked on or anything but I certainly didn’t have big football player friends at all until I’d gotten my first band. Then all of a sudden, they treat me like a king or something. That appealed to me right away

I've always wondered what Metallica would have sounded like if Mustaine had been retained. Probably a lot less stuff like Creeping Death and Master of Puppets and more Ride the Lightning and Battery type tunes. I know people love Mustaine's leads in Megadeth (myself included) but he sounded like shit in those demos and live shows from that time. He was way better served doing his own thing and not having to be the lead guitar player than staying.

Megadeth and Dave Mustaine expert here.
Megadeth became so successful because Mustaine literally didn't give a fuck. At some points he didn't even care about his own life and wanted to die. Dave just played what he wanted, the way he wanted and didn't care. If you weren't part of that sound he looked for, you got kicked out. If you didn't mesh, you were gone. That's why they've had so many members come and go.
It's Dave's band, his songs and that's it.
Metallica could never work have worked with him because it's not his. It was James' and Lars' band.
People call Dave a dick and an asshole but it worked, he's been wildly successful and to be honest, he's really a very good person actually. He's a family man, been married to the same woman and has kids with her.

There is literally nothing wrong with Dave Mustaine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Mustaine either. Other than Jimmy Page he was one of the reasons I picked up a guitar. I've just always found the story of how he got kicked out of Metallica interesting to say the least, and his obsession with them despite his own success is really interesting. He's probably my favorite guitar player ever, I've just always wondered what Metallica would have been like with Mustaine in the band the whole time.

>>71103675
>>71104394
Guitar weight is a preference thing. I like my guitars to be heavy. As for the headstock, amusingly they put volutes on them in the late 70s to address the issue and there was a lot of backlash from the community. Realistically it's just a matter of not bashing the guitar into things.

The quality control thing is pretty stale now too. There was a specification flop in 2015 but Gibson's quality control has been improving again for quite awhile now. 2016 models were very consistent.

I do have a bit of an issue with the PCB electrics (which aren't on customs thankfully) and they are definitely charging for the name, but the quality is fine now for the most part.

>>71104649

Carvin makes custom order guitars, and since most of the world has fucking awful taste in anything, they make disgusting meme guitars.

I'm trying to decide what amp to get and if Fender is going to either abandon this software or release a new version and not update old ones i'll be kind of pissed.

ESP Eclipse STD I right? They're brilliant guitars. What pickups have you got in that?

It might be worth having a peak inside of it. Some of them shipped with 300k pots, you can get a bit more top end and open the sound up a bit if you swap to 500k. A friend of mine has a custom shop ESP Eclipse I. It's an absolutely fantastic guitar.

I have a Gibson myself and parted ways with my ESPs awhile ago now. ESP really do make great guitars though.

Also if you don't mind my asking, which country are you in?

there's plenty of them, they just dont stick or are exhorbitantly expensive

Toone guitars, Auerswald, etc for the stupid expensive

EGC and Moses Graphite use alternative materials if you're into that

Got it in Europe, is an Eclipse I CTM. While I could pay for a Custom one, that would be blues lawyer territory to pay for one being a hobbyist. Also, the only dealer in the country would overprice it like fuck.

it came with duncans, so I think it is Jazz/JB. I really dislike how trebly the JB gets sometimes. I've been thinking of changing them, but can decide what to put there.
The Eddy also came with duncans, 59/JB, put black winters in it. It turned out better than expected.

Keep your eyes open for small run semi-custom runs. ESP does them from time to time. My friend got his ESP Eclipse I Custom for a touch under $3000 AUD.

>it came with duncans, so I think it is Jazz/JB. I really dislike how trebly the JB gets sometimes.
I really like that combination but JBs definitely aren't for everyone. If you like the general feel of the JB but want something a bit better try a BKP Holy Diver. Although I imagine the pricing is insane in Mexico...

Dude, I can buy a mid-range guitar with that money.

It is funny about the JB. It sounded alright in the Edwards. In my old Epi, sounds so-so, way better than whatever shit it had. And sounds so-so in the Eclipse. I think it feels more loose and trebly than I'd like

Perhaps it's just psychological, and expected a more aggressive/tight sound in the ESP, and the Eddy, being a copy and more classic, sounded 'alright'.

Fucking speaker companies, why don't they make low sensitivity ones, for bedroom playing.

Hah, yeah I'm not even slightly surprised unfortunately.

>I think it feels more loose and trebly than I'd like
Have you tried boosting it? I always run JB and Holy Divers with a TS-9 in front of my amp. ALWAYS.

You need a pretty tight setup to pull off JBs in a heavier setting. I get away with it because I'm usually using that AxeFX or particularly dry amps like my DSL.

If I'm playing metal through something like a 5150 I'm more inclined to use a BKP Painkiller. They're quite similar to a Lundgren M7 or Duncan Distortion. My ears tell me Black Winters are just a Duncan Distortion with more top end, so you might be better off with a Distortion unless you're tuning particularly low.

Distortions are cheaper than Black Winters here which is an added bonus to that approach, but I have no idea on pricing in Mexico sorry.

>>71107692
You can get around it somewhat by boosting your amplifier. It's not the same as cranking it but it does help a bit.

Always have a tube screamer if I want to play metal. Still have this Orange. It is still spongy with a fizzy and fuzzy sound on its own, so the TS and an EQ in the loop are always there
Low and mid-low in the JB sounds good, but the treble is almost ice picky. I can seem to find a sweet spot in the tone knob so it doesn't affect the bass to much.
I end up looking like Santana, can't stop fiddling with the knobs.

And yes, distortions are cheaper in Mexico than Black winters and the newer pickups from SD.
I actually wanted to put a Custom or Custom 8/Alternative 8, but haven't decided.

I tend to go tone 10, level 10, and drive between 0-3. A little more extreme than most people recommend. You're on the right track though for sure. I've never been huge on Orange outside of OR120 so I can't offer a ton of advice on that front. I've always found them a bit fizzy so you're probably starting with an uphill battle.

>Low and mid-low in the JB sounds good, but the treble is almost ice picky.
Strange. I don't think I've ever heard of JBs being described as ice picky. You'd probably find something like a Duncan Distortion unbearable in that case.

What EQ are you running in the loop at the moment? Even something as cheap as a GE-7 is fine if you're cutting frequencies, they only get noises if you start boosting. Relaxing the shape knob a bit on your Orange should reduce the bite a little too.

Have you tried the same guitar through something darker like an old two channel Mesa Dual Rectifier? It might be worth ruling out the Orange as the cause as well, you never know really.

>I actually wanted to put a Custom or Custom 8/Alternative 8, but haven't decided.
Try them first. Alnico 8 pickups tend to be a love hate thing. I know a couple guys who love the sound, I prefer Alnico 5 myself. Based on what you've said about the JB, providing it's not the Orange adding the high end in you'd probably be best avoiding a ceramic pickup like a Distortion.

I quite like the Pegasus myself, although I'd never buy one over a Holy Diver personally it might be worth trying one out due to BKP pricing where you are.

Apologies for the wall of text. My brain is still a bit scrambled these days.

I got that orange because it was really cheap. In fact, considering the current exchange rate, I got both head + PPC212 for like 3/4 the price of the head only.
It is not too orangy though. It is quite disliked in the orange forum, except the clean channel being good.

>EQ
Is a MXR 10 band one. I don't use the settings in that picture, as those are for the Eddy with black winters, and it was like 10 pm.
With the EQ, I also end up cutting, with just a very subtle boost in the mids (can't remember the freqs, I'm in a hotel room finishing details for a presentation of my wageslave job).
Might check later again. Might be something as stupid as pole pieces height.

>trying a Mesa
I get that the Orange might not be ideal, but the only guy I know of that has a Mesa, is an insufferable prick. Also lives in another city.
I actually want to change the amp, but I can justify doing so, same as not justifying the custom esp, or another guitar even.

The scene where I live is filled with horrible practice amps, some Marshalls Valvestates, and a couple of Yamahas THRs that plug directly. There is a guy that rents backline amps and I remember a JCM 900 there, but I'm not that 'in' in the scene. I'm a 'straight edge faggot' because I didn't want to get wasted three nights in a row with my last bandmates. And all bands here are like that. Even when in the last 3 years, there have been 2 guys dying for alcohol poisoning in the bars they used to play, one dead in the hospital after a fight went wrong, and another arguably dead because he couldn't pay for the weed his dealer gave him.
Then again, I live in a PoS city, and not even Mexico City

Can't argue with that haha. I almost bought a PPC212 maybe six or seven years ago (I forget) because one popped up for half what they usually go for. I ended up sticking with Marshall 1960AVs though. I don't remember what the TH30 sounds like specifically, been awhile since I've played an Orange.

>is a MXR 10 band one
Oh heaps better than a GE-7. Yeah just fiddle around with everything, you've definitely got enough kit to dial the sound out if you're patient enough.

>I get that the Orange might not be ideal, but the only guy I know of that has a Mesa, is an insufferable prick.
Hah, this reminds me of someone I know. I mainly said a two channel recto because they're notoriously dark, anything dark would work though. You'd be way more familiar with the voicing of your amp than I would though.

>Marshalls Valvestates
I've actually got an old 8100 here, I love its sound. Most of the Valvestates were trash though and even my 8100 is built like shit compared to my DSL50.

>There is a guy that rents backline amps and I remember a JCM 900 there, but I'm not that 'in' in the scene.
For what it's worth most of the JCM900s are kind of lack luster. The SL-X is amazing, but that's about it. Most people tend to have Twin Reverbs which are eh.

That's nuts. I don't usually drink at all on tour and it's never bothered anyone. Seems like a pretty petty thing to hate someone over, but I'm not really surprised. Sigh.

If I'm not using the EQ, I think the best word would be 'thin'.
The shape knob gets old really fast, as it only creates either V or A curves, but not controlling the mids, but the bass and treble as it is a dual gang pot inside. So mids are kept relatively constant. That's why I tend to boost mids a little with the EQ.

>broke his legs and beat his mate into a coma.
Here, both would have been killed in a gruesome manner.

The scene here is either relatively "underground" which is just a bunch of young people that are pretty much punks and end up in situations like what I mentioned, OR the more 'sane' part... which is a bunch of the same guys after they made friends with a certain committee that leeches off gov funds.
The government has some social programs that benefit small artists, etc.
So, the commitee is a bunch of people from the musicians' union that have politician friends, and they get to decide the venues and all that. Also, they siphon the money from some of the federal level programs. One of the recipients is the niece of a big guy in the union.
The guy is good, a bit "neoclassical harmonic minor' generic, but better guitarist than me.
Anyway, his band disintegrated, leaving him as a solo act. The rumor is that they couldn't decide how to split the gov money. They don't say that though.
There are other musical acts, but I have no idea how other genres fare here.

So for rock and metal, either in adapted poor people that are angry at everything, or gov shills and asslickers.

Blog post over, yeah, I might exchange the pickups to see how it goes.

>>71108816
That's insane. Sounds like some pretty full on corruption.

There's nothing like that over here, it's a much more typical type of deal. The punk and crust punk scenes have been hijacked by SJWs, and the metal scene is split into two individual groups.

The first group is all your genericore type music who are convinced metal is dying and they're the last bastion. It's the kind of scene that beats their chests a lot and runs their own "record labels" to "sign" their friends bands. Mates seeing mates bands kind of stuff.

Then there's an actual underground scene which is all the death, doom, and black metal. It's actually a great scene but one promoter more or less controls the entire thing. Thankfully the guy really does do it for the right reasons and he's very good at what he does. Things only go wrong when someone else tries to organise an event without him being involved.

>Blog post over, yeah, I might exchange the pickups to see how it goes.

>>
>>71108916
>corruption
Dude, it is Mexico, it is a given.

Also, this is a small city. In Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, or something bigger than this shit place, the scenes are mostly as you say. Yes, also with their fair share of SJWs.

I think, only the oldest rock and blues bands here are not involved in any of that shit, mainly because they are old and have their own following built over the years.

Also, the social programs are for young people, so they don't do drugs and instead are either creative (full range of arts; music, dance, theater, even "film making". I laugh at the bullshit they presented in 2015) or active (sports). They still like to get wasted and drugged.

Another anecdote. last one I promise.
In an open mic, a relatively new band was about to play. Covers of course. The bassist was nowhere to be seen, so the bassist from one of the oldest rock band stepped in.
Turns out, the fucking vocalist/guitar was high as fuck. After the first song, the bassist doubled as vocalist.
The old band was there because they along with other three bands and some guy who I know nothing organize the open mics in that neighborhood.

Other genres might not have that shit. But other genres are Pop and 'regional' stuff, like, shit, better not say it, lest you get an aneurysm. Popular latin music is horrible.

I suppose that due to rock and metal being too niche here, they can get away with more bullshit.

Direct to board using a good IR in stereo. Second signal to a poweramp and cabinet for stage sound.

If you can only use one, use the latter, mic the can and approach it exactly how you would any other amplifier.

Matrix GT800FX and GT1000FX are the go-to MOSFET units, for tube a popular approach is a VHT 2/50/2, 2/90/2, or Mesa 2:90/2:100.

Honestly just keep playing and when you think you want something, spot it out and save up for it, it will mean more when you finally pick it up and can play what you wanted to play on it.
>>
I am physically incapable of playing a bass line and melody line separately. My thumb gets messed up and plays with my other fingers. Is there a good way of practicing finger independence?
>>
>>71118976
don't try to play the whole bass melody, play the notes you can and stick to the notes that will pop, like every other or every third or something, try swinging up to hit the bass when it's appropriate maybe
>>
>>71119226
I mostly play blues in an open tuning, so it's just an alternation between the first and third string with my thumb. I can physically play it if I practice lining the bassline up with the melody, it's a very easy line I just can't keep my thumb independent from the rest of my picking. I have the same issue with the piano.

Regular practice is the most important thing. Thumb independence is a skill that takes time and eventually just becomes muscle memory.

As for specific exercises, use basic rhythms (half notes, quarter notes, eighths, etc.) to play with your other fingers while your thumb is doing the bass part. Playing scales or simple melodies on the high strings is another good thing to throw in, since it takes your focus away from your thumb, but that might not be comfortable until later.

How likely is it that sub $300 guitars will be completely unusable from the factory nowadays? I want to buy a guitar just to see if I like the specs on it or not and I can set up most things on my own aside from things like refretting and electronics, but if I'm going to learn that then I might as well learn on a cheap guitar.
