How do I get into Yo La Tengo? I tried listening to this album a few times but always find myself losing focus and diverting my attention to something else. I like the opening and closing track, though.

Yo La Tengo is a pretty subdued band because, you know, dream pop. Try I Am Not Afraid of You..., it's probably Yo La Tengo's most interesting album.

I like it as background music for other stuff mostly.
Good background music can be pretty rare

This. Also:
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
Summer Sun (crazy underrated)
Electr-o-Pura
Upside-Down
Yo La Tengo doesn't have a magnum opus, obvious intro album--they really just have a career's worth of great but not amazing albums. You can't really go wrong with them.

That's how I feel about this album too. I Can Hear the Heart and And Then Nothing Turned Itself are both much better, try those.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I'll do some listening today and see if anything catches my interest. Worst case scenario I found a new band for my study sessions.

Summer Sun is a great album. It's not an album for most people but that's okay.
Today is the Day is amazing, that's true. They've done the louder/softer gimmick for a few of their singles to varying degrees of success, but on that one it really works just as good both ways
