why didn't other "big" prog bands even try to stay relevant after the 70s?
Yes and Pink Floyd did but for all the wrong reasons

Can anyone tell me what the THRAK cover actually depicts? Is it a twisted sheet of metal? This has been bugging me for years now.

I think it's a piece of tin.

Genesis also. ELP tried, and failed. Camel is the only band that still made highly instrumental prog rock into the late 70s. Keeping in mind that most prog bands peak was in 70-72 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLncD0ta2jQ
The dearth of quality 80s synthesisers didn't help, desu. The oil crisis of '73 also made lots of labels really keen to get rid of their prog acts, due to how expensive they were to record and cut the vinyls, as well as print the lush gatefolds. Something like the Sex Pistols is much more quick and dirty (and cheap), so we got a PR campaign about how punk "had to happen".
