I don't get Arcade Fire.
Can someone explain the appeal to me? is it the fact that every song sounds grandoise and has fancy string arrangements?
>fancy string arrangements
What the fuck are you even talking about OP.
Also why do you want to "get" a band you're clearly not liking?

I'm just trying to understand why people like it, since all I get is an even split of people saying they're the best band ever and people saying it's shit, which doesn't help me get an understanding at all

I like it because it's lighthearted alternative rock that has lyrical themes which relate to me personally as well as being catchy enough without turning into radio schlock.
Their albums often have a concept around them and while there are definitely some really weak songs most are just well produced, executed and fun to listen to.
I can see how someone who's not into all of that would dislike it.
I don't get why a lot of people like a lot of other bands, but I just assume it's not my kind of thing and carry on with my life.

i really love funeral, and especially the suburbs. didn't like neon bible much.
for me, its pretty similar to what the other anon said. it's not challenging music, it's accessible and catchy, and the lyrics and sound cooperate really well to express vibes and feelings (pretty much just of growing up in suburbia) better than just about any other band out there. I don't actually think like "wake up" is the greatest song ever written, but lines like "we remember bedroom, and our parents bedrooms, and the bedrooms of our friends" just get me, especially when combined with the rest of the music
