Is there a reason why so much modern music isn't mastered well? I'm not an audiophile so I don't care as much but I'm curious.
why bother

Yeah but why do producers do that?

This. The loudness war is as bad as everyone says it is. But that's the only way to make it on the radio. This'll make me sound like a pleb, but I don't care I really liked the new Walk the Moon album. But I wish it wasn't as squished cause it hurts most tracks. But if it wasn't as loud and squished shut up and dance wouldn't have been a top 5 hit.

Most music has never been mastered well. Sure, 90% of modern mastering is crap, but remember Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap.

Sturgeon's "law" is is a fucking dumb baseless statement that pretentious avant-teens cling to because they think any form of cynicism automatically makes them look intelligent and sophisticated. If you're honestly the kind of person to namedrop this sort of shit your opinion isn't woth the insignificant amount of bandwidth it took to express it.

Slamming to the limiter works really well for some stuff though (noise and /bleep/). But yes, if you want any semblance of dynamics, it's kind of a sad affair.
There are plenty of good modern albums that slam it tastefully, IE during climactic moments and such and yet keep the softer parts soft.

yes, but it makes hair trigger incompetents angry

this
because most people now listen to music on shitty headphones and their laptop speakers
