Charts: The "I didn't discover my taste through /mu/" edition.

I know there's already a chart thread, but this one is specific. Only post itt if you were a dedicated, passionate music fan BEFORE you started browsing /mu/. By all means, your charts can have /mu/core, but I'm interested to see how one's chart might look if it wasn't JUST /mu/core. I'm a little bored of the average chart thread, and top 100's that are almost literally interchangeable.

For fun, post
>Age
>How long you've been listening to music
>Who Inspired your taste the most

Ignore the inevitable bait in a desperate attempt to keep the thread productive

>22
>Since I can remember
>My dad was really passionate about music. A lot of my favorites are because of him, and they were favorites from a young age. Portishead, NIN, Nirvana, Tom Waits, Refused, The Doors, etc. He was kind of a dadrock snob, but he'd surprise you with some crazy shit every now and then. He and I aren't on good terms these days, but every time I get into some new music, I wonder what he'd feel about it.

dunno. my mum and dad are both into cool stuff respectively but i don't really listen to much that they listen to nowadays, and even then it's for nostalgic reasons. my mum was into mbv, yeah yeah yeahs, and sonic youth and loads of 90's shit, remember she used to love hole. my dad was a raver in the 90's, so i listened to acid house and shit like new order which i don't really like anymore. i think they sowed their seeds with stuff like that but i was more interested in seeing what else there was whilst my mum was happy playing the same 6 CD's over and over again and my dad was too #twatted to care

OP here. It might come off like a high horse, but I promise it's not. Also I don't actually have that much /mu/core on my list. I've enjoyed a lot of albums considered /mu/core and rym core for a long chunk of time before I even discovered 4chan as an underage b&. Nick Drake is the only artist on my list I actually discovered through /mu//

>mfw I came to /mu/ to get into a bigger variety of music, and the music everyone's masturbating about in 2017 is what I was blasting in my bedroom on CD'S when I was 12

Fuck it, I'll just listen to k-pop like all the other anons who gave up hope

Since you like Gorillaz and MF Doom, I would recommend digging into some of the collaborator's discogs more. Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Dangermouse, Kid Koala, Dan the Automator, etc. Deltron 3030 is an astounding project.

Always been into it more than the average, going back to being like 7-9 I used to spend my evenings listening to punk compilations and shit, got into weird autistic dark cabaret shit at the age of like 13-14 as well as always being into a few records I still like (Dummy, few Smiths/Cure records, Astral Weeks), into IDM/ambient at like 15 and reached /mu/ at 16 and started going hard on the /mu/core shit, kinda coasted and listened to a lot of psych music for years and starting to explore a bit more the last year.

>>71027741
There are elements of green leafiness in your taste that I appreciate

>>71027693
a tad too dark for me these days but I appreciate a lot of these records

>>71027659
I sense that you were a sad /mu/ boy for years and are flourishing to become something greater

I've got one mate who I've pretty much explored music together with, we used to smoke a lot a few years ago and don't so much anymore but both of us recommend five or six records a week to one another and when we're in the same city we'll be listening to records and eating curry regularly so we've shaped one another's tastes the most.

>>71027845
nothing too abnormal

>>71027896
never seen that hrsta record here before, overall I like it though again too dark for me nowadays

>>71027908
You have a far more extensive jazz knowledge than me but I like what I recognise.

>>71027287

>>
>>71027992
Don't know watcha want m8. I didn't post b8, m8. I don't listen to music to posture or fit in with the cool kids. I just actively search for things that I like and go from there. I assumed that's how everyone else appreciated music, anyways.

>You have a far more extensive jazz knowledge than me but I like what I recognise.

that;s actually /mu/'s input. i wouldn't have got into jazz if it wasn't through jazzthreadguy's and cosmic louis' sharethreads. i've actually discovered a lot of my favourite albums through sharethreads so i owe a lot to here really. you have good taste too, i've never seen anyone else on here with keith hudson on their chart, or any dub album for that matter except maybe lee perry or something

It's okay to get into shit later than most. I'm glad you discovered it at all. Your average adult isn't into anything more than the one genre they grew up with that they've arbitrarily decided is THA BEST MOOSIC EVAR. Kudos for wanting to broaden your horizons.

>>71028025
Good choices, even the /mu/core stuff. I would have included Can's stuff and What's Going On on my chart if I had some more room. You might like
Gastr Del Sol - Camoufleur

>>71027908
Not much that I recognise on yours, I've been meaning to get into Kraftwerk though; Good Faust, Bowie and Eno picks

>>71027896
>mass of the fermenting dregs

>daikanjo, heaven beach, ksiezyc, koibito he and pacific

>>71027741
Some things on here like The Fall and Rundgren that I'm interested in, unfortunately I don't have anything to rec

>>71027659
Unfortunately the only stuff I recognise from yours is the more /mu/core type stuff but great picks nevertheless

Bowie's Low (and the other Low) seem to be popular picks.

>>71028107

>>71028238
I'll download that Gastr Del Sol, I've never seen any 1991 on any charts before, I'll check out a few of the records on here cause a lot of it looks interesting.

>>71028106
I've only really began to get into jazz in earnest recently other than a few records, I need to dip into more sharethreads, five years or so ago I got most of my music from them but have been pretty much away from /mu/ for quite a while. And yeah, Keith Hudson's one of my best discoveries of the last year, found him about six months ago and he's already into my top 20 on last.fm.

My pre-/mu/ taste consisted mostly of metal, punk, hip hop, and some industrial/electronic stuff. Once I got here, it was mostly /mu/core and /rym/core, but now I am kinda back to my pre-mu taste but with more folk, classical and jazz stuff making my daily listens (that aren't on this chart.)

Much love to the guys who recced me Gangxta Nix, Mars Attacks, and Dynospectrum last time.

>Just turned 24 today
>15 I think was when I actively got into listening to music? It was when I first picked up a guitar
>Not a particular person, but it was picking up a guitar after guiltily enjoying my friend's copies of Guitar Hero 2 and Rock Band. I was born in India though I am a citizen here in the US now, so I didn't have the kind of exposure to the "classics" that most others had.

>>71028096
>>71028107
The idea of getting into stuff at the right time is kinda absurd. I think how much a person gets out of the music they listen to is far more important.

Menace Ruine - Cult Of Ruins

>>71028238
A lot of cool things, though a lot of /rym/core type stuff as well. Cool that you're branching further into Graham and Lescalleet than most do though.

Henry Threadgill - In For A Penny, In For A Pound

>>71028025
Is the exploration of the hip hop genre more recent for you, then considering you didn't really mention it?

Goodie Mob - Soul Food
The Doppelgangaz - Lone Sharks

>>71027908
Damn, that's pretty cool to have parents like that. Closest thing I have is my paternal grandfather who was into Indian folk stuff/used to perform some of that stuff as well.

Anthony Davis - Variations In Dream Time

>>71027896

Good stuff. I personally dig Common Era from them. Check that out as well if you haven't.

Merchandise - Children of Desire
Dan Deacon - Bromst

>>71028364
If you want to give some freak folk a try, if you haven't already, check out the stuff by kazuki tomokawa, especially his album nikusei

and here's a list you might like (not sure): https://rateyourmusic.com/list/aoa/japanese_eccentric_folk/

I think I'll have to listen to some more of the stuff on your chart before I say much more, because my mind is drawing blanks, though judging by what I know a lot of your stuff looks great

Walking With a Killer / Dirty Hessians by Kim Deal is a good single, and I don't know if you've already heard or if you'll hate Title TK by The Breeders

If you haven't heard much of Momus (or only the first album like most people have) you may want to check out his most recent two albums (Glyptotheck and Scobberlotchers); though Momus is usually a "love him or hate him" guy. He's my favourite artist of almost all time personally.

If you're in the mood for something ambient, this is nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9fQGPS5sjc

sorry i'm not of much more help

>>71028501

>>71028540
>A lot of cool things, though a lot of /rym/core type stuff as well
I used to pick up stuff from chart threads a couple years ago, and then went to finding stuff in rym user-made lists, so that's probably why
though if it's rymcore, I can't speak badly of it.. that's pretty much my taste in a nutshell

>Henry Threadgill - In For A Penny, In For A Pound
Funnily enough I had Too Much Sugar for a Dime on there before I replaced it with something, but that's the only I'd heard.. I'll check your rec out too

I'm 5'8 172lbs 21 years old/F/Cali and I've been listening to music for like a decade-ish. I never had a huge interest in music as a kid but I was really autistic and had you know those like electronic toys that made sound and I would put them super close to my ear and listen to the sound all distorted n shit. I didn't really get interested in music until I saw the fucking Bionicle commercials that had music in em when I was like 9 or 10 and that was around when I developed anxiety issues and started playing with other kids less and less and never going out and my brother would be torrenting on our dial up and browsing 4chinz and I'd be like yo hook me up and he gave me a folder with Mp3 (that I still have) filled with music from anime AMV's and I got into Breaking Benjamin and the Pillows n shit and then I just autistically listened to only that for like a year and then my dad got me this offbrand Mp3 player that came with a bunch of Polyvinyl records stuff on it and it had of Montreal and Mates of State on it and I started to get into indie pop once I moved where I lived here and had good internet and I made a Pandora and found more shit and then I was 13 or 12 and made a last.fm and got into BoC and BSMR and weirdrr goofier bands like that and I was in a gaming clan then (youngest member!) and I met my best friend who a year or two later found out I browsed 4chin and we started sharing music and he introduced me to FlyLo and etc. There was also a dude in my bio class in highschool who turned me on to a bunch of electro stuff amd I vomit. I started going on /mu/ then and started getting really into shoegaze and then the next year I started talking to some girl in my class who tripped here and I got into too pure stuff from her and then the avant horizon quickly approached and I got into some other shit and then i got really really depressed and now I'm here then I learned music theory dtopped liking experimental music and now I just listened to pop music

Thanks for the rec! Much appreciated.

>idk if anyone really inspired my own taste
RYM? The "I listen to noisy music, experimental music, post-punk inspired stuff, and some sorta weird folk music" is a combo way too common among the userbase there. Also popular on /daily/ as well to an extent.

Keiji Haino & Sitaar Tah - Animamima

>>71033122
Of course one would think that you're making up being 18. But then, you also just started talking about smoking cigs like you're a sheltered kid who just turned 18...commendable 4chan shitposting or legit the immaturity of being young?

>alalll thiat meme rap.... :(
>not infusing the memes into your chart
Gotta show, not tell, m'boy. Something you seem to not have realized yet with those responses ;^)

Ground Zero - 革命京劇

>>71033850
