What is y'all's actual musical heritage? The shit you identify with the most and that reminds you of your home and your past?

For me it's blues and funk since I'm from New Orleans and I heard Dr. John and the Meters weekly as long as I can remember, but I won't pretend that I didn't also listen to dadrock when I was a young white youth
>>
I'm from Texas, so probably the old-style Western Swing and traditional country music that I grew up listening to. Hearing norteno also makes me nostalgic, since where I grew up it's all over the radio, even if I don't care for the music itself

Do you feel like Detroit has lost most of its good music? The only artist I can think of from this decade is Danny Brown
>>
My dad always listened to pop country when I was a kid so that's kind of nostalgic even though I don't really like any of it.
>>
>>70957752
I do. There's a really good metal/grind scene in the city right now. But I doubt any of those bands will make a big impact outside of Detroit.

Sucks

My mom was really into Funk and Soul, but her cousin was and is still into that back to your roots african stuff and exposed be to Fela Kuti and Olatunji and stuff, so it's that stuff for me

Dr. John is great btw

There's sort of a similar sad feeling in New Orleans because we had a massive influence on American music from traditional jazz all the way to Southern hip hop but Katrina seriously fucked up the music scene and only a few nola musicians have blown up since 2005

At least we have tourism though, there's probably not much Detroit tourism...

Bach. My mum used to play the cello suites on cello when we were kids

Sacred vocal music for me seems to be what I identify with the most. renaissance music for a capella choir hits hard
>>
>grew up in new york city
>moved to oregon mid childhood
>mom's family is french canadian
>dad's is irish
>they don't talk about their culture at all
none that i identify with

Bands that speak to me:
>Zappa
>Melvins
>Stereolab
>Aphex Twin
>Swans

As a teenager, I liked what you might call techstep drum and bass.

I used to like metal, and I continue to like choice bands, but it's un-relatable.

>there's probably not much Detroit tourism
There is. Unfortunately it's mostly trust fund hipsters trying to turn it into another Portland/Williamsburg. Or people coming to take pictures of the "ruin porn".

I don't think you guys will ever understand the amount of feels I get from listening to classic mandopop shit like this. Like, just the amount of crazy nostalgia for a time and place that's now infinitely far away. Times which were so bitter, and so sweet. Fuck I need a drink.
>>
>>70957877
There are also a lot of hipsters here but they at least attempt to cherish or co-adopt the culture. It's still sort of weird

>>70957844
You can identify with the hipsters that are trying to sodomize Detroit and New Orleans kek

From Britain?

>>70957953
Did you grow up in China or just your parents?
>>
>>70958050
Yeah, I grew up in China, left with my parents as a teenager. That whole period was pretty rough for my family, so many ups and downs. The music I remember was mostly karaoke shit like that.
>>
>>70958077
Crazy, for me Katrina was traumatic but besides that I had a stable/normal childhood

Is there a good music scene in China that just isn't accessible to Americans, because from America it seems like there's next to no artistic music from China
>>
>>70958113
If there is I wouldn't know. I made a pretty clean break, don't know anything that goes on there anymore. There probably isn't much, honestly I just don't think China's into music like that. We like Kenny G a lot over there. That should tell you all you need to know.
